Ed Kramer is now in his 9th year of incarceration without trial (more than 16 years by Georgia’s algorithm for “time served”). Georgia's longest pre-trial detainee, Ed was charged on August 25, 2000 with crimes he did not commit; he has always maintained his innocence. Despite continued requests for a trial, Gwinnett County set and retracted a court date on 10 separate occasions. A premeditated assault on Ed by a masked Sheriff's Deputy resulted in a traumatic brain injury; he is legally disabled from the attack.

Ed's legal fees to date have exceeded $255,000; his medical expenses over twice that. Over the past 8 years, Ed has received well over 1,000 medical treatments – more than 20 times what one person would endure in a lifetime, and has been hospitalized on six occasions. Civil, Religious and Human Rights violations continue to be documented in Ed’s case. There has been no trial, yet it seems Ed has already been convicted and sentenced. In October 2006, Kramer filed a motion demanding dismissal of all charges for violation of his speedy trial rights. The dismissal was denied despite the fact that a similar motion in 2005 was entirely ignored; a motion to appeal has been filed. Ed awaits dismissal of his charges or exoneration by a jury.

Former Georgia Congressman and Intelligence official Bob Barr entered an Amicus curiae citing the Appellate Court to, "rebuke the entities responsible in the strongest language available... that this kind of illicit, illegal confluence of dilatory, patently constitutionally infirm behavior be ended and effectively condemned."
