Hi everyone,
How is everyone doing? This is Piseth Chim President of Drexel's Ballroom
Dancing. I would like to thank everyone for attending the first Drexel
Ballroom Dancing lesson last week. It was a great success. I hope everyone had
a lot of fun and will continue to come to the rest of the lessons this term
every wednesday from 8-9pm in the gym.
We have two professional latin dance instructors for this term. Every other
week a different instuctor will be teaching you guys. One instuctor is a guy
and the other is the girl that you met last week. The instructors will be
teaching a lot of different latin dances throughout this term. Guaranteed to
be a lot of fun and great workout.
Staring tomorrow we will be collecting the $20 fee for the dance lessons this
term. Sorry for the fee but the club is spending alot of money on these great
dance instructors this year. Your money will be well worth it.
If any of you are interested on being on the dance team this year, we will be
holding try outs soon. Just come in and sign up tomorrow at the lessons. The
dance team does events on campus and goes to competitions off campus.
I'll see you all tomorrow
Piseth
President
Hi everyone!
This week has been very exciting, as we have conquered all the necessary red
tape, and are proud to offer you one of the best Latin couples in the area.
We have hired Inna & Sergei to teach the club this semester, and they will
most likely alternate from time to time, so you will get to experience them
both. This couple have been involved with universities for a long time, and
they do an amazing job of teaching newcomers how to move on the dancefloor.
We are starting all our dances from square one, so no experience is necessary.
* Location: Drexel gym, large activity room downstairs.
* Time: Wednesday 8-9pm
* Cost: Free trial first week, then $20 for the entire term.
* No partner necessary, no experience necessary.
Please come and join us for a hot night of Latin dancing!
Guys are especially encouraged to come and lead our wonderful girls.
....great way to meet people....
See you all on Wednesday!
Jake
Hi everyone!
I would just like to thank all of you who joined us for our first lesson of
the term tonight (10/2/02).
We apologize that tonight's lesson was a little "dry", but we hope to see you
all again next week when we have our wonderful instructor and music in place.
The basic steps we covered tonight give you a good foundation to build your
latin dances from. Remember that the quick-quick-slow tempo and the weight
transfer from foot to foot can be used in almost all the latin dances you will
learn.
The steps we covered tonight were as follows:
* Basic step (forward and back, plus side)
* Crossover break ("New Yorkers")
* Hand to hand
* Spot turn
Remember to step toes first, and don't look at your feet!
A little bit of practice makes it much easier to remember, and you will be
able to learn a lot more next week.
If you didn't make it to this week's lesson, there is no need to worry. Next
week will also be free of charge, and we will be starting our dances from
scratch.
Guys are particularly strongly encouraged to come, since we have a large
selection of wonderful girls for you to dance with.
It was great to see so many of you there, and I hope to get to know you all
better in the future.
Take care, and happy dancing,
Jake
Hi Everyone!
This week we are starting up again with our weekly lessons.
Lessons will be held downstairs in the Gym from 8-9 every Wednesday.
This year we have a professional instructor, and we are extremely excited to
offer you one of the best Latin dancers in the area. Our new teacher has
competed professionally for many years, and he has placed high in competitions
all over the world. This past year he competed in the ultimate ballroom
dancing event - the Blackpool competition in England. He placed among the top
20 of the new couples, an accomplishment few can put on their record.
Here's the new layout:
First lesson on Wednesday October 2nd from 8-9pm.
Everyone is welcome, no experience and no partner necessary.
First lesson free, then $20 for the entire term.
We give you a total of 7 lessons for a total of $20 - you won't find a better
deal anywhere!
This is an amazing opportunity to observe and learn how dancing is supposed to
be done, and at the same time have some fun and socialize with fellow
students.
Hope to see you all there!
Jake - Team Captain
This message was sent earlier, then returned from the Drexel Server.
We try again...
Hi Everyone!
Welcome back to a new and exciting term filled with plenty of ballroom dancing
opportunities.
Soon you will receive info on the Drexel Ballroom Club's agenda for the fall
term, but for those interested in more dancing experience there are some
wonderful opportunities at Penn for you to take advantage of.
Penn has already started their program, but it is not too late to join. They
leave their lessons open to everyone, and the fact of the matter is that Penn
students only make up about 60% of the weekly crowd. Attached, you will find
more info on the Penn lessons.
Don't be shy, try it out, and make sure you come to our own lessons when we
start up in about a week's time.
Hope to see you all on the dance floor.

Hi Everyone!
This week will be our last week of ballroom lessons this term.
The program will be the same as the last two weeks:
8-9p - American Foxtrot
9-10p- American Waltz
Location: Large activity room, downstairs in gym
Cost: free
We hope to see many of you there, and we have a couple of nice moves left to
teach you before summer.
Happy dancing, and good luck on all your finals!
Piseth and Jake
Hi Everyone!
There's only two more lessons before we take a summer break, so make sure you
don't let the opportunity slip by.
The summer is a big time for weddings and we're teaching two of the most
common wedding-dances right now! We'll show you how to impress the other
guests.
