Subject: DCI Announcement: Video Remote Interpreting (VRI)
mattdans@...
Send Email Send Email

Hello! CEO/President of DCI, Ray has recently announced DCI's new service - Video Remote Interpreting.

To read Ray's announcement, read below --

We are pleased to announce that Deaf Communication by Innovation (DCI) is now providing Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) service, in addition to its existing services: community interpreting, captioning, video production, ASL instruction and consulting.

Our goal, as always, is to employ the latest technology to improve communication between deaf, hard of hearing and hearing individuals.  VRI certainly meets this criteria. Using VRI, two or more people, deaf and hearing, can meet face to face while a remote interpreter translates using special software and the Internet to connect a computer at the meeting site with the interpreter at a different location.  VRI is most suitable for impromptu business and organization meetings as well as emergency situation when a live interpreter is not available.  It is not government funded like VRS.  Rather, VRI is billed to the user based on minutes used.

While VRI cannot replace the need for a live interpreter, it is especially appropriate for:

-Rural areas where there may be a lack of qualified interpreters,
-Short follow-up medical appointments,
-Emergency room prep-prior to the arrival of a “live” interpreter,
-Brief (unscheduled) meetings with co-workers, staff and employees,
-Short walk-in appointments,
-Brief (unscheduled) meetings in educational settings with students-also with teachers or parents (not IEP),
-The need for a scheduled interpreter has not been filled and there is critical information that needs to be communicated,
And many more!

If you are interested in exploring the many advantages of VRI, please feel free to contact us or email to mdans@... to set up a demonstration.

Thank you for your time,

Ray
Have a great one!

NAD Urges FCC and Industry to Protect VRS

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) recently learned that
individuals across the United States were arrested for conspiring to
defraud the Video Relay Service (VRS) program, administered by the
Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The NAD is disappointed by
these serious and significant allegations. VRS is a critical service that gives
deaf and hard of hearing people the ability to communicate in American Sign
Language with hearing people over the telephone
network.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) mandated nationwide telecommunications
relay services to make the telephone network accessible to people who are deaf
or hard of hearing or who have
speech impairments. VRS is one of several kinds of relay services
available that enable deaf and hard of hearing individuals to communicate in a
manner that is as close to “functionally equivalent” as possible to hearing
telephone users. VRS has created numerous opportunities for deaf and hard of
hearing people at home, in the
community and at the workplace.

“Thanks to relay services, millions of deaf and hard of hearing people
have achieved more independence and improved access to family and friends,
businesses, education, health care, and other services made available through
the nation’s telephone system. The alleged actions of a few people must not
detract from the significant benefits and improved quality of life achieved
through this important civil right,”
said NAD President Bobbie Beth Scoggins. “The FCC and other federal agencies
must continue to monitor relay services diligently to prevent fraud and to
address allegations of fraud promptly to preserve the integrity of the
Interstate Telecommunications Relay Service Fund. The FCC should also continue
to ensure the delivery of high quality relay services and innovation needed to
achieve functional equivalency.”

The NAD urges the FCC to engage in nationwide mass media efforts to
educate government agencies, businesses, and the public about the
benefits that relay services provide to all Americans. The FCC and other
agencies must also adopt a watchful eye and take prompt action to address any
rejection of relay service calls by government agencies, businesses, and service
providers in violation of the ADA.

Subject: (Westmont) Recovery Meetings for Deaf/HOH Community in Western Burbs
dmuth821@...

Good morning Deaf Illinois News representative.

My name is Dave Muth.  I've been referred to you by Jill Sahakian at the Anixter Center as a result of contacting the Chicago Hearing Society (CHS).

I'm currently on the Board of Directors at the West Suburban Alano Club (WSAC) located in Westmont, IL.  The WSAC is a recovery facility dedicated to providing a safe environment for individuals involved with recovery from alcohol and drug-related addictions.

The WSAC has recently taken on a project to provide ASL interpreted AA meetings to support individuals in the deaf/HOH community who are currently (or wish to be) involved with recovery.  At the present time we have AA meetings on Wednesday and Saturday evenings at 7:00 pm (selected dates) that will be attended by ASL interpreters.  We are working in conjuction with CAIRS, the CHS and Addiction Recovery for the Deaf (ARD).

Jill suggested that I contact Deaf Illinois News as a means of conveying this project to the deaf/HOH community.  I've attached an Excel spreadsheet that identifies the ASL interpreted AA meetings at the WSAC for the remainder of 2009.

The WSAC would be truly grateful for any assistance you could provide in getting this information out the deaf/HOH community.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

Thank you in advance for any efforts put forth on the behalf of the WSAC.
