Thanksgiving Purifies the Heart
 
"Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever" (Psalm 106:1).
"Thanks be to God" is often the attitude expressed among Christians for good health, for safe travel, or perhaps for a special blessing. Christians typically give thanks to God for all the good that encompasses their lives, yet, just saying the words "thanks be to God" superficially is definitely not an expression of it.
St. Paul once prayed to the Lord to take away his affliction, "Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me" (II Corinthians 12:8). But the Lord did not do as St. Paul prayed. The Lord responded, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness" (II Corinthians 12:9). Did the Lord believe that St. Paul's illness was beneficial for him? The message is that one's spiritual health is the priority, certainly not one's physical health.
An important self examination question might be, is good health being used for good or for evil in my life on a consistent basis? Should I ask for good health or sickness? Which is better for me and my spiritual life? What is better for each of us is to accept all troubles with thanksgiving and that restoration without troubles is by the will of God the Father as He all knowingly sees what is best for our spiritual life.
Expression of Thanksgiving

"Do not forget Christ's church. So go there in the morning before all your work. And meet there again in the evening to return thanks to God." (Apostolic Constitutions compiled c. 390, E)

How does one express thanksgiving? Attending the Vespers, the Midnight Praises, and the Divine Liturgy joyfully and with anticipation is an expression. Some deviations may be your job prevents you from attending, this is your only day off, or you need to study. Another deviation may be when late to a worship service you think that you made it; and you guess it is better than nothing. These are mere excuses with not an ounce of expression of thanksgiving within them.
"O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and give praise, even with my glory. Awake, lute and harp! I will awaken the dawn. I will praise You, O LORD, among the peoples, and I will sing praises to You among the nations. For Your mercy is great above the heavens, and Your truth reaches to the clouds. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens, and Your glory above all the earth;" (Psalm 108:1-5).
An expression of thanksgiving would be attending the vespers early, come inside the church and begin with a silent intimate prayer between you and our Lord, and taking the time for meditation by reading the Holy Bible in preparation of the worship to come. Giving thanks to the Lord for this day He has created for you.
Prayer is a strengthening act of thanksgiving for the weakest and the strongest. Our blessed Lord appeared to St. Ananias according to Christian tradition, the Bishop of Damascus and one of the seventy disciples. The Lord commanded St. Ananias to go to Saul (St. Paul) saying, "'Arise and go to the street called Straight, and inquire at the house of Judas for one called Saul of Tarsus, for behold, he is praying. And in a vision he has seen a man named Ananias coming in and putting his hand on him, so that he might receive his sight.' Then Ananias answered, 'Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he has done to Your saints in Jerusalem. And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on Your name.' But the Lord said to him, 'Go, for he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel. For I will show him how many things he must suffer for My name's sake.'" (Acts 9:11-16).
Not only was prayer strengthening for Saul of Tarsus but suffering would come to be strengthening as well. Saul of Tarsus would become a martyr and saint, St. Paul, who would endure all acts for and against him with grateful thanksgiving.
Acts of Thanksgiving

"Wisdom is praised in hymns, in the places of egress. For the death of martyrs is also praised in song." (Tertullian c. 213 W)