Here's what's happening:
Wednesday 5/22/02
8-9pm - Foxtrot frenzy
9-10pm- Waltz extravaganza
Location: Large activity room downstairs in gym
Free of charge!
So come on down for a nice, relaxing, fun time - you still have time to learn
the essentials before summer.
Happy dancing!
Jumpin' Jake
Hi Everyone!
Thanks to everyone who joined us last week for the conclusion of Cha-Cha and
Mambo. It's really quite amazing to see all the steps you have learned
already! Great job everyone!
This week we are starting new dances, and we hope to see you there.
The program is as follows:
Wednesday 5/15/02
8-9p - American Foxtrot
9-10p- American Waltz
Location: Large mirrored room downstairs in gym
Cost: free
As you can see, we are finishing off the semester with some of the classics.
Both foxtrot and waltz are slow dances that belong in the standard ballroom
category, or in the "smooth" category which it is called in American style.
These dances are played quite frequently at balls, and are good to know for
weddings and other fancy occasions.
This will be the first week of both dances, so we are starting completely from
scratch.
Hope to see you there,
Jake
Hi Everyone!
This week is an exciting one, as we will have our team tryouts.
The Drexel Ballroom Dancing Team travels to competitions here on the east
coast, and provides an opportunity to really take your ballroom dancing to
another level. We also perform at school events, and we teach at different
occasions here at Drexel.
As a team member you will be asked to commit more time to dancing than just
the casual group lessons, but it is largely up to each individual how much you
wish to practice. There is no fee to join the team at the moment, and you do
not need a partner.
The schedule is as follows:
Location: Small activity room downstairs in the gym.
Time: 9pm, Tuesday May 7th, 2002
Please DO NOT wear long skirts/dresses or very baggy pants as we need to see
your legs.
Normal pants, shorts, and above the knee skirts are all acceptable.
It will most likely get warm, so make sure you're wearing something
comfortable that you can move in.
You will not be committing to anything simply by attending the tryouts, so we
strongly encourage everyone who is even remotely interested to show up. You
can ask questions, and learn more about the things we do.
Hope to see you on Tuesday,
Jake
Hi Everyone!
Tonight we will continue our Latin extravaganza.
Thank you to all that showed up last week, we had a pretty good crowd, and it
was a lot of fun. If you didn't make it last week, there is no need to
despair. We will review everything we went over last week, and it is
definitely possible to catch up!
The program is as follows:
8-9p - The crazy cha-cha
9-10p- Mambo madness
As always: downstairs in the gym, free of charge.
Both dances are fast an fun, so if you need a little break from the midterm
chaos, please check us out.
Also: For those interested in taking your dancing to a higher level, we will
begin "scouting" for potential team members this week. Next week we will have
auditions for everyone who is interested in joining the ballroom team. More
info on this will be sent out shortly.
See you all tonight!
Jake and JenJen
Hi Everyone!
I'm terribly sorry about this late notice, but we've had some organizational
problems this week.
Today, as well as every Friday, there will be a social dance at the Stardust
ballroom in Pennsauken, New Jersey. We have mentioned this a couple of times,
and some of you have already expressed interest.
The event follows a similar pattern every week:
8pm: Doors open, social dancing begins
Somewhere around 10pm: Group lesson, then social dancing again
12am: Doors close.
Buffet dinner is served throughout the night.
Music includes everything within the realm of ballroom dancing (i.e.
Mambo/Salsa, Rumba, Cha Cha, Samba, Merengue, Jive, Swing, Waltz, Foxtrot,
Tango, Quickstep, + some surprise music).
Cost: $5 with student ID, $10 without.
This is a really great opportunity to practice the dances you have learned,
and maybe learn some new ones. It's also a lot of fun, and you meet new
people.
The problem we're having this week is transportation.
We really need to know who wants to go, and how many cars we have.
If you're interested, please send an email to: Ballroom_Dancing@...
Include:
Your name, how many people you are bringing (and if they need rides), phone
number where you can be reached today.
If you're driving: How many extra people you have room for.
If you need a ride: let us know.
We'll be leaving campus at 7:30, so please let us know if you cannot make that
time. Driving time: approximately 30 minutes.
Here's the website for directions:

Hope to see you there,
Jake
Hi Everyone!
Thank you for a great lesson on Wednesday. I know some of you were new at
this, but you all did a really good job.
Last week's lesson concluded the lessons in Rumba and Tango, and we will be
starting new dances this week.
This week's program will be as follows:
8-9p - American Cha-Cha
9-10p- American Mambo
Location: Downstairs in Gym (same as before)
Cost: Free
The Cha-Cha is a great latin dance that shares common traits with all the
other latin dances. It is quite similar to the Rumba, but it's faster and has
great music and rhythm.
The Mambo is the ballroom dance from which salsa was created. It is very
similar to the salsa, and a lot of fun to dance. Mambo offers great music and
great moves that allow for lots of fun in crowded places or open spaces.
So, loosen you hips, strengthen your abs, and get ready for a fun-filled latin
workout.
See you all Wednesday night,
Jake & JenJen
Hi everyone!
