This year, for our anniversary, my lovely wife gave me two books by Jose Antonio Ares; “Blacksmithing: Hot Techniques & Striking Projects” and “Metal: Forming, Forging, and Soldering Techniques”. These are general works with an overview of multiple metalworking techniques in addition to blacksmithing. They contain projects that are suitable to the beginner which can be done entirely on the forge but the author uses a variety of techniques. They also have some of the clearest colour photographs I’ve ever seen in a blacksmithing book outlining all the steps in the projects. They cover a lot of techniques in general detail (you won’t learn arc welding in two pages.) but they give a good base for blacksmithing and a good overview of other methods that you may want to learn later.
Both together sell for $38 (amazon.ca) but I’m asking $30.
“but Glenn”< you ask. “Why would you sell your anniversary present?!”
Well these are very good books which is why my wife gave them to me.
Twice.
Yes, she forgot that she gave them to me before. I blame Amazons’ robo-Emails which suggest books with similar topics to ones you’ve looked at on their site. I’m printing off a copy of my artisanideas.com wish-list for her in future.
I’m going to ask one thing from you all. PLEASE DON’T TELL KJARVALA SHE GAVE ME BOOKS I ALREADY HAD! We had a wonderful anniversary and I don’t want to spoil it.
If you’re interested in the books, please Email me at gmrmt@....
HI everyone
Just wanting to touch base and see how my fellow smiths are doing? The snow is
still holding on out here in Avacal and I am ready to start making random coal
fires to melt it.... I have only been able to get out to one blacksmithing
meeting in Edmonton this winter. Every other time winter has bested me on the
hwy and sent me crawling home in defeat. I have found at least two museums with
a forge in them, so we shall see what comes from that.I'll keep you updated. I
have also started a blacksmithing bug out here with the local SCA groups and
will attempt to stoke the fires of new smiths as the season continues.
I have found several "ex pats" as they call themselves, those who once called
Ealdormere home here in Avacal and also have found many kind and fun new people
to play with too. Like Maunus said when I first moved out here,"you always have
family in the SCA no matter were you go" and that is so true.
I would love to hear what everyone is up to and what cool things you shall be
doing in your local area. I am hoping to have at least one demo by the end of
summer for the local group and maybe start a local guild out here too. Passing
on the knowledge of smithing is very important to me. I never want to see this
wonderful trade disappear from the known world, it would be such a horrible loss
for the human race. Have fun smithing everyone and talk to you soon.

Nice to hear from you again Thora. Our forge has been very quiet this
winter but with luck that is almost over. I did make it down to one of
Northern Outposts Forge nights which was cool. With any luck I am going
to start reproducing some of the tools found in the Mastamyr chest. This
project is intended to get my basic skills in blacksmithing up to speed
and get me ready to start doing my woodworking again this spring.

Have a small amount of hammers, swages, fullers axe heads for sale next Saturday May 18, plus some drinking horns. Have move and need to get rid of surpluses.
I have a 145 lb Buckmen's anvil for sale in fair forging condition.
As well I have some hammers and a 3/4" propane burner brand new for building a small gas forge.
Helmut's Forge is having a yard sale to celebrate our new home and to clear out some extra stuff, like drinking horns, jewellry , atthames old tools etc.
I wish I lived close enough to get there. I could use another anvil and
tools.

Hi Thora!
Glad to hear things are picking up for you out that-a-way, and that you're
building up a blacksmith group out there!
My forge has been quite quiet as of late, but with museum season open out here
I'm hoping to get out to CHVM a few times this year. The only project I have
lined up is to make period chain used to hang cookpots over campfires.
I plan to forge weld the links closed, but am wondering if I should rivet
them... some research should answer that question.
Talk to you later and take care.
