Further to this, it looks like we can have a post rev at my place after the
fencing practice. It will also be our A&S Night so bring your projects.
Again, this is assuming we have the room for that day, but everything seems
to be going well in the paperwork department.

Subject: [RapierMarshals] Tentative Date for a Megapractice

Greetings!

The Canton of Der Welfengau is planning on having another mega fencing
practice on October 23rd, the day after Crown Tournament. We just have to
finish our U of G clubs paperwork and we should be ok to go. If anything
changes, I will inform the lists post haste.

If anyone is interested in teaching a class, please let me know so I can set
up a schedule for the day.

Tentative Date: October 23rd
Time: 10 am until 6 pm
Place: University of Guelph, University Centre, Peter Clark Hall (UC Lower
Level)

As usual, I will be providing snacks and water. For dinner, I was thinking
we could try the Shakespeare's Arms again, it's a nice pub and the grub is
good.

If anyone has any questions please let me know. I hope people take advantage
of this opportunity to get together and play with their peers and maybe
learn some cool new stuff.

Yours in Service

Albrecht

It would need to have the appropriate meta tags in the document that would
work for Google's index crawlers.

Greetings from Gerrard:
It is my understanding that we can begin fencing shortly after
procession. Stopping respectfully during the finals and proclamations.

I have been witness to a rather interesting format:
Reverse Bear Pit Poker.

The Loser only remains in for a max of three then takes a card. ( All
shuffled and face down naturally )
Every time you win ( or above ) you take a card.
No one can have more than 5 cards.
You Must discard before drawing a card.
It would be nice to have two lists going so we get a nice mix of whom
we fence !!
I may occasionally ask if we need to shuffle the lines !!

So skill is an asset in the sense that you have more of a selection.
However Poker does have its risks and rewards.
Keep your hand or risk your hand ??
For only the best hand will win !!
I shall fashion up a few Blade buddies as prizes !!

Bring your fencing cards !!!!!

The Rapier Blades of Ealdormere

With chivalry and honour upon the field.
Our enemy's fates are forever sealed.
Try as they may to foreshadow these lands.
With courage and skill we shall make our stand.

Our blades may bend but we will never yield.
With chivalry and honour upon the field.
Our word binds us to protect the Lupine Thrones.
We pledge our lives whether we are afar or at home.

Stalwartly we brandish the blades of Ealdormere
As long as we do " Crown "and citizen shall never fear.
With chivalry and honour upon the field.
We have sworn an oath stronger than that of finest steel.

Rapier sharp are the blades that we skillfully command.
We stand like wolf sentinels to Your trillium bound lands.
A Lethal of fencers northern forged and as true as the
   blades they wield.
With chivalry and honour upon the field.

We need everyone's help with this:

We are looking at changing the "Approved Blades List" into simpler
criteria with minimum standards, with a high emphasis on the
flexibility of the blade.

To validate the plan, we need to gather as much data as possible on
the blades currently being used in the SCA for both Heavy Rapier and
Cut & Thrust, as well as blades we don't allow, but which might be
usable in the SCA. An online survey form has been posted here:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dG9zcUt4aWR6eHVGb29uWEJTSkV\
YMUE6MQ

You'll need a 3-oz weight and a 6-oz weight to do the survey. It
closes on November 7th.

From Gerrard: Ive been collecting data when
people and blades become available.
I am wondering and presuming about " Certain Blades ".
Those being the ones that already flex dramatically under their own weight !!
While it is easy enough to clamp the hilt
parallel to the floor the blades themselves certainly arent
parallel to the floor even before I add the weight.
1) very flexible blades
2) curved blades

I simply measured these at where ever the tip was
prior to the weights. Then after adding the weights.
If I actually placed the tip of the blade
parallel to the floor and in line with where it
was clamped the flex would have been HUGE !! ( 4
- 5 inches prior to weight(s) added )

In both instances the above blades still had 1/4
to 5/8 inches of additional flex.
I also tested the curved blades with the curve
down and the curve up. No difference seen
( so far ... more blades to test )

So continue as testing or ...??

