Welcome, this is an experiement on some levels and hopefully a great tool for
people who are interested in blacksmithing. The first little while will have a
few bumps as I learn the ropes so please be kind.

Remember this is a private group and Rule #1 is that I am the admin/group owner
and I have the last say. Which does not mean that yours is wrong but I'd like
to keep the off topic chatting to a minimum. Please DO NOT spam this group with
the latest internet hustle, virus alert, or political statement. If a discussion
of politics or whatever grows out of a thread on smithing, fine- if it gets
obnoxious, I'll warn you to stop. If you don't, see Rule #1.

We're here to teach and learn. Metalsmiths of all skill levels and interests
are welcome here. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A STUPID QUESTION, relating to
smithing.

Henrietta had ran this concept past me a week ago. My comment at the time was
that many working blacksmiths are extreme technophobes. The two sides of this
(computers and forges) are rarely seen on the same coin. I guess we shall see.

Although rarely seen around the SCA these days, I guess I do count as a
heavyweight here (at least in terms of smithing experience!)

iron smelting
Viking Age
pattern welding

Hello all,

I call myself smith, though I recognize that I am still very much an amateur.
Hopefully this does not offend those of you who really are smiths.

I very much enjoy working with metal (amongst other materials) and look forward
to learning more.

Does anyone know of good instructions for building a propane forge?  Coal is a bit too messy for my neighbors, here in the midst of suburbia, and I assume charcoal of the sort one would need is probably a little scarce these days.

I am not a smith.

I (and my son) are interested, but haven't the foggiest idea what to do, where
to start, or even what to ask.

I shall be as a sponge. ;)

are you looking to build from scratch? or have a 50/50 mix done?
is there a specific size you are wanting?

Ok
I shall begin the fun by saying learning is sixty percent reading and forty
hands on, or at least it is for me.

One that I truly still use to this day and have had since my college days
learning smithing is "The New Edge of the Anvil."

I totally recommend this one for anyone who is new to the trade, its a great
base book with many great references.

What books have you found that you find interesting? Are they still in print?

side note: this is a great way of finding out whats books I need to add to my
Xmas list this year too (grin)

Hwaet!

I'm Sciath, residing in Rising Waters, and although I do not have any area to
have my own forge :-( That being said, I spent my entire Pensic in blacksmith
class, and hanging out at a merchant forge (finagling as much time on the forge
as possible). I even picked up some tools, in preparation for the future time
when we have a house that has an appropriate place for a forge.

And, to think, it all started at a forge party in An Tir, with the sound of the
hammer calling me (and my penny whistle). I played with the forge until the sun
came up (well, played my whistle to the hammer's beat). And, promptly slept
through the battle the next day...

YIS,
Sciath ingen Chaennaig

Because I can see this coming, I have uploaded a PDF version of the handout I
give my students for my own 'Introduction to Blacksmithing' course. (Normally
you have to take the program to get this.)
Please keep this document 'in house' - do not distribute the link to the whole
world, it is a copyrighted document.
At some point I will comment on available smithing training in Ontario.

I should give some introduction as many of the new members will not know me.
In the SCA I am Breneth although I have not been active for a number of years.
Life and full time smithing has gotten in the way of weekend events.

I apprenticed with Sylard it seems a 100 years ago ( a goodly number of years any ways).
I am happy to help beginning smiths with their learning.

The vast majority of the information that you need to know about me can be found on
My website www.artistblacksmith.com  General stuff like opened business in 1987 etc.

I am looking forward to seeing the spark catch here and who knows perhaps Sylard and
I might show up at an event together and you could pick our brains.

Be Well

Greetings all,

I couldn't help but chuckle at Darrell's earlier comment about forges and
computers rarely being seen on the same coin.

Computers have been a major part of my life, starting way back on the old Apple
IIE systems in my public school days. I've a background covering assembling
computer systems in the retail field, to application programming and development
in the GoC, to management of federal web sites which spans 20+ years.

During the last handful of years, my interest in computers began waning. So
about four years ago, I came across the blacksmith's art which 'fired' up a new
interest and I've been hooked ever since. Now I admit I am not a full-time
smith... in fact, it's still a hobby for me. But it's one that stems from my
heritage (plus it's a great way to vent frustrations from working on computers
all week).

Having said all that, I guess I could be considered one of those unique
individuals with some weird, juxtaposing interests. But then again, that's what
makes me, me.

I look forward to seeing what new and interesting conversations, links and ideas
present themselves in this group.

In this group (the SCA in general) juxtaposing interestes and beleifs make you normal, not weird. I have met some awome fighters who polically were pacifists. They loved the martial arts side, but truely beleived that fighting was no way to settle any distpute. In the SCA. the only dispute that gets solved by AC is who gets to be King next, otherwise it is pritty much bragging rights.
We have huge numbers of Computer geeks, technical nerds and others for whom this is thier greatest social contact. this is all good, it would not be the SCA we know otherwise.
