Heyya Brendan!
<<LOL>>

A lot of kingdoms are going that way. The minor issue here is that we
have various additional first-aid training org's in the COmmonwealth you
don't have Stateside...and we've accomodated them in this manner
explicitly (e.g. St. Johns ambulance, royal lifesaving society, cdn. ski
partrol).

I'm going to talk to our SC who is one of mine (my x3 predecessor in this
office) and see if she thinks that would be a sufficient move for us. *I*
think it'd be a lovely short-cut. <Grin>
See you at Estrella by any chance?

Unfortunately Estrella is out this year.  I have a business / pleasure trip to Dallas Tx to make the end of the month.  I have a big project I am working on that will tie up a lot of my time too.

Maybe what you need to do with the Handbook is make the Society Handbook the Kingdom Handbook, with the addition of an "Appendix A - THe following orginizations training courses

are consider acceptable.  This List is not exclusive:"  That way if some new group springs up that fits the bill the Appendix (and Handbook) do not exclude them.

At this time I would like to thank my awesome chirurgeonate staff, who kept things going and kept me semi-sane (ok at least out of the loony bin/rubber room). Each of you as staff did an awesome job and made Caelin's and my last year as Chirurgeonate Department Heads so easy. You can be proud of leaving the chirurgeonate at GW in great shape after the last 4 years. From the back of Morgans golf cart to the wonderful point we have, from no RATTs to Sir Rey & Sir Jon Paul saying our RATTs were awesome, to just having a plain good time at the revels over the last 4 years, as my fav CANUCK would say YA'LL ROCK.

I would also like to thank all of the chirurgeons & CiTs from around the known world who did shifts at GW this year. You all can be proud of being there for your fellow Scadians.

The best praise I can give everyone of the chirurgeons, weather staff of just those that puled shifts or worked the battles, is that not only would i let ya'll (well maybe not morgan as god only knows what he would do or put what where) work on me but on my family (yes even morgan here as he would only have fun with me) also.

ANNOUNCEMENT re: CiT's at PW36

Before I get to the meat of this I'd like to give y'all a bit of
history (and perhaps an insight into my thought processes) into the
reason why we were initially disinclined to allow CiT's. This goes
all the way back to before the November meeting, and in fact to when
I was first appointed as Deputy Mayor in charge of the Chirurgeonate
at Pennsic.

As I personally know next to nothing about what y'all do, in order
to be responsible in my direction of this department, the first
action I took was to enlist the counsel of someone whom I both trust
and consider to be an expert in the field, Viscountess Kaellyn. (Hey
Kim!). This was, incidentally before Master Justin took the post of
War Chirurgeon/First Aid Coordinator.

Among other things I asked Kaellyn: "If you were running this
department and you had to draft a set of rules & guidelines that
would ensure the physical & legal safety of patients &
Chirurgeons alike, what would they be?"

Her Excellency came up with a set of rules & regs, which other
than a very few, very minor modifications, is basically the
operational game plan that has been set before you for PW36.

Understand that the Mayor & I didn't pull this game plan out of
thin air, our heads, or other, more southern parts of our anatomy.
We consulted an expert to try to do right by Pennsic War and
everyone who attends it.

Her Excellency Kaellyn's game plan included the "no CiT's at
Pennsic".

After careful consideration we have reconsidered and feel that there
is no reason that (providing they are properly supervised) CiT's
cannot participate in the learning & experience-rich Pennsic
environment.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please dont
hesitate to drop me a line.

Subject: FYI: background checks and the Chirurgeonate
baronesstsivia

As most of you have caught on the e-list, there has been quite a buzz
about the BoD's intended hiring of an outside-source to do background
checks on those SCA individuals who have to work with youth in certain
circumstances (AND I do mean "CERTAIN"!).

This has also caused quite a buzz with the SCA's chirurgeonate, and I
would like to thank my colleague who is Northshield's Kingdom
Chirurgeon for this post.

So worry not: it's not anything that will drectly impact the
Chirurgeons unless *WE* in Ealdormere choose it to be, and I for one
do not believe background checks would benefit the Chirurgeonate in
ANY way.
TSivia

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
It doesn't effect the Chirurgeonate as per Society President from my
conversation with him less than 24 hrs ago. Unless the Kingdom wishes
to make it so. ie Kingdoms may bring into effect more strict
enforcement for a higher level of regulation but not drop below
Society minimum requirements.