The devoted and wise prophet Daniel was given a gift by our Lord, to both tell and interpret King Nebuchadnezzar's dream. It taught to lay aside human pride, man was not infallible and the only indestructible kingdom was the Kingdom of Heaven. Daniel acted upon his gift to give glory to God.
"Then the secret was revealed to Daniel in a night vision. So Daniel blessed the God of heaven. Daniel answered and said: 'Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, for wisdom and might are His. And He changes the times and the seasons; he removes kings and raises up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding. He reveals deep and secret things; he knows what is in the darkness, and light dwells with Him. 'I thank You and praise You, O God of my fathers; you have given me wisdom and might, and have now made known to me what we asked of You, for You have made known to us the king's demand.''" (Daniel 2:19-23).
Daniel was a Christian finding himself surrounded by pagans. He thanked God against all laws for being born a Christian. He defied all social and legal issues surrounding his worship on the One True God. Do we thank God for being born a Christian among other Christians? Do you often think about those who desire to be of the Christian faith but have not achieved it?
Characterized by Humbleness
Humbleness entails being willingly obedient to the will of the Lord. When Israel transgressed against God in the wilderness after they traveled out of Egypt, the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and many of the people of Israel died. Therefore the people came to Moses and said, "We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you; pray to the Lord that He take away the serpents from us" (Numbers 21:7).
Moses did pray for the people. The Lord due to Moses humble prayers instructed Moses with a remedy...
"Then the LORD said to Moses, 'Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live.' So Moses made a bronze serpent, and put it on a pole; and so it was, if a serpent had bitten anyone, when he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived" (Numbers 21:8-9).
So great was this lesson of repentance and humility the bronze serpent was again referred to in the Holy Gospel of St. John 3:14. The devoted apostle and author stated that the bronze serpent was a symbolic of the Lord Jesus Christ Who was lifted up for our salvation.
"As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving" (Colossians 2:6-7).
We must be humbled seeking Christ, acknowledging His great humility. St. Paul said "But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the pure grace of God, might taste death for everyone. For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through human sufferings" (Hebrews 2:9-10).
Ultimately Purifies the Heart
"Truly God is good to Israel, to such as are pure in heart. But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled; my steps had nearly slipped. For I was envious of the boastful, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.For there are no pangs in their death, but their strength is firm. They are not in trouble as other men, nor are they plagued like other men. Therefore pride serves as their necklace; violence covers them like a garment. Their eyes bulge with abundance; they have more than heart could wish. They scoff and speak wickedly concerning oppression; they speak loftily. They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walks through the earth.Therefore his people return here, and waters of a full cup are drained by them. And they say, 'How does God know? And is there knowledge in the Most High?' Behold, these are the ungodly, who are always at ease; they increase in riches. Surely I have cleansed my heart in vain, and washed my hands in innocence. For all day long I have been plagued, and chastened every morning. If I had said, 'I will speak thus,' behold, I would have been untrue to the generation of Your children. When I thought how to understand this, it was too painful for me—until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I understood their end. Surely You set them in slippery places; You cast them down to destruction" (Psalm 73:1-18).
Through expression of thanksgiving, believing that all blessings you receive are gifts from God, you will lead a life of joy. You will learn to rejoice in all things and in any situation. Humbleness and suffering forged purity of heart within great prophets, and saints.
"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you" (I Thessalonians 5:16-18).
Joseph the Upright's brothers sold him into slavery. As a slave, Potiphar's wife attempted to seduce Joseph and when she failed had Joseph imprisoned for his purity of heart and mind. During the famine Joseph was a blessing to the land of Egypt and the surrounding countries affected by the famine. He prudently managed the affairs/grain crops of Egypt. He turned a horrible life into one of good. He never tired of thanking God for whatever befell him. He would live to see his brothers again and say to them,
"But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive" (Genesis 50:20).
Joseph chose to forgo personal desires and life circumstance to live a life full of thanksgiving to the Lord.
In the New Testament, when St. Paul the apostle was in jail he would sing in great joy to the astonishment of other prisoners and jailers. His love of the Lord His God and his purity of heart were clearly evident to all that looked upon him.
It was as St. Clement of Alexandria c. 195 proclaimed...

"Let love songs be banished far away. But let our songs be hymns to God."

A life of thanksgiving ultimately leads one to taste peace and joy while in this earthly life. May we all pursue the life of thanksgiving in which God's will becomes that of our own. Our heart is strengthened and purified.
Happy Thanksgiving not only during this American season but in our daily spiritual endeavors,

"Let us give thanks to the beneficent and merciful God, the Father of our Lord God and Savior, Jesus Christ, for He has covered us, helped us, guarded us, accepted us unto Him, spared us, supported us, and brought us to this hour" (Agpeya: Prayer of Thanksgiving).

What is the ascent to perfection which these words indicate? No longer must we
look to things that attract and excite us. We must take as our guide our own
longing for what is better. He says, 'Come by yourself' -- not out of sadness or
necessity, but by yourself, confirming your desire for the good by your own
reason and not led by necessity. Virtue must be uncoerced, voluntary and free of
all necessity. This was the case with David who realized that of all his deeds

H. H. Pope Shenouda III has assigned H. G. Abune Makarius to serve as bishop (overseer) of the North America Diocese of the

Eritrean Orthodox Church. His Holiness, Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of All of Africa on the Holy Apostolic See of St. Mark the Evangelist, has always demonstrated his abiding love towards the Eritrean people and the Eritrean Orthodox Church (EOC). This has been particularly so during the painful travails the EOC has experienced in the past four years. For this, the Eritrean people will remain deeply indebted to His Holiness.

