Welcome. Have you looked at stuff on SCA.ORG yet? Since we do not have a local fight practice at the present time the only other thing going on is archery practice in the Norwich area on Monday evenings. There are so great folks who may be in contact with you too.

If you go to SCA.ORG follow the links to Event, then East Kingdom. We are in the Barony Beyond the Mountain. East Kindom events are listed by month with locations and stuff. There are also various get togethers through out the state, generally with a specific topic. Like workshops. There are also things called SMOOZES. But they are listed on seperate yahoo groups. An area chatalain should be getting in touch with you soon with more information. You can also contact Baron Dinsdale for additional information. I will be working on getting some sewing sessions going a bit later on this year.

Philip
you have caught us in a seasonal luff
check the BBM web page as well as the East Kingdom page

there are events through out New England- what you attend depends on
your interests, finances and how far you want to drive.

If you are game for a trip to New Jersey- there is the Kingdom 12th
night event
there are some other winter events coming up
and at the end of January in Manchester New Hampshire we have the
largest shopping events north of Pennsylvania
and east of the Mississippi- it is called Market Day at Birka

there are local meetings, work shops and social get togethers- these are
announced on this list
also check the Neighboring groups
Barony of the Bridge (Rhode Island), Barony of Dragonship Haven- SW Ct

Hi Phillip,

Whereabouts in Norwich? My husband and I are up by Dodd Stadium.

I run calligraphy and illumination lessons out of my apartment, by appointment. Otherwise, you may want to go to http://www.eastkingdom.org for an idea of events going on within the Kingdom, and also the BBM website at http://www.bbm.eastkingdom.org/ for our Baronial newsletter, and other announcements on practices, etc.

East Kingdom 12th Night is next Saturday, held in Washingtonville, NY. You'll find a link to the event on the East Kingdom website, listed above. Highlights of the event include a masked ball, fencing, and fighting.

There is also a list of the local events here: http://www.eastkingdom.org/event-list.html

Birka, as mentioned previously, is not only a shopping event, but also includes fighting in heavy list, fencing, and youth combat, besides arts and science displays, at a hotel in Manchester, NH. It's a bit of a drive, and the event is VERY large.

Hope this helps, and please feel free to ask questions on this list - as you've already seen, the group is very friendly. :)

Welcome!

Hi Philip.

Excellent answers have been given to you so far, but I have a couple questions that may let me offer you some more answers.

1) How old are you? I know, kind of a personal question, but I can't tell from your e-mail if you are over 18 or not. Armored combat (a full-contact martial art using rattan versions of medieval weapons) has a minimum participation age of 18 years. (There is a weapons program for those under 18, too, but to participate in the heavy stuff, you must be 18.)

2) How far are you willing to travel on any given weekend or evening? There are fighting practices in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. There will be a large regional fighting practice in Springfield, MA on January 18th.

If you can answer those two questions, we might be able to steer you towards the areas that interest you.

And if you want to attend any events, arrangements can be made to loan you medieval clothing and make sure you have a "native guide" available to answer questions.

Let me amend Shiro's comment a bit.

Should you be between the ages of 16 and 18, there IS a fledging youth heavylist
armored combat group starting up, though not in this barony as of yet (I know
Eloi in Rhode Island is a heavylist youth combat marshal, and the west end of
this state also has one or two of their own).

Dragonship Haven has practices Thursday nights in Hamden, CT.  They do heavy, fencing, and youth combat at those practices.

Bergental has heavy weapons practice in Springfield, MA on Wednesday nights.

Hope this helps, and that you can make it to an event or practice soon.

Greetings Bowman's Rest (and everyone else)!

Below is a message from Their Highnesses regarding recommendations for awards.

Please note that you do not have to have an award to recommend someone else for it.  This includes Peerages.  If you think someone in Bowman's Rest (or anywhere else) deserves an award, PLEASE write to Their Highnesses and tell them why.

Here is an article I wrote ages ago (some of the links are out of date and there've been a few new Kingdoms) about how to write award recommendations:
http://www.greydragon.org/library/recommendation.html

And here is a link to the East Kingdom Order of Precedence page so you can look your candidate up to verify they don't already have the award:
http://op.eastkingdom.org/

And here is the link to the recommedation page on the East Kingdom web site:
http://government.eastkingdom.org/

Thank you!

Greetings!

Please note that the deadline for polling award recommendations has been
extended until February 1, 2009. We will be accepting non-polling
recommendations at any time, however, request that they be forwarded as
soon as possible as well to insure the awards may be placed on the
dockets and scribes have ample time to prepare the scrolls.

Recommendations may be submitted through the EK Website recommendation
form, or to prince@... and/or princess@... with
a copy to sdoner2@....

Kindly note the following regarding recommendations:

You do NOT have to be a member of an order or have a specific award to
recommend someone for that award.

The Order of Precedence and the information on specific awards are on
the East Kingdom Website (www.eastkingdom.org). You will also find a
form to submit award recommendations on the site. You must register to
use the form.

