The Christian Center on 1555 Indian View Hts, here in Elko is
generously letting us use their facility to have a Christmas get
together on this Friday the 9th at 1:30. Here is what I was
planning. Nothing extravagent. Just a cookie swap and a few crafts
for the kids, but no lunch, so come with a full stomache, because
there will be cookies. I bought some ornaments of a shepherd scene
with the saying " Child of God" on them. The kids can cut out their
hand print, glue and put it together. They are able to put their own
personal picture in it at the church or take it home and do it. I
also was going to bring a few things like fruit loops and yarn, so
the little kids can make garland for trees, and a paper, stick pin
craft for the older kids to create christmas scenes for decorations.
Anyone with a holiday Christmas coloring book with simple pictures in
it, please bring them with you, the older kids need these pictures to
do their paper craft, along with construction paper. Also, I was
hoping that we could do a cookie swap as well. If we brought 3 dozen
cookies to co-op, we could share 1 dozen at co-op with every one, and
take 2 dozen home. I always love cookie swaps for great ideas and for
the fact you get such a great variety. Maybe someone could volunteer
to bring a big container with juice and some cups. That would be
great too. Anyone who has any other ideas for hands on projects that
they could share with the group this Friday, please feel free to
bring them. I hope everyone can come, but I only have so many of the
shephers ornaments, so please contact me and let me know if you can
come and how many kids will need an ornament. Also let me know what
kind of cookies you can bring. Thanks and hope to see everyone on
Friday.

I can bring 3 dozen Toffee Graham cookies. I can also bring the juice and
cups. I have 3 children who will do the craft- my youngest of these 3 is 4
years so I assume he can do the craft too.

Thank you for organizing the party!

Any age can do the crafts. The littler ones, may need a little help
from us, but that is to be expected. Please let any homeschoolers you
know, about this. The more kids and adults to participate, the funner
it will be. Thanks and see you there.

I can bring chocolate chip cookies. Cody is 12 and Clay is 10. Our
family will be going to the 3:30 movie of "Chronicles of Narnia" if
anyone wants to join us at the crystal 4 theatre afterwards.

On Dec. 28th the Free Press ran an article about workshops for kids,
including poetry writing, leather tooling, and drawing. The CPG is
also hosting some performances and a festival for kids, including one
specifically for homeschoolers and rural kids. I am going to try to
provide a link to the article. If it doesn't work, call Christina Barr
at the Western Folklife Center for more info. Her number is 738-7508
ext. 236. or call WFC to sign up. Same phone number, ext 239.

http://www.elkodaily.com/articles/2005/12/28/news/local_news/news7.txt

The WFC office has been closed since Dec 23rd, and reopens tomorrow,
Jan 2, so there should still be room in these workshops.

Hope to see you there!

Dear Educators:

The 2006 National Cowboy Poetry Gathering's Education programs are
ready for reservations!

This year we have an exciting selection of artists and events for you
and your students to enjoy. Space is limited so it is important that
you schedule your students as early as possible.

In addition to our usual educational opportunities that highlight
western traditions and poetry, this year we are featuring Brazilian
culture from South America during our Youth Festival, School
Assemblies, and Rural and Home School Programs.

Programs being offered this year are:

Cowboy Poetry Student Art Show
Art show featuring artwork from Elko County Students
The show opens Tuesday, January 17, 2005 and closes April 3, 2005.
Students' work will explore themes associated with Cowboys of the
Americas. A reception will be held for the artists, their parents and
the public in March before the show closes. Your art teacher will be
receiving a letter with more detailed information. All grades are
welcome to enter artwork.

Western Folklife Center Youth Festival
The Youth Festival will once again be held at the Western Folklife
Center on Tuesday, January 24, Wednesday, January 25, and Thursday,
January 26. This year's program will provide students with a range of
activities that educate them about cultures in both North and South
America. The event is appropriate for grades three through five. There
is a $2 fee per student.

Cow Kids Stampede
Cow Kids Stampede will be held at the Western Folklife Center on
Wednesday, February 1 with three performances. Recording artists
Riders in the Sky will present a fast paced show of traditional
western music and comedy. This is a performance you won't want to
miss! The show is appropriate for students in kindergarten through
eighth grade. There is a $2 fee per student.

