Yes again, but my idea was:
:"Getting new blood into the sport is tuff.. ya need a two place and people to train .. My idea on that is to train but no endorsements ..?? that's for the UL end of it .. Get'em trained and then go out and have fun .. If ya want to go on to the GA stuff well there ya go ..Go for it in a different way"

This isn't new info on this problem ... But we all see this decline in the UL realm .. What to do ..??  S.P. is still the same GA stuff to me ..The old UL way was a GREAT stepping stone to get aquatinted into aviation ..But like most Government involvement, it's over kill with the rules stuff ..And BIG bucks to fly ..$$

Corky, What exactly are you saying?   The problem is not enough interest?   I expect you hav more insight to offer.  What has happened in the last 20 years in ultralight aviation?
The good:  EGT guages, rotax (reliable) engines, gear reduction boxes, composite props,  better planes, better materials, more ballitsic parachutes, more training.

The bad in the last 20 years:  Fewer places to fly because pilots were irresponsible, rotax engines (yes both good and bad), the cost of flying has exploded, equipment costs, hangar costs, training costs, plane expenses, insurance costs, fuel and oil costs and more,  fewer instructors,

In the beginning ultralights were viewed as simple, easy, accessable for the everyman.  Not so today--thats why the decline.

First off, my apoligies. I had posted to the yahoo group list a couple of weeks ago that I would be late to the meeting because I was working until 2PM. I had also asked everyone to make an attempt to make the meeting since it would be our last one.

I had expected a large group to be there today.

But when I arrived at 2:50 PM, I found an empty meeting room and no one from the club present

I was originally kidding about this being the last meeting. I had hoped my intentional typo would spur some attendance. WIth folks wondering what I had meant.

Well, now, that seems kinda moot. The thing is, our club has been sliding down hill the past couple of years. I suppose I could blame Sport Pilot like others have done. I really dont think thats it though. I put alot of the blame on myself. As club president, Ive tried to make things interesting. Tried putting some type of program or bring in a speaker. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didnt.

The club has always been informal. Mark Bauer started it up that way. And it worked for many years. We all had such different view points on what we flew, and how we flew. I always thought thats what made us a good club. The hangar flying was always good.

Maby when we parted ways with Bauer is when it started? I think we may have lost some folks when we started meeting at the airport. It just wasnt the same as meeting out at the farm.

We have always been pretty spread out as membership goes. I think the guys from Albert Lea and Sleepy Eye and New Ulm came the farthest. I think thats great and I thank you for coming all these years.

And I know that none of us can make every meeting. Work, play, & family all come first.

Im sorry I couldnt do a better job of making the meetings interesting enough to make you all want to be there every month. I have all of the same things that pull me in different directions also.

The club is, what it is. One person cant do it alone. It takes a village. Sorry, stole that from a book. I know Ive asked all of you to contribute in anyway possible. Only a few took me up on that one.

I hate to end it. Ive made way too many friends with you all. I look forward to seeing each and every one of you each month at our meetings. And Ive been doing so since Mar 1993 when the club started

So, I guess it all boils down to the final question, now what?

Im open to suggestions

The way it looks right now, its not looking too good for our club to continue on it the way that it has

Let me know guys. You all have my Email address.

And please, pass the word around to those that are not on the email list

Dale and others,

This is only part of the problem. I can remember the Thursday night meetings we
had at the Bryant Community Center off Lake St in Minneapolis in the mid 1980's.
We would get 40 guys out to the meetings every time. Not everyone flew, not even
myself as this was before I built the Firestar. The interest was there and we
had camaraderie. It was all very good.

People can still go to meetings. It doesn't cost that much to go and learn from
others.

Over the years, attendance at the meetings has declined. I expected at least 10
people to show up at our Christmas Party yesterday. It was Laurie and I, Hugh
and Peggy. That was it! I was very disappointed and am now thinking about
disbanding MUA because of the lack of interest.

If people don't have the interest in light aviation, then either we need to find
new people, or stop beating our heads into the wall to get them out to meetings
and fly-in's.

I may disband MUA and start a new club for Light Sport flyers. We would have
regular fly-in's at airports only. Another thing I may try is talking to Kevin
Rebman, President of EAA Chapter 237 in Blaine, and see if I can start a Light
Sport branch of his club. They get a lot of pilots attending their meetings and
I don't quite know why. A great many of them don't fly at all. It must be the
love for large aircraft.

