I will also be retaking Entry 1 and would also be interested in the answer to
your question.
Thanks!

NBPTS is THE authority for whether you can do this. You will have to wait for their online response to you.
Candidate support providers are urged to direct candidates of any sort to the 1-800-22TEACH number and/or the online inquiry.
Do keep a copy of NBPTS' response with your NB materials.
During the 'first generation (pre 2002)" portfolios, entries had to come from different 'units of study'.
IF I recall correctly, there was a tiny bit more flexibility in the 'second generation' retake units.
In my purely personal opinion, it is probably easier to attack a new unit rather than trying to remediate a topic upon which you did not score well. Unless you know exactly where you were weak and unclear, you might be better off with a new unit.

I agree, narrarate the video in your description and make sure you answer all questions--and reflect what went well, what went wrong, what can be done differently.

I am a 5th grade math teacher, and I certified this year as a first time EA_Math candidate!(No one more surprised or thankful than myself!) I did score a 3.375 on the small group, but I think there are some strict guidelines about others seeing one's work due to work becoming mirror images--so I can't risk that, but I do not mind helping you--if I can. My first suggestion is begin giving students short discussion activities as practices and video tape often to get them use to the whole environment. View the tapes to learn what elements are good and bad. Then based on your particular class chose a mathematical strand that they are most interested in and build an activity that will lead to some 'discovery' like-- even though perimeter stays the same--area changes and becomes larger as the shape approaches a square--or-- discover the properties of equality--Once you have your video (it does not have to be perfect)--follow the questions
in order. When I analyzed my video, I also wrote through my video as it happened. I quoted what students said and then interpreted what that told me about their learning and explained why I asked a particular probing question. During the reflection always look for ways to improve the lesson and be honest about what you could have done differently to achieve greater student success within the videoed lesson. Always be sure to answer each of the questions given in the order given--follow it very closely. Hope this helps. Pam

Misty, what lesson did you do for small group? I did one on discovering surface area of a cylinder--didn' t do so well. I am redoing it this year. For whole group I scored a 3 and did it on classifying relationships as either directly proportional, inversely proportional, or nonproportional. IMHO, it's all about the quality of student conversations you can
generate through your small group activity. Can you structure your
activity so that student learning is self-directed (through your
questions) and you are only there to ask additional probing questions
that generate further (and overt!) student thought? Is the group
structure there in which students support each other's learning?

I certified in 2008. I used photographs of students in my math club. I also included letters the students wrote about what they were doing in the pictures and I had signed release forms for them.

Does anyone know if you can use photographs as documentation for entry 4?

Contact NBPTS at 1-800-22-TEACH or use the e-mail query address that is in your materials.
NBPTS urges candidate support providers to direct these questions to those sources.
(Photographs were allowed in the past. I am not sure if they still are. However, you will probably need to have a signed release form for everyone who is recognizable in the photos. That might be a problem with photos prior to the current year - assuming that photos are still allowed.)

I teach 6th grade math G & T students and we will be investigating collecting data in groups of four, placing that data on a graph and then using the graphing calculator to check for accuracy.

Hi, I would like to know what you guys have chosen or will be choosing as your lesson for entry 3 (small groups)
I used an investigation where students discovered the relationships of
angle pairs with parallel lines and a transversal.

I'm middle school math--I'm using measurement as my skill with students working in groups of four for part of the lesson and as pairs for another part of the lesson. I did incorporate it into a daily lesson with vocabulary, notetaking and whole class learning a song to go with it and an activity to build a Gallon Man.
That being said, for the whole class experience for Entry 1, I'm twixt and twain with percents/ratios/proportions or decimals/percents/fractions. I teach 90 minute block schedule.