Rural and Home School Programs
The Rural and Home School Program will be held on Wednesday, February
1 at the Elko Junior High Auxiliary Gym. Rural and home-schooled
students are invited to participate in a variety of activities that
include performances by Sourdough Slim, the Renato Borghetti Quartet
from Brazil, and the fun and educational Arivada Ramblers. After the
concert, students will have the opportunity to meet the musicians face
to face, ask
questions, and learn about Brazilian music from our international
artists. The show is appropriate for grades 1 through 8. There is a $2
fee per student.

On-Site Assemblies
This year we are offering two separate assembly options to entertain
and educate your students about traditional music at the National
Cowboy Poetry Gathering. Reserve your assembly as soon as possible as
availability is limited. Please note that not all performers are
available all the days. On-site assemblies are scheduled for Monday,
January 30 and
Monday, January 30.
Group 1: The Quebe Sisters (Texas) & Luiz Carlos Borges and Marizio
Marquez (Brazil)
Group 2: The Renato Borghetti Quartet (Brazil) & The Arivada Ramblers
(Montana & Arizona)

Tuesday, January 31
Group 1: Sourdough Slim (California) & Luiz Carlos Borges and Marizio
Marquez (Brazil)
Group 2: The Renato Borghetti Quartet (Brazil) & The Arivada Ramblers
(Montana & Arizona)

These programs are excellent for all grade levels. Times are to be
arranged with two sessions available in the mornings and one session
in the afternoon, depending on school locations.

Costs are $250 for one assembly and $350 for two performances by the
same performers at the same school.

Young Buckaroo Poetry Sessions
The Young Buckaroo Poetry Sessions will be held Saturday, February 4,
at the Elko Junior High School Auxiliary Gym. Students are encouraged
to perform original poetry, classic recitations, and western music.
This event is free to all participants and attendees.

To schedule your students to attend the 2006 National Cowboy Poetry
Gathering education programs, please contact me at 775-738-5668. If
I'm not home please leave a message.

This year's educational programs promise to be interesting,
educational and most all, fun. We hope you will be able to participate.

Sincerely,

Jan Petersen
Education Coordinator, National Cowboy Poetry Gathering.

Hi Folks,
I spoke with Jan Peterson at the Folklife Center and she suggested
these as the best times for homeschoolers to attend the events. If
these times don't work for you, talk to her about attending at a
different time.

Youth Festival: Wed. Jan 25, @ 1:25

Rural and Homeschool program: Wed. Feb. 1, from 10:00 to 12:00.

Cow Kid's Stampede (Rider's in the Sky): Wed. Feb. 1, @ 1:00

The homeschool program is in the Junior High Auxilliary building, and
the Cow Kid's Stampede is at the Folklife center. I was thinking that
it'd be fun to bring a sack lunch that day and eat at the tables at
the Pioneer Bar, in the Western Folklife Center. Jan said this would
be ok with them, although she couldn't guarantee the tables would be
empty. Weather permitting we could move to the railroad park, if need
be. Any other suggestions?

Please call Jan (738-5668) to let her know if you are interested in
attending. It'll help to have the WFC know that there are plenty of
homeschoolers in Elko interested in cultural events. Who knows what
they might be willing to do with/for us in the future?

Yee Haw! Hope to see you there.

Carolyn and I were discussing keyboarding programs.  This is one listed in The Complete Home Learning Source Book:   Read, Write & Type!www.learningco.com. It is recommended for grades 1-2.  They also have listed:  Kids Can Type Too! (6+ yr) and Typing Tutor 7 (10 + yr).  Has anyone used any of these or other keyboarding programs?

Welcome to Northern Nevada! I live in Battle Mountain (about one hour west of Elko on I-80). I am currently homeschooling my only child in kindergarten. . . and a new baby on the way. My number one suggestion: Read aloud to your children. Check out the book "The Read Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease" http://www.trelease-on-reading.com/ Many interesting books are used in the "Five in a Row" Curriculum by Jane Claire Lambert http://www.fiveinarow.com/ Good Luck! Sounds like fun! Could you please find out the name and address of the
bowling alley? I think you mean the one down by the 12th street
bridge, but I know we have new folks here who might need further
directions. Also, is there a charge?