His Holiness made this important decision on the heels of the historic meeting the Council of Clergy of the Diocese held with him in New Jersey on September 26, 2009.

H. G.  Bishop Makarius, a highly learned individual, was consecrated on May 20, 1991.  Although an Eritrean by birth, he has been a member of the Synod of the Coptic Orthodox Church for several years. He is now serving as a General Bishop in the United States.

H. G. Bishop Makarius had his first official meeting with the clergy of the North America Diocese on October 17, 2009. In the meeting, His Grace conducted a solemn deliberation on the current state of schism within the Eritrean Orthodox Church, the status of His Holiness Abune Antonios, the only and legitimate patriarch of the EOC, as well as the task ahead.

The North America Diocese of the EOC is pleased to have the insightful leadership of H. G. Bishop Makarius and wishes him success.

 

May God keep his inviolate Church true to her calling and advance the teaching of the Apostles.  We wish our Patriarch, H. H. Abune Antonios, health and many more years of service.

On the day after Halloween in America, the masks and costumes are removed, This
sermon uses the secular and popular as metaphor for a deeply Christian message.

The believers (sunday school) of St. Mary Bay Area (California) are benefiting by studying a resourceful and spiritually deep book written by Pope Shenouda "Ten Concepts". We are sharing it with you with hope that you will benefit from it.
 

INTRODUCTION

Concepts often differ in our present time: Everyone expresses his own views and there might be a contradiction among these different views, whether from writers, academics, philosophers or others... This may lead the young and the old to confusion and inquire - what is the truth? So, this book is issued to be part of the curriculum taught in church education and Sunday School. In this book, we speak to the youth about the concept of power, its sources, its characteristics: the power of the spirit, the power of the self, will-power, power of the nerves, power of the personality as a whole, power of prayers, power of faith ... for power is not confined to physical power! ... We speak also about freedom; its concept and limits and how freedom is not absolute but should respect others' rights and observe law and public order as well as God's Commandments... It is such inner freedom released from faults and not harming itself. In this book we explain also the concept of rest and fatigue, and how the body might suffer to make the spirit content and the conscience peaceful, and how a person might work hard to give others comfort. The concept of bodily rest and eternal rest is also explained. The book explains the concept of ambition - whether it is wrong or right. The concept of sin, its danger and impact on a person are explained here. The book clarifies the concept of offense, what may be deemed offensive; whether offense is a cause for sin, and leads to and facilitates sin, even when a person might not be guilty of offending others; as well as what the sources and kinds of offense there are. There is also an explanation of the concept of love and friendship, and the difference between love and lust, and the true friendship which does no harm. The book tells also about the concept of meekness; its importance; the difference between meekness and tenderness; the relation between meekness and courage; and the cases in which one loses one's meekness. The Concept of truth with all its meanings is also explained in this book; it speaks about the danger of half- facts, the relation between truth and justice, protecting others rights, the significance of defending truth and how this can be effected. It also states that truth is God, and whoever goes astray from truth, goes astray from God.

The book concludes with a chapter dealing with knowledge: whether useful or harmful knowledge. Finally we pray to God that this book will be fruitful for the benefit of our people and children. Pope Shenouda III

Power is one of God’s Attributes

Power is of course a desirable attribute. Every one likes to be powerful and God's children are supposed to be powerful. To speak about the concept of power, we shall deal with the following points: Power is one of God's attributes: - In the Trisagion we say, "Holy God, Holy Almighty..." - In the Pascha Hymn we say, "Thine is the power and the glory... " - We conclude the Lord's Prayer with the words: "For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory" (Matt. 6:12) - The divine inspiration, speaking about the Spirit of God, said, "the Spirit of counsel and might" (Is. 11:2). The creation process, the raising of the dead, and miracles are proofs of God's power.

(doing their chequebook, or making a list, etc.

DON'T DO THIS!)

The predator will be watching you, and this

is the perfect opportunity for him to get in

on the passenger side, put a gun to your head,

and tell you where to go.

AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR ,

LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE.. 

If someone

is in the car

with a gun

to your head

DO NOT DRIVE OFF,

Repeat:

DO NOT DRIVE OFF!

