"Nonviolent noncooperation with evil is a sacred duty." --M.K. Gandhi
This list derives from three words which have become my guiding lights in these darkening days of mindless war and Orwellian newspeak:
DHARMA--the eternal Truth, as manifested in every wisdom tradition on Earth, simultaneously as principle, precept and practice.
GAIA--the living Earth, understood as a self-organizing, complex adaptive system in which humanity is seen as a part of, rather than apart from, the natural world. The only living planet we will ever know, currently threatened by GLOMART, the Global Market Economy, which runs on a logic of maximization based on arithmetic (money): "More is always better; you are what you own; and the bottom line is the bottom line." Glomart is a cancerous outgrowth of western civilization, now global in scope, which is now consuming Gaia.
SATYAGRAHA--lit. "Firmly grasping the Truth." Mahatma Gandhi's luminous term for his political strategy of mindfully Speaking Truth to Power, and Nonviolent Noncooperation with Evil; a sacred tradition initiated by Lao Tzu, the Buddha, and the Hebrew Prophets, perfected by Jesus, and practiced by St. Francis, Guru Nanak, Thoreau, Gandhi, King, Mandela, Thich Nhat Hanh, the Dalai Lama, and Anh Saung Soo Kyi
So a short form of Dharma Gaia Satyagraha may be expressed by the following couplet:
"Do the right thing for the living Earth;
Grasp the Truth for all its worth."
The purpose of this list, then, is to open up a discussion of effective ways of simultaneously (1) transforming Glomart and thereby healing Gaia, and (2) practicing Satyagraha against the Bush regime and other toxic manifestations of Glomart.
