Hi all ,

volunteers for Tonkin Snub-nosed Monkey  ( cho dự án ngắm Khỉ )

volunteers for Tam Dao National Park ( cho dự án tại Tam Đảo )

Good luck to all

Dear all,
Some time ago, I was searching for volunteers (see last mail above). Thanks a lot for your mails and your suggestions where and how to find volunteers.
Unfortunately, we could not find enough volunteers and are now running out of time: the rainy season starts in Tuyen Quang Province.

During this time it is difficult to survey and the chances to see the monkeys are also very low.The nature reserve Na Hang suggested to do survey between
October 2005 and March 2006.If you are interested, I would add your name to a list, and inform you about details in Augst.
Area: Na Hang Reserve and perhaps Cham Chu Watershed protection area.
Duration: 16 days in one area
Travelling mode: probably by public bus from Hanoi to Na Hang (around 7 hours
travelling)
Finances: the project provides bus ticket from Hanoi to Na Hang and around 100,000 VND/day.
Who can take part: Vietnamese. (foreigners only if we are able to arrange working visa and permits
which is a bit difficult.)
Activity:
sitting at an observation spot, and writing down any monkey sightings, we mainly need counts,
behavioural information could be collected but not needed (the chance to actually see a monkey is not too
high either, which means, you would be lucky to see a snub-nosed monkey once in two weeks)
I understand, that students mainly have time during summer vacations, and I am sorry, that we can't do
survey during this time.
I can only offer an alternative for protecting animals at Tam Dao: you could take part at an activity at
Tam Dao National Park (2 hours driving from Hanoi), helping to raise awareness for protecting wildlife and
not eating wildlife at restaurants.
Anyone interested please send an email to me: snubnose@...
and as subject line either:
"volunteers for Tonkin Snub-nosed Monkey!" or
 "volunteers for Tam Dao Nationalpark!"
Regards and thanks again for your interest,
Bettina

Dear all,

Yesterday was the 1st meeting of VANY (Vietnam Action Network for
Youth) and we decided to address next June 05 as the launch for
collaboration between VANY individuals and groups. There would be
a " street demonstration" of youth in at least 3 cities: Ha Noi, Da
Nang and Ho Chi Minh city. In Ha Noi, I suggested the Sword Lake
(heart of the city, where Clean New Year's Eve took place few
months ago) and other guys agreed all.

Then I'm sending this mail to E&M, especially to Mark and Nguyen cuz
I'd like your comments. The activity would be very close to what we
discussed 2 weeks ago.

Ah 1 more thing, Suf2015 (Speak up for 2015) and YVC (Youth
Volunteer Club) are planning a Youth Camp in Ha Noi in August for
volunteers from Indochina and Thailand. I know Mark and Nguyen have
a wide acquaintance with volunteer groups/clubs/orgs. How about
others?

I'm wondering what would be done to celebrate next June 05 in other
places? How about England/UK?

Cheers,
Pinkie

Greetings to Everyone! How are you?

Thanks for the message. I am curious to know the detailed plan of activities to be done in the day. Hope all the best.

Just would like to briefly share that the ANU is planting a garden at the back of the Research School of Biological Science for the event. This involves a fair amount of undergrads.

Warmest of wishes to all!

De doc duoc email tieng Viet: Ban can dat format email cua minh la "rich text format" (chu khong phai "plain text"). Neu mo thu ma khong doc duoc, ban hay vao menu View, chon Encoding, chon Unicode (UTF-8).

Subject: [EandM] A thought struck me

Hi all,

Lupo

English Version

I ve received an email from Mark and a thought suddenly crosses through my mind - As we re using English as an official language for this discussion group, would it set us apart from other Vietnamese people whose English is not as good as us ?

I ve suggested that as u post a message in English, u might consider to add a short summary version in Vietnamese at the end , so it might help us the widen the range of audience and participants ( It will take a little bit of time but a lot more ppl will benefit )

Thank you for your attention and pls feel free to comment on this topic.

