Hi.

I have a set of lunstix flower sticks. I want to get a devil stick.
i was looking around on the internet and found Dube trigon ($32),
dube's laser prism devil sticks ($30), and Todd Smith's devil sticks
($20). I am good with flower sticks and never tried devil sticks. i
was wondering which set you all would suggest. thanks for the help.

Everyone is talking about how much Dube sucks and is difficult to
manipulate, but no one has talked much about toddsmith apart from
Seth. I am in need of a new pair of sticks and I know how to use both
kinds ie: flower and devil (since I am not sure there is a proper
name for the non-flowered ones.) So, what does someone recommend for
someone like me, who, without sounding arrogant is
intermediate/borderline advanced? My Mysticks, as I noted in a
previous post, are down to one handstick, and I never paid for them
anyway, so I did not mind the tire factory smell especially since i
got a cool shirt with it as well. Ah, the joys of being a
demonstrator for Mysticks :-) Anyway, any help is much appreciated.

Hi Dan

The best time to hit the stick during a helicopter is when it's
perpendiculer to your handstick. Try to hit it every 1/2 flip for a start.
IF u find that it overspins (more than 1/2 a flip), don't hit it too high,
and similarly, if it underspins, hit it so it goes higher and has more time
to flip. :) Oh, and once u hit it, get your hand (and handstick) out of
the way coz they will collide if u don't.

Oh and one more thing, usually, b4 u start tapping the helicopter with one
handstick, the devilstick is not *totally* flat, so for the 1ST hit, hit it
slightly of centre to get it totally flat, and try to hit the subsequent
taps right at the centre.

Hope this helps! =)

Hi!

I personally don't really like the Dube trigon too much (though I got a
routine on it, but that's the only devilstick I got anyway), coz it's damn
heavy, and it has good grip only when the devilstick and handsticks are
clean and free from dust ----- if u drop your handsticks too much or get
some sweat on the stick, basically u'll be screwed (the thing will slide
like hell) until u got get some soap and wash the whole darn set.

Dan, maybe it'll help if u do the same for your sticks, perhaps they're too
dusty or something. Another devilstick I wouldn't recommend is the BEARD
devilsticks. They suck big time man....if u get hold of an oddballs stick, I
would recommend it......tried it out b4 and it works pretty good!!!

If u feel more comfortable with a devilstick and prefer getting a
flowerstick, I suggest the oddballs flowerstick, coz that's the stick that
got me started since the beginning. Reason being, it's a really really slow
stick, and has lots of resistance coz it's made of rubber.

Juz my 2 cents worth, guys! ;)

What you're describing is the helicopter tap. I know there are a
zillion names for different tricks, but it'll help if we all try to
use the same terminology, and www.devilstick.org is the closest thing
we have to a universal dictionary.

My notation would also be helpful, but no one seems to like it.
I'll plug it anyway. A helicopter is:

  Z: 1
  Y: -1

A helicopter tap is:

  Z: 0 n
  Y: 1 n

The most obvious difference is that a plain helicopter uses both
hands. You can (well, I can) also do a helicopter with one hand:

  Z: 2 n
  Y: -2 n

> I can get it going horizontal easily enough, but when I try to tap
> with one stick, it ends up getting caught up in my handstick,

Practice, practice, practice, and timing.

> Oh and when's the best time to hit it, is it when it is perpedicular
> or parallel to the handsticks?

Perpendicular. That keeps your hand and handstick from hitting the ends.

I made my first devil stick video clip. It's just a thumbroll
(a handstick flourish), but I figured I should start small.
Besides, I'll need someone else to hold the camera for the big
stuff, and everyone else is asleep.

Hey Seth..

Yeah, I was originally just going to buy those Trigon Sticks,
blindly, quickly, like I usually do about anything. Thank you for
the ton of great info, and that link. I will definately NOT buy the
Dube ones because I think alot of what I'm having difficulty with in
my flower sticks is that they're too damn heavy. Hell I'm not even
sure what brand they are. Second hand and all... So I'm pretty sure
I'll go for a lighter devil stick. Will look into it. Anyway, I'm
trying to get the helicopter down pat. I can get it going horizontal
easily enough, but when I try to tap with one stick, it ends up
getting caught up in my handstick, or I don't hit it dead on in the
centre and it flips off at an unheard of angle (: Also I think the
big tassles and padding is screwing that up a but. Any suggestions?
Oh and when's the best time to hit it, is it when it is perpedicular
or parallel to the handsticks? How-to's relate it to your body, but
that can be construded in either way.

Hope to hear from ya all soon eh (:

The style and quality of the sticks make a huge difference.  Experts
can compensate for less stable sticks, and often prefer less stability
in favor of speed and responsiveness, but beginners have a tougher
time with more agile sticks.

For people just starting out with devil sticks, I'd recommend trying a
heavy one, like Dube's.  Most flower sticks are easier to keep off the
ground than devil sticks, but they're especially easy if they have
heavy and floppy tassles.  (They add significant rolling resistance.)

