It would never be proper to expect someone to give personal information to a list.  If, as I suspect, Ealdomere works like other Kingdoms, the usual way to apply would be to send a resume to the Kingdom Chirurgeon and the Kingdom Seneschal (Or the Crown, or Both).

That being said,  was the expectation that we post personal information on this site, if we were applying for the position of Kingdom Chirurgeon?

The yahoo group isn't actually the appropriate place to post this: I have
taken his information and it's in the list of those applying for the
position of course.

All applications can be sent to me privately. I will then collate them,
review them, and ultimately bring my recommendation to the Privy Council.

Cheers!

yes,
appreciate the thought

As shown my personal information is out there, I've never been one to worry to much about it.
my resume has been "out there" for a long time and I'm sure all the personal information given isn't already out there somewhere anyway.

In the society, My name is Drake Abernan,
And if you "play" in Ealdormere, You'll probably just know me as the guy who moved up here from the East Kingdom who is part of Timberwolfe and GodWeisel.
My Knight is Syr Gunter, (whom has moved to South Carolina).

Just two quick reminders, folks:

1) The deadline to apply for my position, Kingdom Chirurgeon of
Ealdormere, is MAY 1 of this year! I would like whoever is the
successful candidate to take over by PENNSIC, with a couple of months
working with me to become familiar with the duties, etc. etc.

2) If you have not already done so, I NEED COPIES of all your
certification PLUS your SCA membership card. ASAP!

Many thanks: have a good and safe spring/summer event season!

To the Chirurgeons of Ealdormere, greetings!

I am pleased to announce that I have received four complete
applications to succeed me as Kingdom Chirurgeon for Ealdormere: not
bad since, when I took over, that was the total of warranted
Chirurgeons in the entire Kingdom!!!

I have passed on all four applications to the Privy Council, and
with luck we will be deciding on my successor at War of the
Trillium. If the candidate is available, I would like to install
him/her asap after the decision is made. I'm overdue for some R&R.

I will also be talking to the autocrats of Trillies, to find out if
they are ameniable to hosting the Third Annual Chirurgeon's Picnic.
As in past years, the idea is a pot-luck where the Chirurgeons in
Ealdormere can get to know each other, invite others who might be
interested in joining us to meet us, and to talk about anything and
all things which might interest us.

So please try and join us (I'll update everyone on the Picnic
day/time/location soon) for some convivial food and chatter.

Good luck to all four candidates! No matter which of you succeed me
in the position, I will sleep well at night knowing that my
successor will do Ealdormere (and our boo-boos) proud.

Cheers all!

Greetings everyone,

For some of you this is a reminder, for others this may be new information.

On June 21st and 22nd, I am offering a Standard First Aid/CPR course in Gananoque (approx. 20 mins east of Kingston). This is the full 16 hour course and I will be doing it at cost. What that means is that it will only cost each participant $18.00 ($15.95 for the book, $2 for the card).

If you are interested, please contact me for further details. I only have space for 20 people on the course, so please email me ahead of time to reserve a spot.

If you have already contacted me about this, please do so again so that I can confirm your spot.

In service,
Baroness Xristina Viaceslavova

Brian Goodheart the Green Guy (mundane Brian Laxson) here

Im interested, though I have to look at the logistics of being there.

Living in Toronto and from what I recall of getting to that part of
Ontario dont belive I can go back and forth both days.

Can you provide a mapquest link?

Is there any crash space there? or accomodations in a hotel?

If I can sort this out would prefer to learn from a fellow SCAdian.

I will also be attending for the weekend.

I don't know if my friends in Gananoque have crash space, but perhaps
someone else in Kingston (a mere 15 min or so up the 401) would have room?

Hi Freda!

Glad to have you on the list - I'm TSivia, the outgoing Kingdom Chirurgeon.

To be an officially rostered Chirurgeon (first-aider) within the SCA, you
need to have three things: current CPR, First Aid (and an RN is of course,
a permanent certification), and an SCA paid membership.

