The Edinburgh Sir Walter Scott Club has been in existence for 115 years, having celebrated its centenary in 1994. It has a membership of 250, most of whom live in or around Edinburgh and Glasgow, but there is a considerable number from other parts of Scotland, and also from England and overseas.
The object of the Club is to foster the name of Sir Walter Scott through meetings, lectures, publications and excursions.
The Club is the senior and most active of its kind and has numbered among its Presidents distinguished statesmen, novelists, historians and men of letters, including Stanley Baldwin, John Buchan, James Bridie, Alec Douglas-Home, Harold Macmillan, David Daiches, and more recently, Allan Massie, Edwin Morgan and Dorothy Dunnett, Paul Scott, Magnus Magnusson and Tom Fleming. In its centenary year we were honoured to have as President of the Club the Lord Chancellor, Lord Mackay of Clashfern. Our Current President is the Duke of Buccleuch.
The Annual Dinner of the Club is held in March each year at which the President delivers a toast to the memory of Sir Walter.
Among other meetings there is a Joint Lecture with the University of Edinburgh English Dept. From time to time members also enjoy the privilege of a visit to Abbotsford.
The lectures and addresses are published in an Annual Bulletin, which also includes other articles of interest on Scott, his work and contemporaries. It is published in October of each year and is available now at a cost of £15 (incl P&P.)
The current rates of subscription are as follows:
£ 15 - Annual Membership. £ 18 - Joint Husband & Wife
£120 - Life Membership. £150 - Joint Life Membership