I was at Northshield Coronation this weekend and we had a Stallari
Meeting. The Society President is from Northshield and was invited to
attend out of Courtesy. We were discussing the related issues of the
arts martial, arts and sciences and chirugeonate on how it touches
upon youth activities. Though the BOD is still ironing out policy the
gist of it is specifically only Youth Only Activities will be touched
upon. ie Ministers of Youth Activities In the case where an activity
touches upon youths it is not considered to be the same liability.

For those of you who aren't going to Lady Mary and who have any
excuse at all to sojourn up (down?) to Caldrithig, a reminder:

Saturday May 12, 6 to 11 pm, Room 509 Arts Building (U of Ottawa: 70
Laurier St. E.), there will be a gala party (well ok: maybe not
quite "GALA") with food and non-alcoholic beverages, to celebrate
TSivia's (reluctant) 50th Birthday Party (as seen in the
TIDINGS!!...grin).

It is a NON SCA function, non official, no background checks
<<WEG>>, no site fee. Expect a very eclectic mix of people (from
academe, paganism, SCA, science fiction, and "just plain folks").
There will be munchies all evening (including vegetarian), and in
particular:

ALL musicians/bards/troubadours are invited to bring songs,
instruments, etc. etc. and set up a jam session!!

If you don't know the area, 70 Laurier St. E. is just off the
Queensway (Hwy 417) just at the Nicholas exit. There is a little
catch-as-catch can parking ON Laurier as well as on side streets and
pay-parking in the lot right behind the building on campus. Any bus
that stops at the Laurier transit stop will let you off right at the
building.

RSVP's are appreciated off-list so TSivia can be sure there's enough
grub. Gifts not required: your presence is gift enough!

The Directors and Corporate Staff would like to inform the
membership of
the SCA that the SCA, Inc. has been named in two civil suits based on
alleged sexual misconduct of an adult toward minors. Unfortunately,
the
individual accused of the misconduct was a member of the SCA. The
SCA
clearly did not sanction the alleged misconduct, had no prior
knowledge
of the misconduct, and had never received any complaints concerning
the
adult involved prior to his arrest. The adult involved has since
been
subject to absolute banishment from the SCA.

The suits originated in Pennsylvania, USA, and were served on the
SCA in
March of 2007. Complete information regarding the suits is not yet
known. As we are able, we will continue to update our membership.

Well it's almost here:

Balloons are being inflated, food is ordered, drinks are being
picked up, streamers and silly stuff (bubble wand bottles!) are in
the car.

If you're not going to Lady Mary and you would like to do something
on Saturday evening, TSivia's 50th birthday party is ready to go!

6 to 11 pm, room 509 Arts
University of Ottawa
70 Laurier St. E.
Ottawa

Feel free to drop by if you're in town, as there will be merriment,
silliness, and great food <LOTS OF IT!>. There's even a separate
birthday cake for all the OTHER Taurus babies in the group.

Musicians/bards, BRING your voices and instruments.

NO gifts are expected other than yourselves. IF you are desperate to
give something, there WILL be a box for donations which will be
split between the Ottawa Rape Crisis Centre, and the University of
Ottawa's Aboriginal Student Centre.

Come one, come all! No garb, just comfy informal duds.

(Hope to see some of you there!!)
Your ever-loving Kingdom Chirurgeon, TSivia!

Greetings all, from TSivia!

My apologies for the lateness of this announcement but as most of
you know, my mundane life trumped my SCA activity for the last
couple of months and so this missed the Tidings.

The Second Annual Chirurgeon's Picnic will be held on the Saturday
of War of the Trilliums this weekend coming, noon to 2 pm. (The
location will be well marked, not yet decided upon) It's a pot luck
thing, so please do bring some food to share with others. I will
supply napkins, plates, etc. etc.

This is a chance for Ealdormere's chirurgeons (and any visitors if
we have them) to meet and catch up, get to know each other a little
better, along with a chance for anyone interested in chirurgeoning
(AND/or waterbearing) to drop by and ask questions. Last year was
great fun, and my deputy Fursto did a very enlightening talk on how
the 9-1-1 system works from the dispatcher's point of view! You
don't need to stay there all through the picnic: swoop by, say hi,
grab some munchies, and continue on to whatever else you're doing!