Thank you for a great lesson last Wednesday. We had a pretty good turnout, and
we were able to cover quite a bit of material. Believe it or not, you are
about half-way to knowing the entire bronze syllabus already!
This week there are a couple of opportunities for you to take advantage of
right here on campus.
First, on Tuesday there will be a dance workshop/group lesson in the Myers
Hall tutor lounge from 5:30-8:00. This is a one-time event as part of
international week which is held this week. We plan to teach salsa and swing,
but we are open to suggestions, and will teach whatever the masses desire.
Again, no partner or experience is necessary to join us.
Second, our Wednesday lessons continue as usual. This will be the last week of
rumba and tango, so make sure you come to practice all the steps again. We
will add a little bit more, but we want to make sure that everyone has a
chance to learn the steps completely.
As always:
Time: 8-10
Location: Downstairs in the gym
To see the complete calendar of lessons and events, go to:

(- then follow the links on the left of your screen)
Finally, for those who dare:
Every Friday Stardust Ballroom in NJ hosts a social dance. This is one of the
biggest and best ballrooms in the area, and they have great music and sound.
The price is only $5 with a student ID ($10 without), and this includes a
buffet dinner, and a lesson. It is a great deal, and there are tons of
beginner dancers there. Time: 8-midnight.
Usually, there are quite a few students there from other schools, and you will
be hard-pressed to find a better place to practice what you have learned.
We will announce this on Wednesday as well, but if anyone is interested, or
has any questions, please don't hesitate to email us at:
Ballroom_Dancing@...
See you all dancing,
Jake
Hi everyone!
For those of you who came last time, I hope you enjoyed it. We only had a few
people, so we were able to cover quite a bit.
We will start from scratch again this week, and we hope everyone will come
this time, both the Tango and the Rumba are great dances and a lot of fun to
dance.
The program is the same:
8-9p - Newcomer American Rumba
9-10p- Newcomer American Tango
No charge!
These are the steps we hope to cover (for review/practice purposes):
(Don't worry, we'll go at a comfortable pace, we might not be able to cover
all of these)
Rumba:
Basic box step, underarm turn, outside breaks, back breaks, spot turn,
progressive walks, cross-body-lead.
Tango:
Basic/outside basic, promenade basic, promenade to fan, rocks, corte.
That's all for now.
See you on Wednesday!
Best regards,
Jake, team captain.
Hi Everyone!
This is just a little reminder that tonight is the first practice this term.
Practice will be held in the large mirrored room downstairs in the gym.
Program:
8-9 American Rumba
9-10 American Tango
Tell your friends, and come out for a great time!
Best regards,
Jake and JenJen
Hi Everyone!
This Wednesday will be the first day of lessons in the Spring term,
isn't it exciting?!
We have some great dances planned for you this term, and we hope to
see as many as possible there to experience the joys of Ballroom
Dancing.
The program for Wednesday will be as follows:
8-9 American Rumba
9-10 American Tango
Location: Downstairs in the Drexel Gym, the large mirrored room
behind the fitness center.
Cost: Free!
The Rumba is a nice, slow, romantic, latin dance. It can be danced to
a lot of different songs, and is a great starting point for latin
dancers.
The Tango is one of the superstars of the Ballroom, it has been
featured in many movies, and it is known for its staccato movement,
and for its many cool moves. You probably won't be Al Pacino after
one lesson, but after three...who knows?
No experience is necessary, no partner is necessary, no sense of
rhythm, music, or direction is necessary either. In short; we really
don't require anything, we just want you to come out and have some
fun!
As you probably can imagine, it takes more than one lesson to learn a
dance, so we will keep teaching these two dances for three weeks
before we switch dances. We'll try to cover all the basic steps, and
see how it goes. What this means, however, is that we have to
progress a little bit from week to week, so it really pays off to
come regularly. Don't be discouraged by this, the pace will most
definitely be comfortable for newcomers.
During this term, we will look for dancers to recruit to our ballroom
dancing team, which travels to competitions here on the east coast.
If you are interested in joining the team, you should try to attend
practice every week, as we are mostly looking for commitment when we
select new members.
If you have any questions whatsoever, please don't hesitate to ask.
Our email address is: Ballroom_Dancing@...
Tell your friends about us, and we hope to see you all on Wednesday
night!
Best regards,
Jake and JenJen
Greetings, fellow dancers!
Here is a great opportunity to get a head start on the upcoming term.
Tonight Penn is having their annual semi-formal dance, and it is open
to Drexel students as well.
Location: ARCH auditorium, 36th and Locust.
Time: 8pm - Midnight, with free beginner lesson at 7:30.
Cost: $5 with student ID (including Drexel ID), $8 for general public
(includes appetizers, water, etc.)
Dress: Semi-formal (NO JEANS, NO SNEAKERS)
There will be a couple of performances by the Penn team featuring one
couple from the Drexel team!
Worried you don't know enough steps, bla, bla, bla?
I repeat: free beginner lesson at 7:30. If you attend that one,
you'll have just as much experience as many of the others there.
So if your feet are itching after an entire term without ballroom,
come tonight, and get back in the game!
Sincerely,
Ballroom Jake