The way things work with us is that you will work as a
"chirurgeon-in-training" (hands-on treating with a more senior chirurgeon
just keeping an eye out, mostly with issues that are SCA-unique like
injuries when someone's still in armour, etc. etc.) for (generally 3)
events. Then when you've been cleared (and it also gives you a little of
the concept of how the SCA handles first aid issues, and also our unique
issues, similar to sports first aid) you are certified as a full treating
Chirurgeon.

Our third level is "mentor chirurgeon", and that's basically someone we
feel will be calm in a "situation", and also is a go-to person for advice
(literally, mentoring). Most chi's never become Mentors...a few do. I
think we've got 6 or so out of about 28 active chirurgeons in Ealdormere.

If you're at War of the Trilliums over the Canada Day weekend, there will
be a pot-luck Chirurgeon's Picnic on the Saturday, scheduled to start
around 11 am. So if you make it, please drop by and introduce yourself.
You'll get to meet some of us in person that way.

Welcome to the SCA!

a) A reminder that the 3rd Annual Chirurgeon's Picnic (pot-luck)
will be THIS Saturday between approx. 11 am and 1 pm(ISH). We will
be under my taupe sunshade (10' x 10'), look for the Chirurgeon's
banner (BIG one). It will be somewhere near the A&S area at
Trilliums. Bring your own chair or blanket. Come on over even if you
don't have something foodwise to share, and get to meet some of the
Kingdom's chirurgeons. IF you are on duty during this period of
time (teaching A&S, fighting, marshalling, Royal entourage, etc.)
LET ME KNOW and I will endeavour to have a sandwich and other food
sent out TO YOU courtesy your compatriots.

b) For those of you attending Pennsic this year, I have sent out the
most current roster to the CIC for War, Lady Elizabeth of the East.
This includes all CITs and others current as of this past weekend's
first aid/cpr course with Baroness Xristina in Greyfells.

Once more: If you have NOT recently updated your certs with me,
PLEASE send me a scanned copy OR photocopy c/o the university asap.

I am stepping down in court this weekend. It has been my pleasure
and honour to work with all of you over the last two and a half
years. I know that whoever Privy Council chooses as my replacement,
she/he will continue to serve all of you well.

See some of you this weekend!

I'm delinquent in sending you this, and as I took them out to take a

Brian the Green here,

Given the wonders of modern technology giving reports in via posting
seems like a move we ought to consider. If its really needed I can
surface mail these.

Situation 1:
Patient young female observed to have fresh small abrasian about 1-
2cm across on right upper arm. Food substance goo including seeds
are crossing the opened area. Patient is not aware of source of goo
& seeds.
Assessment:
No life threatening state and patient communicative.
I am concerned of possible infection of goo covered abrasian.
Offer assistance and patient agrees.
Treatment:
Cleaned wound with antiseptic wipe. Offered bandage but patient
declined.
Boo boo not actually kissed.
Follow up observation:
Patient observed later to be fully functional, wound clean in color.
Dark red of a blood scab formed on one edge of treated abrasian.

Situation 2:
Friend of patient approaches Chirugeon Percieval whom I standing
next to. Friend does not provide details but voice has a sense of
urgency. We both move to attend.
Assessment:
Patient, female, is communicative and requests privacy with
Percieval which is granted. I relocate to block entrance to sunshade
from other walkers by.
Patient shows to Percieval a concern located on inner thigh.
Percieval conducts assessment which is that a bruise of unknown
source also has an insect wound in the center. Patient is concerend
of possible allergy.
Percieval is aware patient was given "reactine" earlier that day.
Treatment:
Consenus is we cant be sure if there is a correlation between the
bruise and bite.
Patient is advised to monitor injury. Patient is also advised to
contact Chirugeons if pain should develop.
A mundane nurse is present (Vicontess Margaret) who is advised of
the situation for advise and to be pre-informed in case state of
patient declines.
Followup observation:
Patient is observed later that night enjoying the day normally.

Greetings all, from TSivia!

For those who didn't make it to court for Trilliums: here's a few
tidbits
from the chirurgeonate.

I will remain in office as Kingdom Chirurgeon until probably October
when
Royalty, myself, and a successor can all be at the same court to
hand over
the office. (My summer is pretty hectic.)