**Also: if anyone has a shade-awning or other space we could borrow
for those two hours, we'd be grateful. (Last year Lady Ceara
graciously offered us the shade of her kitchen tent, for which I am
still VERY appreciative!!)**

Bring a chair or a blanket, and come enjoy a little social time with
Ealdormere's chirurgeons THIS SATURDAY from noon to 2 pm at War of
the Trilliums!

In service,

As I understand it, the EMS crew will do the initial assessment and
then send any boo-boos back to the chirurgeons to handle.

I need to send my authorized chirurgeon list to Justin ASAP so if you
have anything to add before I send this off (e.g. updating your certs)

Thanks folks. I won't be there with you this year either..so have a

When you go to the link it words it a bit differently:

"Per SCA policies, Chirurgeons provide care up to advanced first aid. More serious conditions are diagnosed and treated by the on-site EMS professionals. Ambulance transport is available on an as-needed basis. A list of off-site medical, dental, pharmacy, and mental health facilities will be available at the First Aid Point so that Pennsic attendees may arrange for treatment of illnesses such as sore throat or flu."

The wording does make it sound like they send people to the Chirurgeons first. It says more serious conditions are diagnosed and treated by EMS.  Either way, the Chirurgeons still get to do our thing. Whether EMS does the initial assessment or we do is of no consequence to me.

Interesting. I'd appreciate someone reporting back to me as to how this
actually DOES shake down this year.

The main diff. I see is that it's now the "First Aid Point" and no longer
Chi's point. Ah well...different label, same ole same ole (I hope).

Enjoy War!

As much as some may want to support our their political approach to this hot topic, the bottom line is that the priority for care has to focus on the individual attendee.

Paramedics don't like being called "ambulance drivers" for example, but they will still take someone to the hospital who calls them an ambulance driver.

I agree that if people are being cared for appropriately, it doesn't matter who triages or what the name of the post is called. They'll let us take care of what is within our boundary of practice. I'm sure the EMS guys don't want to be washing blisters all Pennsic.
(mind you, I don't know if *I* want to be washing blisters all of Pennsic either!! laugh)

FYI: the switch in dates for Pennsic means that this year neither my
deputy, Fursto, nor myself can attend. <SIGH>

As a result I have asked Viscountess Kaellyn to be Ealdormere's "go
to" person in case of problems or confusion, and she has agreed.

IF you haven't met her yet, you should. She's one of Ealdormere's
gems. You will be able to find her at the first aid point during most
of War if I know her....<WEG> If you've got questions about how the
Point is being run this year, talk to her OR MASTER JUSTIN (who is the
CIC this year for War). If you have a more Ealdormerean Chirurgeon
query, talk to Kaellyn.

And have a safe, FUN War!

Greetings to all from TSivia!

I"m pleased to report that with the permission of TRM's Trumbrand and
Kayla, I was able to announce the elevation of Lady Lerthan to full
chirurgeon status, *AND* to announce the elevation of Baroness
Xristina to Mentor Chirurgeon during Feast, at Feast of the Hare.

As well, THL Kersteken presented the Chirurgeonate with both a brand
new RED and white (not pink!) field AND court, banner!! The court
banner comes attached to a very impressive wooden banner-pole as well.
The court banner is velvet, the field one is synthetic so it can
weather the Pennsic weather with minimal damage. This of course
saddened HRM Kayla a touch, as she is of course very FOND of the
colour Pink.

The ancient and honourable banner we've been flying for all this time
(faded, worn, you can almost read through some of the fabric!) will be
retired honourably and kept for historical purposes.

Ealdormere chirurgeons, welcome both Lerthan and Xristina ("Ninka") to
their new coloured "racing stripe" statuses!

I have also received an inquiry about what is expected of a Kingdom
Chirurgeon in Ealdormere with an eye to starting the search for my
successor in spring. IF you are at all interested in the job, feel
free to contact me and discuss the post and its duties! I'd like to
have my successor ready to take over by the fall of 08.

All best!