Of flower sticks, I like Lunastix best.  Crystal Stix are also nice.
I haven't used them in a while, but I think they roll a bit easier,
but are more agile (due to the ends not being as floppy).  Aren't
Mystix the black ones that make your hands smell like a tire factory?

They're quite different.  Dube sticks are heavy (about 10oz).  My
first Todd Smith devil stick was extremely light (about 6oz), but I
think he's advertising 8oz now.

A six ounce stick would probably be too fast for a beginner.  I
started with a Dube Trigon, and the high stability was very nice, but
my hands did get tired faster.  Now I use a Mr Babbache stick (8oz).

Renegade sticks are a good weight, but they're fatter so they roll
easier (which is bad).

Infinite Illusions are similar to Todd Smith, but are a bit heavier.

Serious Juggling lists weights with their sticks, so you can check out
the range.

Ooh, the Todd Smith fire stick is only 8oz..  Time to switch brands.
The Dube fire stick is much too heavy.

Sure, P...pp...or even Neruda...j/k...my real name is Pablo Neruda
and I am a world-renown poet from Chile, and if you believe that I
have a bridge to sell you in London, it's starting to fall down. Ok
enough of that..my real name is Brian. As to your stick problem, I
was having a very difficult time trying to visualize that, so I
really do not know what to tell you. If you are still learning with
the flower sticks and not ready to graduate just get a real cheap
pair at Kaybee toystores, Toys R us, <I don't wanna grow up...> or
anyplace that sell them real cheap. This way you can get some grip
tape and wrap it up in that thereby making it very easy to do
tricks...that's the secret behind Mysticks. Or, as you said, you
could bite the bullet and get a good pair, aerodynamically weighted
and so durable they could withstand a hurricane, ok maybe I
exaggerate a bit, but they will cost you. Good Luck

Great to see ya interested in this forum, I love hearing other
people's thoughts on sticks. I think we've got a pretty good variety
of skill levels too. One thing I wanted to discuss with everybody is
the coating of the stick.. I have flower sticks and they're very nice

Ahhh, the joys of vicariously reliving the beginning stages through
someone else. Anyway, when you are on the ground make sure you are
hitting the sticks as though you were driving a car. In other words
force yourself to hit it in a "steering" motion. This way it will
give you the arc you need to tick tock in the air. Also, make sure
you try hit it as far up on the master stick as you can...stay away
from the middle since this actually slows the master stick down and
will prohibit the tick tock motion to occur. Once you have that you
are on your way to dropping and dropping and dropping some more. In
fact, in the Klutz book, teach yourself how to juggle, the first rule
was to take all three bags (bean bags) and drop them....great wisdom
from the people at Klutz :-)I suppose that could apply to devil
sticks as well

Like I said in the post from the other board, excellent idea. I guess
since there seems to be this introduction period going on, I feel I
too should introduce myself. I am 23 years old and live in Jersey
<yippee> been sticking for about 5 years with Mysticks. I know I
know, Mysticks, I was criticized on the other board for admitting to
that, but hey they sponsored me and gave me them for free, who could
complain about that deal. Anyway, I know a hell of a lot of things to
do with the sticks cause I used to spend hours on end everynight
under our streetlamp practicing. I lost my other hand stick for the
Mysticks so it might be time to invest in a pair, after I get a modem
that will keep me on for more than 20 minutes (hence the rushed post)
Anyway, I have tried fire sticks and those things kick ass, I came
damn near burning myself many times, but it was really cool. I have
finally learned how to stick with one stick with both hands and am
now looking for some really advanced moves, besides two sticks at a
time, still can't get that one. As I said though, the best way to
learn is to use the catches you try when dropping it, I made up some
cool moves that way. I think one of the coolest was bouncing it off
my foot back up or letting it fall into a stall and start spinning it
again. Anyway, if anyone has some things I could try drop me a post
sometime, would be cool to try some new things. However, right now I
only have one stick so I am kind of limited. That offer stands for me
too, anyone want to know some cool things to try, just ask, I am so
happy to finally see a group that I can relate to in the juggling
sense :-) ok I'm done rambling

Ti Eu..

Hey bud! I can completely relate with your last post.. I feel
myself always wanting to rush myself.. learn the tricks that wow
people, but I know that I have to feel 100% confident in the basics
before I even think of moving on to the toughies. I also have a
terrible time learning on both hands. I'm getting really good with
one stick manipulation, but only on my right hand. I'm forcing
myself to learn everything on the left hand as well, but it's a very
slow and painful process. I feel that I've reached the point that
any time now it will all just click. I'll get the basics down pat.
It's just the propeller that's giving me quite a bit of trouble. I
can tap it usually three or four times, and by that time it's just
too out of control. Yeah, everytime I pick up the sticks I spend a
good couple minutes just tick-tocking. It's a good warmup and gives
me a good feel for the sticks. Anyway, all this talk about them, I'm
just ithcing to give them a go! Talk to ya soon guys!

Heyo A.R!

