Folks -
Recently I learned about the Community Association Directory, published by
the city's Department of Planning. Eight dollars later I have a copy, and
I'd like to recommend it to all.
The directory "lists over 775 community associations, umbrella groups and
City-wide organizations." Associations are organized into the city's
geographical districts.
This is a great book, and I recommend it to anyonw who A) wants to find out
about associations in their area; or B) wants to connect with other groups
throughout the city. For more information, call Ms. Theresa Edwards of the
Community Planning Division. She's at tel. 410-396-9555. I couldn't find
a web page or email address.
WANT TO GET IN THE NEXT VERSION? Ms. Edwards says that the Directory is
being updated at this time, and if you'd like to get your group into it,
you should act quickly. Give her a call soon.
I hope that this is useful -
Charlie Stevenson, citizen
Hamilton
Some quick reminders about using the list:
1) Due to an incident of foul language and "flaming," the list is now
moderated. Hopefully this will pass.
2) The purpose of Neighbor Net is to discuss and enhance community life
and empowerment in the Baltimore area. Postings should relate to this
life. If you wish to announce other events of justice and transformation,
get them posted by keeping them to a couple of lines.
3) You can reach the editory anytime at pmic@... .
Thanks!

I have been helping the Rose Street Community Center acquire used
computers for over a year now. To this point, none of those computers
have been stolen. The computers are benefiting young people in the
community who might otherwise have little or no access to computers.
Last night, several teen-agers in the neighborhood began using the
computers to put together a community newspaper (which they also did
last year).

Folks -
I'm trying to build a list of community groups, and active citizens, who
live near Burdick Park, and to whom the park is an important part of life.
The area bordered by Harford Road, Md. School for the Blind, Belair Road,
and Echodale / Frankfort is roughly what I had in mind.
Also - Today I got a copy of the city's 1999 Community Association Directory
- a wealth of good information, but it could use more maps! Call Ms.
Theresa Edwards at the Community Planning Division of city hall if you're
interested: 410396-9555.

I'm sorry and I apologize if you were upset. The individual who wrote the
letter you quoted is my own son, 23. He and I (52) evidently need to
discuss the purpose of the list, because I'd like to see him become a
contributor. But foul language and polemical spew will ruin this list for
all if allowed to. He's off the list for now, so you might be able to
reach him at Nodnol666@... if you'd like.
BTW, he's performing at The Brass Monkey on the 22nd. The calendar blurb
is at www.grassroots1776.com/baltical.html, "December" link. Should be
fun.
This is a new list, too - you are one of the charter members (of whom there
are not quite 30 so far). Each letter, each contribution, will be very
important for the future of this group!
Peace,

let's also duly forget that larry hubbard was a member of a dangerous local

Thanks for that posting about raising a computer for that school. What
kind are they looking for? I ask because many "obsolote" machines -
including 486 machines and some powerful Macs - can be purchased for $200 -
300. (A truly current machine that's significantly more capable will run a
good grand or more, I'd say) Computer Renaissance in Timonium would be a
good place to look, as well as MIS departments of various levels of
government. Social Security would be good to check into.
I think it's important for schools to get "wired", and for teachers to
become trained and skilled in using the net. Perhaps there's someone on
this list who has that skill...
Peace,
Charlie Stevenson
Cecil Elementary School is in a rough area of Baltimore. The school has been
trying for several years to collect enough Giant receipts to get a computer,
but hasn't been able to get enough, since there isn't a Giant in the
neighborhood. The Baltimore Jewish Cultural Chavurah (Secular Humanistic) is
collecting Giant receipts for Cecil Elementary, but we're a small group of
about 20 or 25 active households. If anyone wants to donate, receipts can be
sent to BJCC c/o Judith Seid, 623 Lake Drive, Towson, MD 21286.

Folks -
Here are three activities, all within the next month. And please send mail
about anything interesting or helpful that you find!
1. BALTIMORE COUNTY TOY DRIVE - the Department of Social Services is
running short on the toys it's collecting for the county's needy. They
will do a distribution next Monday and Tuesday, the 20th and 21st, and
would like to collect new, unwrapped toys THIS WEEK in preparation. The
collection point is a their offices in Towson; they ask that people call
ahead if coming down. Interested? Call the volunteer office at
410-853-3020, 3021, or 3024.
2. ROSE STREET COMMUNITY CENTER will have its fifth annual tree lighting
this Friday the 17th, at 4:30 pm. This is a beleaguered community that is
taking a stand against drugs and violence. They deserve our support; we
can learn a lot from them. Their story is on line on the Grass Roots
Gazette, which has a link on the Grass Roots Calendar web page:
www.grassroots1776.com/baltical.html . Or call 410-675-1207. Marc
Steiner's link on SunSpot also has good information.
3. NORTHEAST'S "CITIZENS ON PATROL" ROLL-OUT, Saturday, January 8. C.O.P.
is a citizens' volunteer organization that provides extra eyes for
neighborhood security. For more info, call Naomi at the HARBEL Community
Center: 410-444-2100.

The HARBEL Association is having its community Christmas tree lighting at
7:00 pm Monday, December 13. The location is 5807 Harford Road; everyone
is invited, especially residents of the Hamilton / Northeast neighborhoods.
HARBEL provides a wide array of services and information to people in the
area. For information on all HARBEL activities, call them at 410-444-2100.
If your community has similar groups, and activities, why not let us know?
It's good to learn what Baltimore's people and communities are doing to

Dear folks,
Some of us might already know of the "Million Mom March" against gun
violence, and in favor of handgun laws, planned for DC on Mothers' Day of
next year.
This is an issue which has touched many people in our communities. At the
recent meeting at Gatch Memorial Church, people were present who lost a son
and a nephew, respectively. And these tragedies continue to accumulate.
If you're interested, check them out at http;//www.millionmommarch.com/ .
And consider spreading the word in your community, your congregation,
workplace, libraries, etc. It might save someone's life.
There will be a MEETING on January 8 at the Unitarian church in Bethesda,
Md. of interested people. Details at the website.
Happy and peaceful holidays,
Charlie Stevenson

and restore a culture and life of decency and peace. We are honored by
their invitation.
By the way, they are rebuilding their community center, which was torched
in May this year by drug dealers. They need all sorts of skills, and
stuff. GRO-PMIC hopes to publish a list of it soon.

Folks -
First, as you may have noticed, emails on Neighbor Net have included small
ads at the bottom. Unless there is a real demand for these, they will be
discontinued in about a week. eGroups, the host service, offers this
option at small cost to its list-customers. Of course, there will be no
cost to you at any time.
Secondly - for people living in the Hamilton / Northeast neighborhoods,
there will be a park clean-up in Burdick Park on Saturday, Dec. 3rd, at 3
pm. Anyone interested is invited to meet by the jungle gyms at 3 pm; bring
trashbags (recycle your grocery bags), and gloves for broken glass. And
let others know, as well. This is a chance to tidy up the park for the
holidays, and for neighborhood people to meet and do some networking.
Questions? Send email to pmic@... .

Hi,
Welcome to Neighbor Net. We're here for activist neighborhood associations and
volunteers, their members and friends throughout the Baltimore area. We want to
support communication within given communities, and between communities
throughout the area.
We believe that effective leadership can only come from activists in Baltimore's
neighborhoods and villages, and that when responsible public officials and
businesses follow and support us, we can rebuild this city.
Neighbor Net will carry news, commentary, announcements, opinion, etc. Stay