We have new fullly-warranted Chirurgeons, all announced at Court.
Congratulations to:
Brian Goodheart
Gina della Dragoni
Lerthan Ingen Chormaicc Maicc Morgaind
Thomas Drake Abernan
And as well, I did recognize the fact that Lord Edmund de la Haye was
recently elevated to full Chirurgeon status (with the able aid of
*THL
Mebh).

AND in particular, I would like offer thanks for the years of
Chirurgeonate service offered to the Society by Baron Garwig der
Waffenschmidt. He is Ealdormere's first Chirurgeon Emeritus, an
honourary
title for those who have asked to retire from active treatment
service but
who the Chirurgeonate still recognizes as a "go to" person for
advice and
mentoring. He received a hall-ringing reception from the populace,
with
many standing on their feet and cheering. It was my honour and
pleasure
to recognize Garwig as an Emeritus, and he is allowed to bear the
chirurgeonate badge of an Emeritus (which features an owl with a
fleam).

There is still lots of room in Ealdormere for more chirurgeons.
Maybe I
need someone to translate "boo boo kisers are us" into Lation or
Gaelic?
<GRIN>

Still serving Ealdormere where I may, kissing those boo boos!
TSivia

*PS: That is not a typo btw: THL Medb ingen Dungaile received her
Crucible
this weekend as well. (I was sitting next to her, watched the
stunned look
of disbelief and EVERYONE heard the disbelieving "NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
that
followed.) Waes Hael to all who received awards at Court!

hey all,

Not always the case.......

I respond in a rural area.....and even in town......Epi-pens don't always work the way they should (hands on knowledge).

We don't have them in our response bags,, even though we have 3 campgrounds and 1 golf course in our response area.

Seperate question...
In the recent issue we where inside a large city with nearby hospitals.
One person associated with epi-pens (family of someone who uses them) mentioned they get about 20 minutes from epi-pen usage.
What about the rural events? Im not sure about the time-site for 911.
Do we get anywhere close to that 20minutes for ambulance arrival?
911 does have all the training and equipment so even if they arrive at the short end of a timeframe they can..er.. correct the situation.

Having checked at work (I dispatch for Halton Police and we are central answer for Halton 911) Paramedics carry Epinephrine (SP?) the stuff that's in an epi pen in a liquid injectable form. However even in Halton we have some rural areas that are on the outside of 15 minutes from the nearest EMS base in good weather and no traffic. Just as an FYI the site used most recently for Fruits of Our Labours and Murder Melee is in Halton and about 10 minutes from the closest EMS base and nearer to 20 to 25 from the closest Hospital. Add a few minutes to that for the people on site to actually call 911 and pass the info on etc. and there is your 20 minute window shot and that's only if an EMS unit is at the base and available for the call.

However I would still rather have 911 called and EMS on its way than try to rely on a nervous/excited unfamiliar with the area unskilled in emergency driving techniques person racing through the streets in a passenger car unable to assist me in any way while enroute trying to get me to a hospital. Not to mention that at many SCA camping events depending on the time of day or night you may be hard pressed to find a licensed driver willing to do this that was either awake and ready to go or sober enough for the chore in the limited time frame available.

Hi,

"We don't have them in our response bags"
"We don't have them in our response bags"

This is because you are not allowed to, by law.
You are unauthorized, to carry any medications.
It has nothing to do with whether they work or not but is a matter of training and certification.
You still need a script to obtain an epi-pen which still makes its administration a controlled medical act. To my knowledge none of the fire departments are signed off by a base hospital to do this. (In Dufferin County)
If a patient has their own medication, prescribed to them, a fire fighter might help them administer it.

Our Paramedics in Dufferin County are authorized to carry them.
Dufferin County has Peel Region there are two levels of Paramedic; Primary Care and Advanced Care.

Primary Care Paramedics attend school for two years to become certified, they are trained to perform defibrillation, and are authorized to administer 6 symptom relief medications. Primary Care Paramedics are the standard in Ontario, and make up the majority of Paramedic teams in the province.