Ralph Burlingame
MUA President

19"

it's flexible enough to wrap around your chest, under your jacket, snowmobile

I haven't tried it while flying yet, but I used it in my car. It puts out

I got this from my friend
Subject: Best Holiday Decoration Ever!

Good news is that I truly out did myself this year with my decorations. The bad news is that I had to take him down after 2 days. I had more people come screaming up to my house than ever. Great stories. But two things made me take it down. First, the cops advised me that it would cause traffic accidents as they almost wrecked when they drove by. Second, a 55 year old lady grabbed the 75 pound ladder almost killed herself putting it against my house and didn't realize it was fake until she climbed to the top (she was not happy). By the way, she was one of many people who attempted to do that. My yard couldn't take it either. I have more than a few tire tracks where people literally drove up my yard.

Kind of feel like I gave in to the  man by taking him down but my neighbor did confirm to near miss accidents on the busy street next to my house. I think I made him too real this time

So it was fun while it lasted!

DECEMBER 2009

UPCOMING EVENTS:

Dec. 13 Lite Flyers meeting 2-4pm Faribault airport

November meeting:

We had 5 members in attendance. Del Voegel flew in with his FP404.

From the new EAA e-newsletter, Light Plane World: Good information for the
upcoming
winter

season!

Q. Over the winter I will not be flying for a couple of months. I have been told
that
every couple of weeks I

should start my two-cycle engine, warm it up, allow the oil to circulate over
the
bearings, and then shut it

down. Some people say I should also cover the intake and exhaust openings to
seal off
the engine.

A. This is a question that will bring different answers depending on whom you
ask. I
have learned from experience,

and it’s been confirmed by engine manufacturers, that this is really more
harmful
than helpful to your engine. The

problem is that when you heat up the engine and cool it down you are introducing
moisture into the engine. Also,

when you seal up the engine you are trapping in the moisture. Trapped moisture
in the
engine will lead to rust in

critical engine components, such as crankshaft ball bearings and connecting rod
roller bearings. Once rust is started

on these critical components failure is likely to follow.

If you are not going to operate the engine for an extended period, you should
fog the
engine with quality two-cycle

engine-fogging oil, typically sold in aerosol spray cans. Most engine
manufacturers
specify a procedure to follow. I

have found that it works best to remove the air filters, run the engine at a
fast
idle, spray the oil into each carburetor

for 10 seconds, and then shut down the engine. Remove the spark plugs and spray
the
fogging oil into each cylinder

for five seconds, ground the plugs and hand-prop the engine through several
times,
and then replace the plugs.

If I am using 100LL fuel, I am done. If I am using auto fuel, I will drain the
tank,
fuel lines, and carburetors. This

has worked for years without any issues. This way, I am assured that the
crankshaft
bearings, rings, and cylinders

are coated with oil through the winter months.

This is got to be one of the most "on the edge" comedy acts I've seen.  Tires must not last long and the wing tips must be beefed up pretty good.

Enjoy!

HI Gang

Its been a great year. I was finally able to make the move to a 912 powered
trike. What a great machine! I couldnt be more pleased.

Im also thankful for the friendships that we have formed thru the club, and thru
our flying activities.

With that in mind, please make an effort to come to the Dec meeting. It will be
our last one.

Ill be an hour late as im working until 2PM that day. So I should bet there by
3pm.

Hope to see you all there.

Search for Skyranger--one with a 582 for 18,000.  Depending on where you will fly from and how big you are, also check out Titans--several for less than 20,000 with Jabiru or 912 engines.   Kolbs are also great used planes.  Fly as many palnes as possible so you can see what they are like.

Rans S6S with a 912 that was caught in a hail storm for $20k. Needs recovering but you'd have a 50 to 60k airplane when you're done. There's also a nice 2 place X-AIR Standard with a 582 and 56hrs since new for $14,000. Both listed on Barnstormers. Go on youtube and watch some videos of  X-AIR racing. Just some Ideas.

What do you guys think of a new Challenger 2 with intercom, headsets, VHF radio and electronic instrument display. It has 6 total hours on it.
It's a long wing.
Ready to fly, registered, for $20,000.

Does this sound like a deal or not.

Thanks for any advice,

Hi all,
I just uploaded a new Weedhopper flying video. I got another 45 minutes of

now,

Tim,

I bought a really nice 912 80hp Kolbra for 28K. You can get a 912 80hp aircraft
for 17K. Just have to look.

That may be a little high.  Search Barnstormers and see what they are going for.  This is a buyers market.   Before buying a Challenger I also encourage you to fly as many planes as possible.