Instead gun the engine

and speed into anything, wrecking the car.

Your Air Bag will save you.

If the person is in the back seat

they will get the worst of it .

As soon as the car crashes

bail out and run.

It is better than having them find your body

in a remote location.

5. A few notes about getting

into your car in a parking lot,

or parking garage:

A.) Be aware:

look around you,

look into your car,

at the passenger side floor ,

and in the back seat

B.) If you are parked next to a big van,

enter your car from the passenger door.

Most serial killers attack their victims

by pulling them into their vans while the women

are attempting to get into their cars.

C.) Look at the car

parked on the driver's side of your vehicle,

and the passenger side... If a male is sitting alone

in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back

into the mall, or work, and get a

guard/policeman to walk you back out.

IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)

6. ALWAYS take the elevator

instead of the stairs.

Stairwells are horrible places to be alone

and the perfect crime spot.

This is especially true at NIGHT!)

7. If the predator has a gun

and you are not under his control,

ALWAYS RUN!

The predator will only hit you (a running target)

4 in 100 times; and even then,

it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ.

9. Another Safety Point:

Someone just told me that her friend heard

a crying baby on her porch the night before last,

and she called the police because it was late

and she thought it was weird.. The police told her

'Whatever you do, DO NOT

open the door..'

The lady then said that it sounded like the baby

had crawled near a window, and she was worried

that it would crawl to the street and get run over.

The policeman said, 'We already have a unit on the way,

whatever you do, DO NOT open the door.'

He told her that they think a serial killer

has a baby's cry recorded and uses it to coax

women out of their homes thinking that someone

dropped off a baby. He said they have not verified it,

but have had several calls by women saying that

they hear baby's cries outside their doors

when they're home alone at night.

 

10. Water scam!

If you wake up in the middle
of the night to hear all your taps outside running or what you think is a
burst pipe, DO NOT GO OUT TO INVESTIGATE! These people turn on all your
outside taps full ball so that you will go out to investigate and
then attack.

Stay alert, keep safe, and look out for your neighbours!

Prevent Swine Flu - Good Advice      
        
Dr. Vinay Goyal is an MBBS,DRM,DNB (Intensivist and Thyroid specialist) having clinical experience of over 20 years.. He has worked in institutions like Hinduja Hospital , Bombay Hospital  ,  Saifee Hospital  , Tata Memorial etc. . Presently, he is heading the Nuclear Medicine Department and Thyroid clinic at Riddhivinayak Cardiac and Critical Centre, Malad (W). 
        
The following message given by him makes a lot of sense and is important for all to know 
        
The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible to avoid coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is. 
        
While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu): 
        
 1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications) . 
        
 2. "Hands-off-the- face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (except to eat or bathe). 
        
 3. *
Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method. 
        
4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at using a Neti pot to clean nasal cavities, but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.* 


5.. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption. 
                 
6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.
         
Pass this on to your entire e-list.  You never know who might pay attention to it - and STAY ALIVE because of it.

When a man walks in the fear of God he knows no fear, even if he were to be surrounded by wicked men. He has the fear of God within him and wears the invincible armor of faith. This makes him strong and able to take on anything, even things which seem difficult or impossible to most people. Such a man is like a giant surrounded by monkeys, or a roaring lion among dogs and foxes. He goes forward trusting in the Lord and the constancy of his will to strike and paralyze his foes. He wields the blazing club of the Word in wisdom.

Dear everyone,

I  wish you all the best.And sorry for last week's interruption of "The Scripture for the week".I let you know that my Dad(75yo) passed away on 29/08/2009(surprisingly it was right on my date of birth) in overseas after he had suffered with diabets and other diseases.According to the information from Temesgen(my brother),my father was getting so calm,so peaceful person recently.I believe my Dad is at the presence of God at the moment,for God is so just and He didn't judge the way we judge to others.I am so fortunate in a way that my Dad was still alive until I myself became a Dad.And he had two grand children too,evethough he didn't get opportunities to kiss and hugg them physically.

Let's read this:-

Isaiah 9:6(Are you with out a Dad?You don't need to worry about for 
                       the child is your Everlasting Father!Amen)

       For to us a child is born,
       to us a son is given,
       and the government will be on his shoulders.
       And he will be called
       Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