For all who volunteer at Pennsic, Gulf Wars, Lillies, Estrella or
other American events, our work is covered under the U.S. federal
Volunteer Protection Act of 1997. here's a summary of the important
stuff related to Chirurgeons, from Mistress Katrei, Society
Chirurgeon.
TSivia

1- It limits lawsuits against volunteers serving nonprofit
public and private organizations and governmental agencies.
2- It protects the volunteer against claims of negligence.
It does NOT protect the volunteer against claims of gross
negligence, willful or criminal misconduct, reckless misconduct or
conscious, flagrant indifference to the rights or safety of the
individual harmed.
3- Action and inaction are both covered in the Act.
4- Individual states may impose additional conditions on the
provisions of the Act, including additional training. Individual
states may also provide that there is no limitation of liability.
5- The Act does not prevent lawsuits.
6- The Act does NOT protect the organizations, only those
volunteering for the organizations.

Hi folks!

As I have now started the formal process of finding someone to take
over this position by Pennsic, here are my thoughts on what the job
of being Ealdormere's Kingdom Chirurgeon entails. Feel free to ask
any additional questions you might have, and feel free to drop me an
application with:
1) SCA certification (e.g. level in the Guild, also are you a paid up
member, etc, years in the SCA and years in the Chirurgeonate at ANY
level)
2) mundane first aid background
3) admin background if any (incl. for any other clubs, etc. etc.)
4) any ideas you might have for the position
5) why you'd like to do the job.

Hoping to have to MAKE A CHOICE and have LOTS of good applications
from many of you!
Cheers!
TSivia

The most frustrating part of the job is paper-pushing (EUUUUW):
keeping a
record of whose certs are expired or not (that's three sets: FIRST
AID,
CPR, and SCA membership). That's the down part. I believe there
are one
or two computer systems out there that will track those dates for
you and
"ping" you when someone needs to be emailed about "you are about to
expire" type of stuff. I'm a little more old-fashioned <and a
little
more flexible>. If I've VISUALLY SEEN someone's cards, I will wait
for them
to get copies into me but will put them on my roster asap. If I've
seen
them and their expiry dates are not for some time I feel comfortable
that
they'll get copies scanned, photocopy, whatever, into me before
then. IF
THEY don't I email them and drop them to "inactive" till the
paperwork
comes in.

The 'up' parts: you get to be a sort of "cheerleader" for the
Chirurgeonate
in the Kingdom (or at least that's how I view it)...encourage folks
to
work with us (they're covered under the SCA insurance that way), and
keep
encouraging the troops who have decided to chirurgeon with us. Keep
an
eye on their reports coming in from any given event (there is
SUPPOSED to
be a report sent in from EVERY event, and if there was no Chi in
Charge,
then the autocrat's supposed to send one in. NEVER managed to get
ANYONE
to do that however...!).

The GOOD stuff is watching c.i.t. (formerly "apprentice") evals from
events and being able to make CIT's full chirurgeons. Occasionally
you get the REALLY fun stuff of moving a chirurgeon to Mentor.

I've managed to get us from 4 warranted chirurgeons to about 28 or
so in
the 2 yrs I've been here, plus getting both Baroness Xristina and
Maria-Katharina to offer at-cost training <not a lot of groups have
taken
ADVANTAGE of that, but hell...it's THERE!> for our folks. Kersketen
sewed
up lovely new banners for the office (the old one was threadbare and
PINK): one for the field (polyester..so it won't run in the rain)
and a
nice cushy one for court use as well.

So we've even got a tiny weeny bit of "bling" for the office. And
the Kingdom is having new shiny collars of office made by Mistress
AElfwyn, so there'll be new bling to wear too. (Chuckling)

The current Society Chi is an old friend of mine: Mistress Katrei is
completely
prepared to be the new broom sweeping a LOT of old deadfall out of
the
office (BoD approved)...old chirurgeons who didn't renew their certs
in
decades but keep pontificatting on Kingdom lists, badly trained old
chirurgeons, etc. etc. She's not afraid of painting a target on her
back
and I think the entire office will be much better off in the long
run due
to her actions. (There are a few folks who are well overdue for being
turfed out of the position!)

