Now that I've finally wallowed out of my busy fall semester, I'm starting to think about making garb again.  I'm pretty new to sewing (my sole completed garb project is a tunic for Hasan, which came out okay), so I'd like to come to a meeting or two and hope for some kind of sewing skill osmosis.  I'm available after the 13th--coming to a meeting might give me the kick I need to start on gambesons.

I think the consensus was that we should do one in the Unity area this
time. Ysabiau, are you still willing to host? I am willing, but I know
it is a hike for people to come to Fairfield.

Yes, I would be quite happy to host a meeting. What day/time would work
best for everyone? I have one sewing machine, an iron/ironing board, and
floor space to lay projects out.

Like Kim's place, this is a kid-friendly (Maddie) and cat-friendly (two)
house. We are right in the middle of Unity, near the flashing light.
People just need to let me know what direction they'll be coming from, and
I'll give accurate directions on how to get here.

Thanks for waking me up! Birka is coming up later this month, and I'd like
to finish up something new to wear for it.

I'd like to see if I can make the meeting also. I haven't settled into
an evening January schedule (yet). Go ahead and plan a time most
convenient for everyone else - I'll either be able to make it or not
depending on how late in January the meetng happens.

Of those, Wednesday is best for me, or the last Thursday of the month if we wait that long.  My evening schedule is a bit up in the air until the semester starts, but Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays are likely to be open for at least the first few weeks.

Hi all,
I finally bit the bullet and attempted, after months of
procrastination, making a Mongolian del for one of my sons. So please
tell me if it looks at all acceptable. I got very frustrated but I've
posted a photo of what it looks like so far. It's not finished yet,

So what do you think?

the following Wednesday, the 18th? Will either of those dates work?

It looks good to me, but I'm no Mongolian expert.  I'll be seeing James this evening and I'll show him the picture.  Bring the del along with you to youth fighter practice, that way James and I will be able to see it first hand.

You might want to suggest to your Mongolian that it is fierce resolve, not fear, that the Mongols were known for.  ;-)

What? You don't think he looks like he has "fierce resolve?" <grin>

Thanks for asking James for me. I'll try to remember to bring it on
Sunday, but like I said, it's not done. Not hemmed, and it really
is just basted together, though I may actually sew it by then.
Since it seems like it looks okay.

Half masks are the ones usually worn.  Do a web search for Mardi Gras mask and you will find the style.  Mardi Gras masks tend to be purple/green/gold, but for the ball go with whatever colors you want.  Mardi Gras ones also tend to be a bit more ribbon-y.  You will want something that will look like it will hold up for a while.  A feather sticking two feet up from the mask will not last while dancing.

If you are really interested in medieval masks, look up information about commedia del arte.  That was a theater style started in the fifteenth century.  Several of the stock characters wore stylized leather masks.

An opinion about knuckle length -- consider that some delicacies
were eaten as finger food - for example, a knife (usually) or a fork
(later period) could be used to spear the food item and then have it
plucked off with the fingers before transferring it to the mouth.

I'd consider how much fabric I'd want dragging across the plate
(which was often shared with a dinner companion). Thus I'd use the
knuckle closest to the wrist instead of closest to fingertips as my
personal guide. Or you can fake it and go for somewhere in between
the two knuckles - it's only about an inch difference.

My two pence worth,

Shall we call it 4 PM?  That way, we'll have a chance to get a little work done before dinner time...and there's a REALLY good pizza shop less than a block away!

Does anyone need directions to Unity?  Or just on finding my house?  I live on Main Street, (also known as Routes 9/202) right near the flashing light in the middle of town.  We are right across the street from the New Horizons health care building.  Just let me know which direction you'll be coming from, and I'll post directions for you.

Kim, when you get into Unity and turn right to head to the College, we are the 4th house down on the left - a huge, yellow Victorian looking place with two front doors.  We are the left front door (the one with the porch).

Sorry for the delay--I just got back in town yesterday.  The 18th works for me, I think (that's the first week of classes, so there may be something I'm forgetting in the chaos).  Afternoon is best for me, but morning also works.

4pm on Wed sounds good. I will try to be there on time, but may be
a bit late. I have a portable machine that I will bring with me. I
hope someone can help me with fitting - I'm trying to put together
some sort of kirtle pattern.

Big yellow house - easy to find!
Thanks for hosting!

Sounds like I will miss meeting you yet again. I will be in the
middle of Anglo-Saxon History during this week's tailor's meeting
but, in regard to your kirtle comment, I did want to mention that I
have this book called the Medieval Tailor's Assistant that I have
found very helpful.

Howdy.

Well, tomorrow's weather looks nasty, with ice in the morning and rain in the afternoon.  If people would like to reschedule, I will understand...it won't take much of a change for that afternoon rain to be more ice.

What do y'all think?  If you want to wait and see what happens in the afternoon, that's fine.  If you want to come over anyway, that's even better!

Good morning,

If you haven't seen a weather forecast yet, this afternoon looks...well, nasty.  Heavy rain, cold temps, and gale force (almost hurricane force) winds.  This is more than enough to bring down tree branches and create power outages.

I vote we postpone the meeting - maybe we can get together tomorrow evening, or we can try again next Wednesday.  Getting together to sew isn't worth an accident...not to mention that I don't have your phone numbers, so I couldn't call any of you if we lose power here.

Thoughts?
