SCHOOL BUS SAFETY ACT
On December 1, 2009, the Nicholas Adkins School Bus Safety Act will take effect in North Carolina. This act, signed into law by Governor Beverly Perdue in June, increases the penalty for those who strike and kill a child when they pass a stopped school bus. The new law is named for Nicholas Adkins, 16, of Stoneville, a student at McMichael High School in Mayodan. Adkins was killed in January when a driver did not stop for a school bus that had stopped and extended its stop arm. The Nicholas Adkins School Bus Safety Act adds two major provisions to existing law:
·School districts will be authorized to mount cameras on their stop arms. Pictures from the cameras would be admissible as evidence in court.
·Killing someone after running a school bus stop sign will now be a Class H felony, meaning that courts are more likely to assign jail time for such incidents.

STRINGS PROGRAM IN NEED OF CELLOS
It's a good problem to have – the DDMS Strings Program is very popular! However, strings teacher, Ms. Palma Steumpfle is in need of two or more cellos to accommodate students. Cellos and basses are large instruments that cannot be transported on buses and therefore students need to have one at home – usually a rental – and one at school. When there are more students than instruments, they must share an instrument at school. With budget cuts in the WCPSS, there is no money to purchase instruments. Perhaps you have an old cello at home or know someone who might?
Perhaps you would like to make a donation to our cause? If you can help in any way, please contact Ms. Steumpfle: pstuempfle@... .

FLU SHOTS TODAY
Schools across Wake County will be sponsoring flu shot clinics during the months of October and November for all students in grades K-12. A clinic at Athens Drive will be held TODAY, October 14, from 3:30 to 7:30 PM. Studentsmay get the shot at any of the clinics--they are not required to get the shot at the school they attend. For more information, including a list of all of the scheduled clinics, visit the WCPSS website:
Join us for the first school dance of the year, this Friday, October 16th from 7-9pm. Tickets are on sale this week during lunch for $3, no tickets will be available at the door. Students must follow the WCPSS dress code (same policies that apply during school) and may NOT attend if they have 2 In-School Suspensions or 1 Out-of-school Suspension. Please have all rides at school no later than 8:50pm. Questions: Michelle Smith, msmith19@... . 8th GRADERS AND CFNC
Attention 8th grade parents: Beginning Monday, Oct. 12th through the first week in November, all 8th graders will be working with Mrs. Warren, 8th grade school counselor, and Ms. Lowrance, Career Development Coordinator at DDMS, to sign up for a FREE College Foundation of North Carolina (CFNC) student account. This free online resource is a wonderful tool for students, to encourage the important process of thinking and planning for life after middle school. We will be working with the 8th graders this school year, in utilizing some components of this resource here at school. We would like to encourage you to view and utilize this free tool with your child outside of school as well. Please feel free to contact your child's school counselor, Mrs. Warren, at 233-4228 or jwarren@...if you have any questions and once again, thank you for your continued support!
Steumpfle: pstuempfle@... .

MIDDLE CREEK BAND INFO
Mr. Enloe, Middle Creek HS band teacher is inviting all 8th grade band members to play with the high school band on Oct 30 at a home football game. This is a great opportunity for 8th graders to get a feel for the marching band. Band students will be sent the music to be performed. Star Spangled Banner, Our fight Song, and pep songs from the Yellow and Black Mike Story book. Please let me know who will be coming. Our athletic club has asked that we limit free access to the stadium so... parents, brothers and sisters will have to go in the main entrance and pay. If your school is bringing the band, then one adult per student as a chaperon will be admitted per Wake County school policy. Mr. Enloe will be sending out the music soon. If your 8th grade band student is interested in attending, please e-mail me their name, instrument, phone number and parent email. Thank you. Carol Beaver: caroldoug@... .

You may access additional fundraising information and a donation card on our DDMS website at www.dillarddrivemiddle.com and print off a brochure to send in with your donation. Procedures after school are as follows: After the bell rings at 3pm, students staying for the game will remain in their bus room until 3:15pm when they will be dismissed to the field/gym. This gives them time to get their ticket and stop by the concession stand before the game begins at 3:45pm.
Activity buses are available to take students home after the game and will load at 4:45pm and leave the school at 5pm. Please check over the after school activity bus routes below. If your stop is not there, you will need to make other arrangements for a ride home. Route 1: Sam's Club on South Saunders Street, South East Raleigh High School, Bugg Elementary School.