Green Living: On Campus (be continued)

Recycling on campus

There are paper recycling bins and re-use boxes in most computer labs. The Environment Collective has initiated an informal paper re-use system in the computer labs; one-sided paper collected from them will be collected and made into lecture pads, available through the Collective. If youre looking for recycled paper, the ACT Greens sells it.

If youre looking for somewhere to recycle plastic, cans, or bottles, there arent many ways to do it on campus at the moment! 2000 should see campus-wide recycling bins introduced, but, until they are, the easiest way to recycle is to take recyclables home. The food outlets in the ANU Union building do recycle some things "behind the scenes", and in 1999 became one step closer to being green when they started using crockery instead of disposable plates. The only known recycling spot as of this writing is near the dirty dishes trolley in the Asian Bistro. Sometimes there are buckets of plastic bottles here that the extremely dedicated recycler can search out and contribute to.

Other groups on campus

As well as the Environment Collective, the Sullivans Creek Catchment Group also operates on campus, monitoring the water quality of the creek that flows through the middle of the ANU.

The Resource & Environmental Science (RES) Society is an interdisciplinary society run by students to provide the ANU student body with a forum to share environmental knowledge and ideas, and to host events which provide access to all spectrums of the field of resource and environmental science. For example at Professionals' Nights students can obtain a personal insight into the many careers in environmental science by listening to a wide range of environmental science professionals. In the past these speakers have included forestors, members of non-government environment organisations, environmental policy planners and rangers, just to name a few. Any student of the ANU is welcome to join the society. RESS contacts are Kumalie Elford email s3159845@... or ph 6259 6509 and Matthew Walker email s3177971@...

The ANU Earth Charter Group aims to raise awareness of, and encourage participation in the development of, the new Earth Charter document. This document is being developed to reflect principles of environmental justice, and is hoped to act as a guide to the actions of governments and organisations the world over that wish to be environmentally responsible. See the ANU Earth Charter web site (http://eca.anu.edu.au/ecasp) or email ec_anu@... for information on whats going on at the ANU.

If youre interested in the broader issues of human rights, social justice, or animal rights, other groups on campus such as Community Aid Abroad, Amnesty International, Red Cross, and Animal Liberation could be for you. To find up-to-date contact details, check out their web pages at http://student.anu.edu.au/Clubs or ask the administrator in the Students Association office.

ANUs Community Neighbours - The ROCKS

Down in one corner of ANU campus is a collection of funky organisations, the Residents of Childers and Kingsley Streets (ROCKS). Some have a particular environmental focus, such as the ANU Food Co-op, the Conservation Council, the Environment Centre Library & Shop, Permaculture ACT, and LETS (Local /// what does E stand for?/// Area Trading System). There are also Photo Access, a cooperative photo studio; and the Canberra Dance Theatre. People at the Environment Centre can point you to lots of other groups operating in the Canberra region, and theyre well worth checking out.

ANU Food Co-op on Kingsley St has bulk food, organic vegies, chocolate, spices, and other bits and pieces. Open 10am3:45pm, TuesFri; 10am3pm, Sat; phone 6257 1186.

Bogong Environment Shop has books, clothes, posters, bulk detergents, and random other stuff. Unfortunately itll be closed for refurbishment in the first part of 2000; otherwise its open 9am5pm, MonFri; 10am1pm Sat; phone 6247 3064.

If youre researching environmental issues, the Environment Centre Library has info on all sorts of issues as well as how-to books. Its in the same building as the Bogong Environment shop, and is also being refurbished in early 2000.

QBC LETS (QueanbeyanCanberra Local Energy Trading System) is a goods- and services- exchange system complementary to the formal economy but hoping to avoid its greed and scarcity through using QBs instead of dollars. Good for people on low incomes with some time. Phone 6247 2882; open 11am1pm, Tues, Thurs and Sat.

Permaculture ACT (PACT) is a group of people interested in and practising permaculture. People work on gardens individually or together in suburbs and regional areas, at Quamby and at the ROCKS area, according to the ethics of care for the earth, care for people, and cycling of surpluses. Meet 1st Tues/month 7:30pm at the PACT office in the ROCKS area. Contact Rosemary at home on 6247 3612.