Please continue testing and sending in results, it will remind us to
adjust the wording to deal with curved blades. And blades that
already bend under their own weight will be easy to see that they pass
:-)

Greetings!

I've picked up the correct weights for doing the flex test survey being run
by our illustrious DSRM Baroness Eyrny. If anyone is coming to a Der
Welfengau practice, I'll make sure I have the stuff there. If anyone wants
to get their own weights, my solution was two packages each containing two 1
1/2 oz Bass Casting Sinkers from Canadian Tire so I could make up two 3 oz
weights. I strung them on some fishing line and they seem to do the job.

er, do remember that the data gathering was for 3 oz and 6 oz, not 1.5 oz

Thanks, though!

Yes, two 1.5 oz weights equals 3 oz. So two packages gives me a total of 6
oz. I have two on one string and two on another. One string for the 3 oz
test and two strings for the 6 oz test.

Greetings one and all,

At Pennsic War this past August, TRM Aaron and Rustique sent Baroness
Eyrny Omarsdottir to sit her vigil for elevation into the Order of the
Pelican.

Baroness Eyrny will sit her vigil and answer TRM Quilliam and Dagmar at
Wassail in her home canton of Bryniau Tywynnog on December 3, 2011.

We invite one and all, regardless of rank, that wish to extend words of
advice or best wishes for Eyrny to come to her vigil to speak with her.
It will be running from after morning court until evening court.

If there are those that would like to speak on Eyrny's behalf during her
elevation ceremony, please contact me ahead of time at

Many thanks for your attention.

Excitedly planning.

Their Excellencies Skraeling Althing are seeking a new rapier champion,
which will take up part of the morning, followed by a rapier tournament. If
the weather continues to cooperate, there is also plenty of room to play
outside.

Can you Defend The Bunny? Or can you Slay the Bunny? A bear-pit style
tournament with a twist, the fencers will not be competing to defeat one
another, but to either protect, or defend a target.

If anyone needs/wants to authorize, let me know ahead of time, and we can
work something out.

I would like to invite one and all to the Rapier and Costume Academy on Dec. 3
by the Barony Marche of the Debatable Lands (Pittsburgh, PA) The event website
is http://www.debatablelands.org/events/rapier_costuming/

There are instructors from 5 kingdoms coming to teach. I hope to see some of you
there.

Mistress Irene von Schmetterling
Here is the current list of classes we will be offering (subject to changes and
addition):
Class Descriptions - Rapier

An Opportune Defense Lady Gabrielle de Winter
This class will demonstrate the use of the thrust in opposition, carrying on to
the use of the parry as an attack...that one may defend and kill within the same
beat. Required equipment: a sword for slow work.
1 hour

Basic training for the dedicated fencer Master Ian Muir
This is not an introduction to fencing class. This class is about establishing
training methods to improve performance. We will cover foot work/ body
mechanics, drill creation, working with partners, single rapier with a bit of
physical conditioning. Required equipment: endurance, patience and basic heavy
rapier equipment 1 hour

Cappo Ferro Master Ian Muir
This class is a basic introduction to the concepts found in Cappo Ferro. It will
cover stance, footwork, guards, blade action timing and distance. Required
equipment: fencing armor, and a preferably long (over35 inch) heavy rapier
blade. 1 hour

Étude One for Single Rapier Don Christian de Launey
A practical exercise of rapier technique emphasizing application, integration
and movement. This is suitable for practitioners of all levels. Required
equipment: single rapier 1 hour

Iberian Sword Play Sir Styker Langjar
The Big Sword by The Books -- the montante, the great two handed sword of
Iberia. Class will focus on the development of attacks, solo drills and if
another instructor joins me, two person drills from authors such as Pietro Monte
(1509), Pablo de Paredes and Luis Godinho (1599), Diaz de Viedma (1635), Diogo
Gomes de Figueriedo (1651) and Perez de Mendoza (1675). Participants should have
swords of a particular size (60 inches plus, but rattan, wood, plastic, or steel
will work), but instructors will bring some, masks and gloves are necessary for
paired plays. Instructor is Steve Hick/Strykar, but others may include Steve
Reich from Primo Assaulto.