Herbalyyys,
Wlecome to Elko, and belatedly, welcome to the ECHO group.

A couple suggestions on "class time" for little kids: when mine were
little, we would put on a cd of circle songs and start out with some
of those. Then we would hold up a little flag and say the pledge of
allegiance (something my kids picked up at a preschool coop we were
in). After that we might read a story or a book about nature, science,
or something they had expressed interest in, talk about the alphabet
(they LOVED my little chalk board) and do a small craft, or some such
activity. We also used the Five-in-a-Row program, which we loved and
was a great source for excellent literature. We would always have a
snack and recess, because those were my favorite parts of school when
I was a kid! We pretty much made a game out of "school" at that age,
which I think has really helped my kids have a good attitude towards
learning. Learning is fun, and it's sad that so many educators have
lost sight of that. Your kindergartener doesn't have to know how to
read, or write, or add, but if they learn to enjoy learning, the rest
will come in it's own time. I have often told my girls that the best
part of my day is when I see the lights come on. When they finally
"get" whatever we've been working on, their faces light up! They are
so proud of themselves! That to me is real education.
   Perhaps the most important suggestion I would give at this time is;
Don't push it. These little guys are like sponges, but they are not
always ready to learn academics at the age our school system says they
are. There's a good book called, Better Late than Early, you might
find interesting. Why struggle to teach a 5 or 6 yo to read when they
can pick it up so easily a year or 2 later. Think of all the anxiety
and low self esteem which can be avoided by not pushing. Set a good
example, provide a rich environment, offer instruction, then know when
to back off or try a different approach. The beauty of homeschooling
is that we can be flexible.

Let's keep in touch on some of the group activities you mentioned in
your other message. I'd love some help organizing some hs classes.

Take care,
Carolyn

I am offering to host a sledding party at my house in Spring Creek for
the Feb. 10 PE Coop. If we have good snow, we will sled here. If there
isn't enough snow, we can go up Lamoille Canyon. My house will be
available for folks with young ones too little to sled, and we can
gather inside for some hot chocolate and cider after challenging the
hill.
Be sure to check here for last minute snow reports! If you need
directions to my house, please email me offline. cbs@...

Think snow!

PS Thanks to Jolie for putting together yesterday's bowling! It was
fun and affordable. I vote for doing it again soon. Maybe for the 4th

Hi Folks,
Unfortunately we didn't get the big snow storms I was hoping for and
I don't have enough snow here at my house for sledding. While we could
try Lamoille canyon as discussed earlier, I would recommend the
Snowbowl on north 5th street. We were up there on Sunday and there was
plenty of snow. They have one hill especially for sledding with a nice
long flat run-out. Lamoille canyon tends to get a lot of snowmobilers
on the road, which could make finding a safe sledding spot
challenging. Let's plan on the Snowbowl this time, and if someone
wants to scout out a sledding hill in the canyon, we can try that
later this winter.
The road to the Snowbowl can be muddy in the warm afternoon, but if
we don't get any more precipitation, it may actually be dry by Friday.
To get there, go north on 5th street, past the end of the pavement
several miles, until you get to the end of the road. That is the
Snowbowl!
We have extra sleds and inflatable tubes for those who don't have
their own. There probably will not be any food or drink available on
Friday, so bring your own hot cocoa!

Remember: Friday, Feb. 10, 2:00 pm at the Snowbowl.

See you there!

Hey Everybody,

Julie Garner and I (Carrie Arnold) were thinking of trying to put
a proposal together for High Desert Inn, regarding the homeschoolers
having a pool time on March 3rd. This would be a Friday afternoon from
2-4 p.m. Basically we are trying to find out who would be interested in
doing this and then we can put a proposal together and ask for a
discount off of the regular price of 5.00 per head for children and
adults over 4 years of age who will be swimming. Once we know an
estimated number of people we can request the time and the discount
also. So call me or e-mail me and let me know if this is something you
would do if we can get them to approve it. Thanks.

So far I have put a proposal together for the High Desert Inn for the
request of their pool on March 3 from 1-4 pm and asked for them to
lower the fee from 5.00 to 1.50. I will turn this proposal in today or
tomorrow and they told me it should only take a few days to get the
answer or a counter proposal. I will let everybody know ASAP. Keep
checking this website for the update. Thanks Carrie