Advanced Care Paramedics attend an additional year of school, carry a larger assortment of medications and can perform more procedures. These additional procedures include IV starts, intubation and other advanced airway procedures.
(We are attached to a Base Hospital here.)

They try to always pair up a P1 with a P2 here, in Dufferin County and in Peel.

"......Epi-pens don't always work the way they should (hands on knowledge)."

This part is sad, and I am truly sorry if it happened, but it should not always be the case...

Epinephrine has a short "shelf life" of approximately one year.
If you carry an "Epi-Pen Sr. Or Epi-Pen Jr. ,(0.3 and 0.15 mg epinephrine),
Please check the exp.  Date on the side of the barrel.

(we are all human :) and don't always "check the expiration dates:)
If the epinephrine becomes "cloudy" or turns a yellowish or brown co lour, do not use it.
(take it back to the pharmacy from where it came to be disposed of properly.)

There is also the Twinject, auto-injector that provides 2 doses of epinephrine in 1 device.
(Unfortunately, many people with severe food allergies may need more than one dose of epinephrine if they accidentally eat the food to which they're allergic.)
(no finger pointing or harsh feelings in this please :D, just clarifying.  Hope it helps.)

Greetings everyone from your new Kingdom Chirugeon,

First off, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dame Tsivia for all her work these last three years. It was under her guidance that the chirugeonate ranks have grown to the numbers that they have and I am sure that I am shortly going to realize just how much effort she has put into this office. Wassail Tsivia and enjoy your time off.

I know that there are those who do not know me so I thought I would take a bit of time to introduce myself and give you some information on my background. I have been involved in the SCA for 18 years and though I started in Castel Rouge (Manitoba), the majority of my SCA experience comes from Ealdormere. During my time in the SCA I have held many different offices and have learned from each of them. I am sure there is more I am going to learn from taking on this one.

Outside the SCA, I have been a paramedic for over 10 years. As well, I teach part-time with the paramedic program at the college level and I have been teaching first aid courses for a number of years. While my work as a paramedic is going to have some obvious applications within the chirugeonate it is the teaching aspect of my experience that I most hope to utilize within this new role.

Education is one of the best tools that anyone has to help deal with situations. It is a tool that I personally strongly believe in and know that everyone benefits from. While I understand that the Kingdom chirugeon's role has very strong administrative aspects to it I hope to bring an element to education to it. There are a couple of ways that I am hoping to accomplish this.

Dame Tsivia had started the chirugeon's picnics at War of the Trillium and included guest speakers. I thought that this was a fantastic idea and am hoping to build upon it. More about this will be forthcoming as it gets developed.

Another tool that I am hoping to use will be scenario discussions on the ealdormere chirugeons yahoo group. What this involves is a posted scenario to the list with some questions (and no, this is not a test) which can then be answered either individually or on the list. My goal is to stimulate discussion about actual scenarios seen within the SCA as I find that discussion between peers is one of the best ways to learn. The scenarios will be based on real-life events, preferably ones that I've managed to dig-up through old event reports. This way they will have direct application to our organization. These will not be starting until January as I need some time to review the old reports and develop the program. If anyone has any questions about this, please feel free to contact me and I will do my best to answer.

And finally, as a reminder, all your event reports need to come directly to me and if, at any time, EMS has been called to an event then I need to be contacted within 24hrs of the event. This is SCA policy. My contact information is at the end of this letter.

If anyone has any comments or questions for me, please do not hesitate to contact me. For the most part I prefer email communication and I aim to reply to all emails within 48 hours. I am usually fairly successful at that goal. If you need information faster than that then please do not hesitate to call me.

In service,
Baroness Xristina Viaceslavova

Thank you. It has truly been a joy to work with all of you for the last 3
years. I will savour my "time off" and anticipate that I will find yet
more things for me to work on w/in the SCA as well as outside of the
organization.

Congratulations to Xristina for taking over the job and also thanks to the
other 3 chirurgeons who applied. It was NOT an easy decision for the Privy
Council to make.

And now: onto kissing boo-boos!