Intermediate German Longsword for SCA Fencers: The masterstrokes Don Donnan
MacDubhsidhe
Learn the meisterhau, the master cuts of German longsword, and how to use them
in SCA rapier. Class will be hands on, but non-contact. Required equipment: List
legal (non sharp) two handed sword highly recommended but not required. Either
cut and thrust or Heavy rapier legal. Limited wooden wasters will be available.
1 hour

Introduction to footwork and point control- rapier 101 Mistress Irene von
Schmetterling
Just starting with Rapier or want to improve your foot work and point control?
This class is for you. It will cover basics in footwork and point control.
Required equipment: rapier simulator 1 hour

Introduction to the Rapier of Joachim Meyer The Hon. Lord Giovanni de Enzinas,
Baron Skraeling Athing
This class is an introduction to the cut and thrust style that was presented by
Joachim Meyer in his 1570 book "The Art of Combat" as translated by Jeffrey L.
Forgeng. Participants will be taught the basics of footwork, cuts, thrusts and a
number of basic plays for the remainder of the available time. In the course of
the class, the teacher will also be likely to tangent into comparisons to both
the earlier German fighting styles and also the contemporary and later Italian
styles but he will try and keep this to a minimum so that more exchanges can be
explored by the class. Required equipment: a mask and a single handed sword
capable of performing cutting actions safely (no schlagers), as well as safety
minimums as specified by the kingdom. Participants should be familiar with
swordplay in general. 2 hours

Late 16th Century Northern Italian Rapier Master Aeron Harper
This class will cover aspects of the manuals written by Capo Ferro and Giganti.
Depending on the experience of those who attend the class we can either start at
the beginning and build a solid foundation on which to build, or we can explore
various aspects of the techniques in more depth. Required equipment: Students
will need a rapier (blunted and tipped, of course) - preferably with a blade
between 40" and 45" in length - and a mask and gloves. You may bring a parrying
dagger as well in case we get that far, but we will be focusing mainly on single
sword. 2 hours

Outcome Oriented Fencing: Making your Playbook Lord Will Parris
The most successful fencers often talk about winning the fight before it begins.
What do they mean by that? Instead of gambling and hoping for the best, they
carefully choose what they want to happen in a fight, and more importantly, how
to make that happen. This class will cover the basics of devising your own
battle plan based on the examples of both period and contemporary fencers. 2
hours

Play the Angles, an introduction to Nicoletto Giganti's non linear approach to
fencing. Archibald Weatherford
This class will examine the bind, the affront, and the avoidance of the enemy's
guard in Giganti's system of Rapier. This class will be a hands on practical
review of the foundational plays of Giganti's manual. The knowledge and ability
to execute a proper historical lunge is a pre-requisite. Required equipment: SCA
Rapier legal mask, gloves, gorget, and rapier (42" baited rapiers preferred, but
not necessary, limited loaner weapons available) Recommended: SCA Rapier legal
armor. 2 hours

Spanish Circle: An Introduction to Destreza and Thibault Baron Eric Grenier de
la Barre
Instructor will present a Destreza circle, discuss its design and use as a
practice tool, and talk a bit about Thibault's Academy of the Sword. 1 hour

Swetnam's Rapier and Dagger: Italian Rapier English Style Master Aelfred of
Chester
Joseph Swetnam was the first Englishman to publish a treatise on the use of the
rapier. It is likely he borrowed a number of his stances from Fabris and other
Italian masters of the time and then gave them his own twist. This class will
look at several of the stances and how Swetnam said they should be used.
Required equipment: armor, a heavy rapier, preferably 40 inch or longer, and a
dagger 1 hour
