Where the hell is everyone getting this idea that I am a THL? I'm not...
And I don't want to be... in fact I've been trying to get them to take away
my AoA... I'm happier that way.

Just wanted to do another thank you for the chain gloves that Hoskuld
gifted the fencers at Trillium War this year.

Also, here's what the rules say about using them.

5. PARRYING DEVICES: (Note 6)
D. A mail glove is considered a standard rigid parry device. While
worn on the hand, it will be
considered protection against cuts, but not against thrusts. (Note 10)

the fact that Moon Walking is probably not the smartest thing to do on
the list goes without saying.

Hi folks,

My apologies for not sending this message before Trillies. Various
things conspired to prevent that.

First, a great wassail and many thanks to Gerrard for doing the Minister
of the Lists job for so long! Second, I am (for now) the Minister of
the Lists while we sort out some details about getting the information
we need for reports recorded correctly.

Even without warning, I stamped a number of cards this past weekend.
Some of which were out of date by almost two years! I realise that we
don't pull our cards out to admire them, so it's easy to forget that
dates in the mirror may be closer than they appear. Expired cards mean
more work for everyone. By the book, you need to reauthorise if your
card expires. That's a pain, so we all need to do better about catching
expiring cards. We're going to be working on checking cards more
consistently at events, so that should help people remember better in
future.

At any rate, if you're going to Pennsic and your card is expired or
expiring, don't panic. I will have the stamp at Pennsic. I camp with
Skraeling Althing (W18, on the lake). Just find me and we'll get
everyone stamped if they need it as they get inspected and stickered.

You can also do it the old fashioned way if you are keen or won't be at
Pennsic.
Send your card and a self-addressed, stamped envelope to me:
Larry Tremblay
910-261 Cooper Street
Ottawa, ON K2P 0G3

I will also be at Skraeling Baronial Muster and Baron's Howe, so you can
get stamped there as well.

All,

Please make sure this gets disseminated to people in all fencing groups,
as I'm pretty sure that not everyone is on the lists. This will also
appear in the Tidings (which of course not everyone gets.)

As you may recall, Albrecht held a moot at Trillies last year where one
of the topics of discussion was gorgets and required protected areas.
As a result of that, a recommendation was made to the Earl Marshal, and
has now been submitted it to the Privy Council, and that has now been
ratified.

The current version of the Ealdormere rapier rules currently states:

vi. Additional throat protection is also required; it shall consist of rigid
material, as noted above, covering the entire throat, and shall be
backed by either puncture resistant material (as a hood), one-quarter inch
(1/4") (6 mm) of open-cell foam, or their equivalents. The cervical
vertebrae shall also be protected by rigid material, provided by some
combination of gorget, helm, and/or hood insert. (Note 9)

This will be changed to:

vi. Additional throat protection is also required; it shall consist of rigid
material, as noted above, covering the entire throat, including both
the carotid arteries and the jugular veins, and shall be backed by either
puncture resistant material (as a hood), one-quarter inch (1/4") (6 mm) of
open-cell foam, or their equivalents. The cervical vertebrae shall also be
protected by rigid material, provided by some combination of gorget, helm,
and/or hood insert. (Note 9)

Basically, the hard part of the front of your gorget needs to come
around to the sides far enough to cover the blood vessels running up the
sides of your neck, where you feel your pulse. If you want to leave the
muscles (sternocleidomastoid, levator, etc.) towards the back covered by
only puncture resistant material, that's your call. From what I've
seen, the majority of us have rigid protection that encircles the neck,
so there won't be many people who need to make any changes.

This notice will appear in the September Tidings, so let's call it 1
September for an effective date for people to get any needed changes
done. I'll be updating the rapier rules to reflect this as well, and
get it online as soon as possible. If anyone has any questions, don't
hesitate to contact me.

I need elbow protection for cut & thrust rapier, at a minimum padding,
but some rigid would be good too. I've just checked out all the
hockey elbows at Canadian Tire and I'm not satisfied with any of them.
They are bulkier than I need. I do like that there are multiple
straps, so I could probably ignore the one right across the inside of
the elbow and use the straps above and below the elbow.

What other kinds of elbow protection should I look for? Lacrosse
comes to mind, but are there others? Any stores that I should look
at? I couldn't find anything lacrosse oriented at CT, but there
weren't enough staff on hand to be helpful either.