Warm Greetings to Everyone!

How are you?

Please see below the first part of the Green Guide from the Australian National University. For the moment, I would very much like to share the first two parts (1) short introduction to ANU Environmental Collective and (2) another brief intro to ANU Environmental Management Plan.

This is an example of Green Living: On Campus from the ANU Environmental Collective. I would hope that the information could be somehow useful. It is very likely that the Vietnamese environmental collective could be similarly formulated and learn from ANU.

Green Living: On Campus

Environment Collective

2000 is the year for the Environment at ANU. Its time to get involved, and the best way is through the ANUSA Environment Collective. A dynamic and fluid organisation, it welcomes and is dependent upon student participation at all levels, from casual contact to highly committed activism.

In this day and age, there is an increasing need to be aware of and act sensibly within our world. If you think being concerned about where you live is up to the government, the farmers and lentil eating ferals, its time to change your perspective. There are many simple things you can do, from recycling your waste to not buying from irresponsible companies. A great first step as a student is through involvement in the ANUSA Environment Collective.

The Enviro Collective is a way for all of us to get together and decide how we want to make our contribution to a more sustainable society. It is made up of all the students who want to be involved. The Collective is open, inclusive, and friendly. It works on consensus, which means decisions are made as a group and everyones opinion counts in final decisions. As a student, you already belong to the Students Association Environment Department, so you have access to all the office, money and other resources for environmental action.

What the Enviro Collective does each year is determined by who is in it and what they/we want to do. You dont need any prior knowledge or experience to take part. Once you talk to someone you will soon be up to date. Last years Collective ran campaigns on anti-nuclear issues, worked on making ANU more sustainable and helped many other campaigns. They built up a good network with other ANU groups, other campuses, and green community groups. Many of these people will still be around and are there to share their knowledge.

This year, there are many possible things the Collective could do. We can continue to improve the ANU through input into the ANU Environmental Management Plan Committee and by tackling consumption and waste systems. We could get into Waterwatch, Landcare and Total Catchment Management. There are huge national and international networks working on issues like forests, global warming, sustainable agriculture, living cities, multinationals like McDonalds, and heaps of things - all you have to do is tap into them. Action can include holding stalls, organising and attending protests, tree planting, printing t-shirts, writing articles, talking about things, and having BBQs. There will be the annual Students & Sustainability conference, to be held in the semester break in Queensland this is a fab event, a must for all. There is also the chance in second semester to organise wonderful events for Bushweek, which is a bit like O-Week.

To get involved in the Environment Collective, come along to one of the meetings or, if you cant make it, contact the Environment Office to find out what is happening. Email enviro.collective@..., phone 6279 9869 or come into the office in the Students Association building. Walk in through the doors and take a right, it is in between the Womens Office and the Queer Office. Check it out this is your space and your resource. The first meeting of 2000 is on the Wednesday of Week 2 at 5pm on the grassy area by Sullies Creek (opposite the Uni Bar), where future meeting times will be decided.

Thanks to all the people who have helped with the ANU Environment Collective.

ANUs Environmental Management Plan

In early 1999 the Vice-Chancellor released the ANUs Environmental Management Policy. This policy committed the university to a variety of principles ranging from promoting environmental awareness and responsibility on campus to identifying and monitoring the universitys community, legal, and ethical environmental obligations. An Environmental Management Plan (EMP) was developed to provide a strategic framework through which to pursue these goals. The current EMP details strategies for improving environmental performance in the following areas:

  • Energy Management;
  • Waste Management;
  • Water Management;
  • Air Quality Management;
  • Biodiversity Management.

The 19992001 period will be an active, exciting period for environmental management on campus. Current initiatives arising from the EMP include:

ANU Green

ANU Green is the user-friendly term for the Universitys EMP. This program will be formally launched early in 2000. A web site has been established that provides all the information you need to know about environmental management on campus; the URL is http://www.anu.edu.au/facilities/anugreen.

