David,
I'm glad that was just a TACS moment. FWIW, I am now 3/4 through the
book and am finding it wonderfully written and remarkably well told.
So just as an act of professional writing, I think you deserve a lot
of credit. Not to mention serving as a terrific and credible
representative for the story.
I think it's worth taking a moment in this thread to reflect on the
tone of our interactions with one another and how we transmit our
messages and present to more external audiences. It's really
important to remember that things many of us (or subsets within our
community) come to see as completely obvious, are just not always so
obvious to outsiders and even to some within the parent community. We
do ourselves a disservice if we leap to strongly to conclusions
that "everybody knows....[fill in the blank]" And then we do an
additional disservice if we demand from each other some kind of
Stalinist orthodoxy with respect to how we phrase and represent
arguments.
The reality is, everyone does not even know that there is an autism
epidemic and at a practical level, simply establishing that fact
remains the most important work we can and must do. And this remains
a subject of great and active debate among scientific audiences that
matter to us. But when we succeed in establishing that fact and it
corollary that environmental causes must be involved, we are
certainly not at a point where mercury's singular causal role has
been "proven." It's a basic principle of the scientific method, that
theories can and should be subject to tests of "falsification" far
more easily than they can stand up to "verification." We may hold a
belief that mercury explains a lot and that is deserves exhaustive
research, even that it is a robust and powerful theory, but that is
not the same as "verification."
In short, I believe David is saying the only principled thing he can
say when he promotes the evidence and considers the attempts at
falsification. For the same reason, if we care about the truth about
what happened to our kids, we should not just blithely assume we know
all the science we need to know simply because a few studies support
our biases. We also need to reconicle the studies we don't like with
our preference for the models we preferred.
And we need to recognize that if we attack sympathetic voices within
our own community (e.g. David) and make them feel bruised and
unwelcome. just think of how others in a less knowledgable audience
may feel. Having been guilty of venting a fiar amount in public
myself, I would simply underscore how important it is to maintain
professionalism and respect for others even when we demonstrate our
passion for the issues.
Just my .02
Mark