For all awards, please give as much background as possible. Kindly
provide specific, thorough and succinct information which supports the
basis for the award.

Give the local group and list any events you think the person might be at.

Check the East Kingdom Order of Precedence to make sure they don't have
the award.

We look forward to receiving your recommendations.

Greetings to the good people of the Barony Beyond the Mountains. Coronation is getting closer; the date is set for April 11, 2009. If you can, please contribute a gift for the Baronial Basket to be given at coronation by our gracious Baron and Baroness. I will have favor's kits ready as soon as the design is available, if you can find time to embroider one that would be great. Hopefully they will have the design ready before our next Baronial Meeting so I will have the kits with me there. Other needed things are Burden Tygers or Tyger Cubs medallion, Golden Lyre or a small toy for a child or anything that the Royals can re-gift to their subject. If everybody makes/donates just one gift we would have a huge gift basket to give away. I know there are many talented people in this Barony and I know that life gets in the way a lot of times, but anything would be greatly appreciated.

In addition to Gabriella's link for embroidered medallions, I also have a scan of the black and white line drawings of the EK awards per the EK Scribes Handbook. Hopefully the link below will also help for those interested in making Tygers Cub and Order of the Burdened Tyger medallions.

Right now, after talking to TRM, we are planning on moving the event to next Saturday, January 17th (anyone that can, pray we have no snow then!).

We just have to eliminate the possible move of site (which should be done sometime in the next 2-3 hours).

Thanks, Rosamund. I don't envy your position.

A lot of plans will be in limbo until there's word (long-distance
travellers who had booked hotel rooms, for instance), so can there be
a deadline time of when we'll know if it's moved or cancelled?

Thanks much,
Katryne

Unto the seneschals of the East does Lady Rosamund d'Alwareton send
(slightly harried) greetings.

Could you please pass on the word to your groups that the date for 12th
Night has been changed to January 17th due to an issue with the weather and
the site.

Also, if anyone knows of Stephen Bloch (Richmond Hills, NY), Barbara Kirk
(Springfield, MA), Elaine Ragland (New York, NY) or Laurel Rockefeller
(Brooklyn, NY) could they make sure they are aware of the change? I do not
have either a phone number or e-mail for these gentles. (Considering I
don't have contact info for 4 out of 167, I find myself feeling lucky.. )

Thank you all for your assistance in this matter.

There are two youth practices in the area. Dragonship haven's is Thursdays nights 7:00pm till when the heaves take over that side of the space(about an hour sometimes more). and Bridge's is Sunday's don't remember the time for the Sunday one.

This is Dragonship Haven's web page. If you click on the link for their Youth Combat Marshal, you can send an e-mail to Dzguinte to get more information about their youth fighting practices. She's great; you'll like her.

This is the web page for Bridge. Again, click on the link for Youth Combat to get more information, and contact Eloi. He's a good guy too, and very helpful.

There is a relatively new youth-combat division which uses rattan weapons instead of the pvc/padding weapons used by the younger kids, but I don't know much about it. If you contact the Youth Combat marshalls, they will be able to help you out.

Since you are 16, the Society will expect that your parents will be involved with your pursuit of this hobby. (Sorry, but the Law says you're still a kid, so we have to treat you that way.) Please let your parents know all of this information, and encourage them to contact us and talk to us. Don't worry too much about being under 18; this is a problem that will fix itself in a couple of years.

I encourage you to try to get to an event or practice, just to see what's going on and get an introduction to the SCA. I also encourage you to bring a parent or parents. Let us know about when you plan to come, and we will make sure someone plays "tour guide" for you, so you don't feel lost. We can also loan you clothing if you come to an event.

There are two youth practices in the area. Dragonship haven's is Thursdays nights 7:00pm till when the heaves take over that side of the space(about an hour sometimes more). and Bridge's is Sunday's don't remember the time for the Sunday one.

I am sure some one has more info on this than I. but, there is a youth heavy list ages FOR 16  & 17. My guess is, at the more active practices during the winter, there may be some action in this class. Shire, would you or Frodo, like to add better info for this youth man?

ok i was thinking of going to the practice (transport permitting) on
thursday at 7pm (i guess my chainmail might be here by then hehehe)
i wanted to know if i can use MY "spangen" helm (once its padded of
course) as it said in the rules that the MAXIMUM was 16gauge and mine
is 12 and 14 but having looked at the calendar i saw there was loaner
gear so no big
question two :do we HAVE to wear garb to a practice? cause if no one
else does normally i wont (mom might but <insert helpless shrug>)
because if mom cant get me there my brother can if he isn't working
and he does NOT want to get into the sca (too many expensive hobbies
already <guns cars etc >)

Generally, the only ones wearing SCA garb of any kind, at practice are fighters who are armored up, unless someone is working on garb while attending practice, usually spectators.

As Aunty said, garb is not required at a practice. Bring whatever gear you have along, though. Even if you end up in loaner stuff for your first practice, you will get LOTS of advice on how to pad the helmet, make sure the armor fits right, pad weapons, and so on.

Rock on!