Greenhouse Challenge

The university has joined the Commonwealth Governments Greenhouse Challenge program. This program is designed to encourage corporations to reduce their greenhouse-gas emissions. The university has completed an in-depth inventory of all its greenhouse gas emissions and has implemented a variety of strategies in an attempt to reduce them. We have begun purchasing green energy from ACTEW, and we hope to increase our percentage of green energy over time. We have also joined the Greenfleet program through which we hope to reduce emissions from our car fleet and to establish CO2 sinks in the ACT region.

ANU Environment Award

The University has established an ANU Environment Award, which will be given annually to individuals or groups who make a significant contribution to the universitys environmental performance. Nominations close on 30/6/2000, so if you know of any individual or group who you think is worthy, give them a surprise. See the ANU Green web site for nomination forms and judging criteria.

Organic-matter recycling trial

In early 2000, the university will establish a six-month organic-matter recycling trial. The aim is to compost a large percentage of our gardening waste and kitchen scraps and to reuse the compost on campus. If the trial is successful then we will move to a full-scale operation. So if you see an organic recycling bin, please put your leftovers in it, and help contribute to the success of the trial.

Recycling

The year 2000 will also see the introduction of a corporate recycling program. We hope to have standardised recycling bins across campus. So please do your bit and put your recyclables in the right bin.

Green Office campaign

The year 2000 will also see the introduction of a Green Office Campaign. Through this campaign we hope to raise awareness about how students and staff can become better environmental managers within the office environment. A variety of pamphlets and posters will be made available that outline what you can do. See the ANU GREEN website for further information.

The year 2000 is an important year for environmental management on campus, a great many things are happening and the involvement of staff and students will be a prerequisite for success, so please get involved where you can.

Wishing you all with warmest of wishes and take care!

Hi all,

I ve received an email from Mark and a thought suddenly crosses through my mind - As we re using English as an official language for this discussion group, would it set us apart from other Vietnamese people whose English is not as good as us ?

I ve suggested that as u post a message in English, u might consider to add a short summary version in Vietnamese at the end , so it might help us the widen the range of audience and participants ( It will take a little bit of time but a lot more ppl will benefit )

Thank you for your attention and pls feel free to comment on this topic.

Welcome 3 guys from England (Sazib, Brad and Mark) to join us as the first step to make this e-group international. Hope the foreign wind will bring us more perspective and in return, we'll show the world why Vietnam is a good destination for working, volunteering, ...etc

Symposium: 'Future Materials for Life Sciences'

The ongoing revolution in biotechnology entails the creation of new
materials that will help prolong and improve the quality of life. Such an
invention might be a new ceramic cement for bone repair, or a polymer
scaffolding for cell growth and tissue engineering to create replacement
organs.

We are on the threshold of an even larger revolution in which
nanotechnology will be applied across many disciplines. The ability to
design synthetic materials on the nanoscale toward the molecular
architecture of biologically relevant molecules will ultimately lead to
the integration of artificial and biological matter - a concept of
enormous technological potential with possible applications in such areas
as biomedical sensors and artificial tissues.

Future Materials for Life Sciences on April 28 in Melbourne will explore
the past, present and future of materials employed in this
multi-disciplinary field, with materials - biological interfaces employed
in medical devices being the focus of the Melbourne gathering.

A excellent cast of speakers include:
Professor Gayle Woloschak, The Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern
University, USA
Dr Keith McLean, CSIRO Molecular Science
Professor Hans Griesser, IWRI
Dr Laura Poole-Warren, University of NSW
Mr Ian Brown, COO Cygenics
Professor Arthur Brandwood, Brandwood Biomed
Mr Greg Brown, Impedimed Pty Ltd
Dr Peter Binks, Nanotechnology Victoria
Dr Peter Goss, Bio21
Dr Karlis Gross, Monash University
Professor Andrew Holmes, University of Melbourne.

Dear Pinkie,
that's very bad news. In July and August it is raining a lot and survey is
almost impossible. Best would have been March, but I couldn't find students
yet.
We should start at least end of April, beginning of May.
