Subject: [SCA-Ramshaven] Demo this Saturday and Sunday - Kidspark

The Canton of Bryniau Tywynnog has a demo this Saturday and Sunday, as
part of the Kidspark Festival
http://www.kidspark.ca/

Dates: Saturday August 18th and Sunday August 19th
Times: 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM both days, set up at 10:30 sharp
Cost: Free
Refreshments provided, BYO lunch

Activites:
Fighting
Fencing
Kids Costume try-on and photo opportunity
Medieval Games
Arts and Sciences Display and demonstrations
( Or any other activities you might like to organize )

The demo is being held in Victoria park, at the end of Water Street, at
Courtland
Here's a map:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=129+Water+St+S,+Kitchener,+ON,+\
Canada&sll=43.447817,-80.496118&sspn=0.00532,0.009913&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=16&iwloc=add\
r&om=1
If you take Water Street until it branches at the bottom, take the Left
barnch, and then turn immediately Left into the small utility building
parking lot, we can unload there, and will be in the field just to the
south, beside the large flower garden. This is a great location with
lots of flat grassy space, many large trees and good visibility.
Bathrooms are just across the road, and we will have a small tent for
changeroom space.

The city has offered to supply us with tables and chairs if we would
like - so please let me know if you need some.
If people can bring simple costumes that are easy for kids to try on,
and get their pictures taken, please let us know.

Please reply to this message if you are interested in coming out so we
can get an idea on numbers.

In service,
-Edward the Red

Hey Archibald, it's Chris. Are you planning to attand
the Sept. 15th event in Sarnia? I hope so. I would
like to do some cut and thrust monkey love with you.
It would be great to fence with you again.
Chris

Actually I was intending on being at the event in Yarker, its much closer for
the both of us and fencing is at the core
of that event being one of the "Border Spat" series.

Sarnia is a bit far of a stroll seeing as school is starting that week and I
likely have pages numbered in the thousands
for the next week to read.

I look forward to the monkey love, but it will be easier to find me closer to
home....

Hi All,

Given the dedicated list for EAOD, it is my intention to play my
Provost prize at this event however, given the lack of other provosts,
I wanted to know if any of the other hopefuls were planning on
attending and playing their prize. Otherwise I will look a little
silly.

On a related note, I'm going to need some crash space for me and
probably Lucia and Lydia.

Has there been any word form the Preceptor as to how we will be working the
Prize fights.
I also requested the ability to fight mine at Season but was told there was no
set prize
formate as of yet and had to wait due to a waiting list of potential Provosts...

And am still waiting on responces to corispondence sent before pennsic.

Fabulous! So we'll all show up to SotW sorely out of shape and needing to
calibrate :)

Regardless, I'm very much looking forward to again crossing blades with you
Giovanni. Just make sure to save me a dance or two after you and Gareth have
finished slicing each other into bits for your Provost Prize.

On that - and more personal note - I had originally hoped to fight my Free
Schollar, and had even begun discussing my research project with THL Albrecht,
however, seeing as I have not gone anywhere *near* a practice in the past month
there's not even the slimmest possiblity of it happening. Perhaps at one of the
winter events? But we shall see!

Alas, no tales from me. The two days that I was planning to go fencing,
they were both rained out. It wasn't until afterwards that I found out that
those battles had been rescheduled for the following days.

It's my understanding that there are patterns in Janet Arnold's book...you
might ask at your group meeting if you don't have her book.

I'm not sure if I have it or not...still unpacking the books. If I do, I'll

There is one small diagram for a cod piece in Janet Arnold as part of the
pages on the 1562 Doublet and paned Trunk Hose (pgs 54-66). The diagram of
the construction is tiny but might be useful. The illustration on pg 55
might actually be more useful. Asa used this example to construct the cod
piece I currently wear with my fencing garb.

In keeping with the Norman persona I have going (yes... a 12C Norman
that fences.. go figure) I'd like to make an axe-shaped rigid parry
device. I wouldn't make the axe head very sharply inclined - probably no
more than a 1/4 circle (at the very most) for the top and bottom curves
of the axe-head. Basically, it would exist to hook a blade briefly,
steer it out of harms way (and my squishy bits) and then let it go. I
could make it out of a thin rattan stick (coated in tape obviously) and
foam with duct tape for the head so as to not damage anyone's blade.

Opinions? The MiT in me says that the axe-head isn't "entangling" the
blade but simply steering it and forcing the opponent to withdraw and
redirect their blade (of course leaving themselves open to attack...). I
see it this way as it doesn't actually lock or trap (ie: entangle) the
blade, just forces it out of the way with a bit more effect than a
simple stick. However, I realize this can quickly become a debate over
vocabulary. Thus, I ask all those who read this for their learned opinions.

My thanks,
Griffin of 'Thule

Hoskuld has used something like this for years and I don’t recall any
complaints about it. His axe handle is made from a piece of doweling.

I've always defined entangling as capturing the blade (not the hilt)
in such a way that if the sword's holder lets go the blade does not
fall. I can't think of any way that you could do that with an axe
head. In addition there are lots of people who use sticks with hooks
or other types of cane heads and those are perfectly legal.

The only risk, IMO, is if you make it too realistic such that your
opponent could mistake it for a real axe. This would be against the
rules.

For those who have not seen it, Hoskuld's axe does not have this problem.

Don't worry, we've had fencing Vikings in the area before :-)

It will be beautiful. If it fits the period, extend the ax part over
the back side of the haft, so that you end up with 4 places to hook a
blade, though only the one under the head is large, the other three
will work as well.

Our ax head was made by cutting bits of foam and wrapping it tightly
with duct tape. I'd recommend NOT wrapping it as tightly as you can
go, ours is so thoroughly compressed that it has no give, and you
wouldn't think it was foam without cutting it open.

I'd also stick with a hardwood dowel for a handle. I've had no
complaints about damaging other people, and we've been using it for
years. But the hardwood will stand up to rapiers and a rattan stick
will not, it will breakdown and turn into dust. (And since I'm
allergic to that dust, I won't fence you with it if I know it's rattan.)

You should have no problems.

Greetings!

While this isn't in final form quite yet (I'm planning on
a few tweaks for meter purposes, and possibly some additonal
verses), this gives some idea of the rescheduled woods battle:

Alamo Woods

Remember the Alamo,
Remember the East,
And recall the Wood's slaughter,
Where ravens now feast.

Remember the valiant,
The heroes who fell,
With sworn honour their watchword,
Of them stories tell.

Remember the five banners,
Control to be won,
For to guard and to hold them,
Our job to be done.

Remember the endless foe,
'Gainst poor counted few,
The dark woods that ran blood-red,
O'er allies of Blue.

Remember the battlelines,
We swore to cross,
Remember the cunning plans,
Despite which, we lost.

Remember now your lessons,
When racing to fight,
One blade 'gainst two case will fall,
Few Blue 'gainst Red's might.

Remember to guard behind,
'Gainst tricksters in red,
For quiet and subtle find,
One's comrades all dead.

Remember the King's strong words,
"Stories will be told!"
Of those who fought and died there,
The few, brave and bold.

Remember the Alamo!
Remember the East!

Hi all,

I don't know if you have seen the latest Tidings yet (ours arrived
today) but our Preaceptor has shared a list of prizes he has approved
for SotW and also mentions that no fair location or format has been
decided on for the three approved provosts (me, him and albretcht).

This would seem to indicate no provost prize at SotW and no indication
of when or how it will be taking place.

:(

That said, I'm still going to try my best to come down so y'all can
kick my butt.