I've tried a couple different versions of basic elbow cups, but I hate
having a single strap going across the inside of my elbow, and I'm
having very bad luck getting them to stay in place and be comfortable.
At Gulf Wars I proved why it's a good idea to have the armour,
unfortunately it had fallen out of position and didn't do it's job.

I'm hoping for something modern I can try on, and even return if it
doesn't work out.

I use a pair of hard over soft elbows for skateboarding/roller bladeing.
The'yre nice and not to intrusive and have a double set of straps. I also
use a pair of stainless elbows I inherited from Hoskuld, but I haven't quite
got the padding down right yet. I find close cell foam a bit too thick and
cloth padding not padding enough.

The Ansteorran Rapier Tournament is one of the most wicked cool tournaments

at Pennsic.

Trust me. ;)

But the schedule book has the wrong time.

It is supposed to be Tuesday, August 9, at 10 am.

Get there at 9:30 a.m. Great food, great fencing, great prizes.

Please pass along.

Greetings unto all Rapier Fighters in the Known World from Baroness Eyrny

On August 1 I will be the new Society Rapier Marshal. Many thanks to
Sir Thomas Logan for his time and effort put into this task over the
last few years!

I call Ealdormere home, and have been involved in rules development
for the Midrealm, Ealdormere, and a past revision of the the Corporate
rules. I love visiting Gulf Wars and Pennsic, and look forward to
getting to know people from more places.

One of my goals in my new job is to increase communication with
everyone doing rapier. On Monday, August 8, on the Pennsic rapier
field, around 4 pm following the Don/Dona tournament, I will host a
Moot.

What's a moot, you may ask? The word comes from the Anglo-Saxons, and
for Ealdormere it's a custom where everyone gathers, any Royalty take
off their crowns, and any topic may be discussed. Questions can be
asked and anyone who knows can answer, proposals can be made and
commented on, pretty much anything polite goes. One of the topics I'd
like to see discussed is KWAR, and whether there is interest in having
another one. Please bring your thoughts and your own questions.

At other times, feel free to email me at rapier@... or look me up
on Facebook (Eyrny Ormarrsdottir) and send me a message.

Please distribute this to all kingdom rapier lists, or other
interested lists, and if you're coming to Pennsic, I hope to see you
at the Moot.

One of my goals as SRM is to improve communications to the rapier
community. Thus, I've started a blog to keep everyone informed.
Today's post answers the most frequently asked questions of the last
two weeks, come and read! http://www.sca-rapier-news.com/

I also hope many of you can join me at Pennsic for the Rapier Moot.
Monday, after the Don/Dona Tournament, approx 4 pm.  Ask questions and
share opinions on all things rapier.  Notes from the moot will be
posted to the blog, after Pennsic.

Hi All,

Yes there will be a Clancy Day, hosted by Starleaf Gate of the Middle
Kingdom(Windsor, ON).

So, if you find yourself in the Amherstberg, Ontario area on Thanksgiving
weekend, give some thought to crossing blades with our friends of the Middle
Kingdom.

Persoanlly, I'm looking at going and enticing others to join me! I'm hoping
that if a good number of us show up, at least commit to doing so, it will
encourage the same from our cross boarder friends.

See you in the lists!
Jocelyn

There is space for rapier, but they don't have any participants at the
moment. We have other plans.

Greetings,

We are having another special practice at Finally Oaks (Bismark, ON near
Smithville) this Sunday afternoon from Noon to Five.

Details including directions:
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=180489508677774

Directions can also be found here;

-Oaks.pdf

Currently we will have archery and armoured combat for those wishing to do
things martial.  We have space for Rapier and a thrown weapons range but
simply lack marshals.  So bring a Marshal and we can have those activities
too.

The site is a lovely piece of private property in the country with a
medieval hall, an in ground pool so bring your bathing suit, a stocked
fishing pond and lots and lots of space for fun.  Many gentles attend with a
chair and some hand work to do along with refreshments.  There will be a
pork roast on the barbeque cooked by Lord John the Rude.  A potluck
sideboard will also be available.

So if you would like a relaxing way to spend a Sunday afternoon with SCA
friends and fun please come on out and visit us in RIsing Waters.

YIS,

Richard and Annabelle
Baron and Baroness of Rising Waters

This list is NOT an official forum and is NOT run by the SCA and does
NOT define SCA policy. If officers of the SCA or any local branch post
things here it is in their personal and private capacity unless they
explicitly say otherwise. Even then, it only has the force that it
would have if they were saying the same thing around a campfire. The