I view upping the profile of the Office as one of my important jobs
in the
last few years. The chirurgeonate overall has had a BAD
reputation...a
smal part unfortunately earned (Keeping a leash on "rescue rickies",
or
turfing them out completely), but the largest part due to very very
very
old PR (from the "we don't need no stinkin' chirurgeons" era). I've
viewed
my job as making sure both our membership AND the SCA in Ealdormere,
recognize that we ONLY work at the first-aid level. Most of the
folks in
the corps in Ealdormere have HIGHER trained levels (duella, midwife,
EMT/Paramedics, RNs, etc. etc.). But with that baldric on, they are
ONLY working to first aid levels. When their additional level of
expertise is called for they can just drop off the baldric and move
to their mundane certs-level.

I envision the SCA's chirurgeonate as Boo-Boo kissers: the coach at
any
amateur league sport with the tensor bandages, ice packs, and band-
aids,
NOTHING More. We had a fatality at Estrella this month: the folks
who
engaged and worked on him till the ambulance showed up were the
PROFESSIONAL EMTs we hire and keep on site. (he was gone by the time
his
head hit the ground apparently: probably a massive heart attack from
what
I've heard. I was at Point when the call came in so I wasn't directly
engaged in the efforts.)

So: being Kingdom Chi is about watching paperwork and encouraging
those
who are properly certified and willing to put in a little boo-boo
kissing
time at events, to do so.

PLEASE ask if you see something I may have forgotten here. It's
really not
that complicated a task, in all honesty. I *may* spend 10 hrs a
month at
this, including writing up Chirurgeon letters for the Tidings
(including
research when it's called for, like the embolism article I wrote for
Jolecia after Sarnac died). I don't carry a kit into events that
often
<it's ALWAYS in my car> because I"m adamant that the Kingdom CHI is
NOT
the default chirurgeon at every darn event. <smile>

Oh yeah...and you become a member of the Privy Council of the
Kingdom so you'll be expected to attend approx. 1-hr
meetings ...hmmmm: x4/year unless there's something horribly wrong
going on in-Kingdom. You can also send your deputy to the meetings
for you.

1- It limits lawsuits against volunteers serving nonprofit public

T'sivia,

Known for my abilities to get the job done right, it is my pleasure to submit my mundane/SCA resume for the Kingdom Chirurgeon position .

Organization and Communication have been key in all of my previous employment positions, and is imperative in my roll as a Volunteer Fire-fighter with the Grand Valley and District Fire Department.

I left the United States to make Canada my new home in April 2004, and started work immediately at Strand Lighting.  After almost two years with Strand Lighting they closed their Canadian offices and moved all operations to California, USA.  I have established a home for my family and have become rooted in my new community of Grand Valley.  I have always "played" with Ealdormere, and now have the opportunity to contribute more to my new Kingdom.

I am confident I would bring with me a package of skills and experience that will provide us with an invaluable resource.  Having acquired the required certificates plus extra training  for this position, I feel I would be a benefit to the organization.

I would be honoured to become a member of the team, and am available for a phone interview at your convenience.   I appreciate your time, and look forward to personally discussing with you how my abilities can best serve our needs.

It would never be proper to expect someone to give personal information to a list.  If, as I suspect, Ealdomere works like other Kingdoms, the usual way to apply would be to send a resume to the Kingdom Chirurgeon and the Kingdom Seneschal (Or the Crown, or Both).

The yahoo group isn't actually the appropriate place to post this: I have
taken his information and it's in the list of those applying for the

All applications can be sent to me privately. I will then collate them,
review them, and ultimately bring my recommendation to the Privy Council.

As shown my personal information is out there, I've never been one to worry to much about it.
my resume has been "out there" for a long time and I'm sure all the personal information given isn't already out there somewhere anyway.

In the society, My name is Drake Abernan,
And if you "play" in Ealdormere, You'll probably just know me as the guy who moved up here from the East Kingdom who is part of Timberwolfe and GodWeisel.
My Knight is Syr Gunter, (whom has moved to South Carolina).
I was friends with Sarnac when he lived in New Jersey, and due to many extenuating circumstances has come to live and play in this part of the world.
I'd be more than happy to have a few beers with anyone who would actally like to know more.
or if you'd like to contact me "off line" or privately, let me know.

YIS,
Drake Abernan