Glad to see ya get in on the conversation. As for the question of
how to get the sticks off the ground.. I think the biggest thing to
keep in mind while you're hitting the master stick is not to hit it
to the other hand stick.. hit it up. Fully up. It will rotate
automatically to the other stick, but you need that lift everytime to
keep it in the air. A great tutorial for this is:

Hope that helps, and hope to hear from ya soon!

Ciao for now,
Dan

Greetings:
I'm glad to see this forum getting of the ground.
Now if I could just do the same with my sticks...
I can do a reasonable tick toc on the ground, but
when I try to lift the sticks, things fall apart
quickly, (and loudly). I'm using Klutz stick (hey,
they were five bucks).
Any thoughts on this transition to getting the
sticks in the air would be gratefully
appreciated...
Also, we might want to post a message about this
forum on the juggling list... and a link I haven't
seen mentioned yet...

Thanks...

Yo, Dan!

Man, I'm excited too! I wouldn't say I'm an expert at devilsticks, though I
know a couple of tricks. Still having trouble with a couple of tricks, esp.
when learning both sides!

Yeah, flowersticks are good for beginners and for workshops, but don't worry
about moving on to devilsticks to soon, they're soooo cool! My personal
advice, get a devilstick that is light. Man, that Dube devilstick still
turns me off very often.....

About the basics, yeah, they're *very* important, coz I don't believe I
could have become better without seriously spending sessions working on em
basics. For the normal tick tock, I spent one night while I was in my army
camp (we have to serve 2.5 years national service over here), while in bunk
alone, I spent almost 1/2 hour getting my basic tick tock really
comfortable, as in the cushioning and lifting part, and then 1/2
flips.....learning one side till it's really solid, then going on to the
other side......I truely believe that if I didn't do the above, I wouldn't
have gotten my constant 1/2 flips solid, even now, I fumble sometimes.
Getting your constant 1/2 flips wide can really project the impression that
the devilstick has some form of magnetic abilities, coz I have been asked a
couple of times by the public whether the stick is magnetic!

So much rambling on, I guess my point is -- u're rite, get the basics *real*
solis, and the advanced tricks will be much much easier. Don't rush!

Guess that's all for now......here from u soon, and hope more members join
in! =)

Cheers!
Ti Eu

hey Ti Eu!

Tnanks for your interest in the group.. I'm excited about discussing
this topic with somebody who is, from the sounds of it, quite the
expert in devil sticks. It's nice to hear that only after a year and
a bit, that you can create a solid routine, and choreograph to music
(by the way, I LOVE Trance). I'm looking forward to learning some
actual tricks, but first I will have to get the basics down.. which I
don't mind! I like my flower sticks, I get the impression they are
more of a beginner's tool.. slower, heavier. And if you can learn on
them, then you're laughing when you move to devilsticks.

Anyway, hope to hear from ya soon (:

Ciao,
Dan

Hiya!

I'm Ti Eu, from Singapore! I'm 21/m, and got my 1st flowerstick Jan '99.
It's great prop, and after becoming better at it, I decided to get a
devilstick coz the spin is faster and flashier, and the best part is that
single stick tapping of the helicopter can last *way* longer due to less
friction from each tap. It was a black and white Dube trigon, darn heavy,
and I promptly gave up when I 1st received it. I had the impression the size
and weight was for larger sized americans, but after a couple of months,
picked it up and tried again.....I guess I had become stronger or something,
coz slowly I got the hang of it......

Once I felt that I had enough tricks up and going, I purchased a Dube
firedevilstick, and subsequently developed a devilstick plus firedevilstick
routine choreographed to a piece of trance music. The 1st time I performed
this routine was at a stage performance for the Big Walk. It's an event
where a *LOT* of people all simultaneously do a couple of kilometres of
walking, the purpose of which is charity. I was pretty nervous and dropped
a few times (including the firestick, ag!), but it was fun! And HOT! Yeah,
in the burning sun at 10am in the morning, phew!!!

Anyway, I've decided to get a lighter devilstick with nice decoration on the
whole stick, probably oddballs, so I can do some serious freestyling when I
do mingling. Yeah, I do occasional mingling for events.....

Btw, I also do diabolos, ball, clubs, and passing too!

Dan, thanks for setting up this egroups, it'll make devilsticking much more
interesting!

Cheers!
Ti Eu

Hey there! The name's Dan and I live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
I'm 21/M. I picked up my flower sticks about a month ago at a garage
sale. Never seen anybody use them, but I knew of them.. and hey, for
$1 you just can't go wrong! They're in perfect condition, and I am
now addicted. I'd say I'm doing good for how much I've used them. I
can do a pretty good helicopter (by my standards anyway) and I'm
getting pretty good at one stick manipulation. Still don't have the
propeller down, but hey.. it takes time right? So anyway, I started
this forum to get some great conversation going about techniques,
tips, no matter how small... and experiences. I've got a few choice
questions and topics.. eg. Which is better.. Devil Sticks or Flower
Sticks? I know they both have their advantages and disadvantages.
But yeah, anyway.. hope to hear from ya all soon! (:
