I am tired of discussing what is wrong, and maybe

residents. My question is simple, what is the invisible
force that is holding us back from taken action

our community)? Has picket lines and sit-ins gone out
of fashion? If not sign me up for the next one that

Alaafia<br><br> I am a 22 y/o black gay student @
WC3. Since the age of 12, I have wanted to take an
active role in holistic empowerment for people who live
in my community. At a young age I saw a need for
this and realized that it is not something that will
not be distributed in the local school system that I
attended. Nor will it be provide by our local government
that my parents vote for and pay taxes to keep
running. Not until these establishments realize it as a
want/need for, and from, the community they are obligated
to serve. So I began my journey towards trying to
make a difference by becoming a volunteer at several
community organizations from the age of 13 until now. I
still feel as though there is a lot more for me to do.
My plan is to live to see the day when the people of
the city of Detroit start receiving their chance at
economical advancement and social quality. <br><br> I have
been a member of this yahoo club for a couple of weeks
now. I have observed people posting messages of
concerns that they have with the city of Detroit and
mostly city government. As well as profess their utter
disgust with the ways that our elected officials and
community leaders have addressed social issues. To sum it
up, all I have observe is a bunch of talk and very
little talk of taking action. Please excuse me if I a
come off too critical. My comments are not directed to
offend anyone, but more so to encourage the members to
start taking some form of action to enrich our city
holistically. I understand that everyone takes a stand in their
own way, but it is time for us to make a unified
stand for equality and justice for all residents of
Detroit. How long shall we wait for a leader to appear
amongst us (a messiah) to lead us towards change? Have we
learned so little from our four fathers that we still
have to wait for one individual to help us take
action. Were their deaths in vain? <br><br>to be

miscreant /MISS-kre-ent/ (noun) 1. unscrupulous,
depraved, an evildoer 2. A heretic, someone who holds false
beliefs<br><br>Example Sentence:<br> "The police often have their hands
full dealing with thieves, murderers, and other
miscreants."<br><br>I will resist the temptation to provide a second
example sentence as I usually do. It would be too easy to
apply this to a certain post-er or certain politicians,
lol. Use as you see fit! <br><br>Etymology:<br> From
the Middle English "miscreaunt," meaning "heretic,"
and Old French "mescreant" from present participle
"mescroire" meaning "to disbelieve." "Mes" means "wrongly"
and "croire" (from Latin "credere") means "believe."
The term has taken on an ironic tone as modern users
often deliver it with a smirk.

Upon first review of yourpost, I must say I was a
little annoyed. The feeling I got was not one of concern
for the city, but more of a display of elitism ( for
lack of a better word at this time). You asked Why
doesn't the city have a movie theater or a black bank?
Have you pushed to get these establishments in place?
Have you talked to people to make this happen? As a
proud resident of the City of Detroit, I must say I
scoff at your ignorance when u say tht all Detroiters
care about is caddilacs and alligator shoes. Where are
you getting this message from? the media? Have u
talked to citizens of the City of Detroit? if you have
you would know that we care about much more. We care
about the schools, the roads, and the ppl. "YOU
PEOPLE"??? Who are you? why do you feel the need to spew
your hatred around? Who wants to vacation in Detroit?
A lot of ppl do. <br><br>I feel everyone is
entitled to an opinion, I just am not happy with yours.

this a month or so ago. This is a good
thing. It will surely, though, also be a prime
opportunity for folks to protest the policies and actions of
Dennis on a national stage. This will be a major
embarrassment for Archer. This will be interesting, lol. I'm
sure the police actions against protestors will be
secondly only to the actions taken against the WTO
protests last year. We will see how he handles it. If the
protests don't come to pass, then it will mean that either
those that usually protest have given up, decided on
other courses of action, missed a strategic

charter does stipulate that the council should operate in
committees, something they have yet to do, but I'm sure it
falls under one of them. Wanted to run for mayor but
was told by the "Council of Elders" that he was too
young. While I respect most of the folks on that
council, I think that if the brother thought he should

example of the older generations oppression of those
younger than them. Kwame is 44. I know when I told one of

Freep Interviews Dennis "Dubyah"
Archer<br><a href=http://freep.com/voices/columnists/earch24_20010124.htm
target=new>http://freep.com/voices/columnists/earch24_20010124.htm</a><br>(More
rambling rhetoric. Dennis comments, or dances
around, questions on: being black enough, being
accessible, transportation, riverfront casinos, city
services, and the next election. I could comment on this
sentence by sentence. I won't (unless you insist, lol).
These were my favorites. <br><br>On riverfront casino
progress; "Whatever is going to be done, I will be
forthcoming before the public in letting everybody know what
has occurred and exactly what we are doing." He said
that during the casino selection process and we had to
pry answers out of him about his decisions. This
process of land acquisition has been so fouled up that he
had better be forthcoming. Not only will we want to
know, but you can bet that Wall Street will also want
to know as well.<br><br>Next: …the City of Detroit
10 years from now will be $860 million in debt."
While it is essential that we build the new stadiums
and get the permanent casinos up & running, this is
deficit is not likely to occur. A report issued by the
American Economics Group states "The 10-year problem
identified in the FY 2001 Executive Budget is overstated." I
don't know why he insists on sticking to this. If
Greenspan lowers rates again (likely), and Dubyah gets his
tax cut (also likely), we will most likely avoid a
recession serious enough to push us into this large of a
deficit.<br><br>Next: " There's just no way, in my view, when you start
dealing with the number of different unions, the fact
that there had not been any training whatsoever of our
city employees, and the training we've introduced
since I came in we're now going through performance
reviews and evaluations for all our employees, and I
think the morale, the assessment of where we are
despite the challenges that we face in different
departments, and we will overcome every challenge that we face
despite all that, I will tell you that city services have
improved." First off, I will leave it to you language
instructors to dissect this sentence, lol. Secondly, I will
let you draw your on conclusions about the level of
city services. I do, however want to complete his
comment about morale. MORALE SUCKS, DUDE! That's why he
couldn't finish that comment! We have lost more talent
because of Dennis that it isn't funny! Folks that had to
take a 10% cut in pay were offered only a 1% raise.
Shit sucks down there! Practically every city employee
that I have heard from, even some appointees, want
this man to go!<br><br>Okay, I'm done. For now, that
is. Lol<br><br>Oh, almost forgot one! "So I say to
those who say, "why should we believe?" just take a
look at my track record, and I think that I will be
found worthy. And if I run, I will win. I don't care
who's in the race." I think we may have a surprise for
you sir. J I also think it is time we returned some
humility back to the office. Whatever happened to the idea
of a "humble servant"?<br><br>Okay, now I'm done,

take a step for fairness and equality by extending
domestic partner benefits to the unmarried partners of
city employees. <br><br>Extending Domestic Partner

equal pay for equal work and sends a message that all
families are important. Health care is a critical
component to building strong and healthy families.
<br><br>The City of Detroit would be in a better position to
attract and retain talented workers if it offered
Domestic Partner benefits. It would also show that Detroit
was a progressive and welcoming place to many

being inclusive. <br><br>Domestic Partner benefits are
becoming more and more popular. A growing number or

this policy, and Detroit should join them. Detroit

I agree all the problems with and around Detroit
are fixable - by degrees. I also agree that the black
family is not what it should be. But, that is a seperate
and distinct problem. There is a connection as you
say it is in the schools (by the way, a third
problem) and the general community. But that path is far
too narrow for all of us to travel. We have that
today with the Black Leadership. Several, if not many
organizations that all have a different agenda, independent
leader and above all seperate money.<br>The Black Family
is like a microcosm on the sun. By no means, am I
discounting your original premis. The Black Families are the
feet that are attached to the dreams or prayers during
the manufacturing of that dream/prayer to assist in
the mobilization of said dream.<br>To fix Detroit
requires first of all Leadreship. Leadership capable of
identifying the problems, gaining concensus as to the
remedy(s)and setting the operation in motion. Feet. <br>That's
a very simplistic example, and we all know it is
much more involved than that, but until we as a people
first love and share with other blacks whatever we can,
there will always be those who prey rather than pray.
<br>Detroit, to gain a real fix, it like other black urban
centers across the country, requires a National black
agenda that we can take not only to the political
structures in this country, but to the UN, the world. Put
this country on the world stage, stripped of the black
dollars that hide it's shame and the political structure,
including the courts will come to the table in a very
aimiable way. <br>We must destroy the myth of happy-feet,
black folks, eating and drinking our wealth away for
others to spend theirs and dream to be where we are
until they get here.<br>I don't want to get too long,
but issues like these are very important and
relavent. I would volunteer come to a meeting, where we all
could get together and discuss the ways we might go
about fixing Detroit. <br>I appreciate everyone's
thoughts and responses and very much enjoy this
forum.<br><br>roc
