David Stove was a Philosopher at Sydney University . During the debacle of the period which commenced during the sixties fueled by feminists , indigenists , greenies , marxists diversitists , socialists , multiculturists and the like , he held the all but abandoned line of rationality.
About 1970 the new Department of Traditional and Modern Philosophy emerged. Stove said of it in 1991, ``the first twenty years.. have been fertile in good philosophy…to be a member of it is a pleasure as well as a privilege “.
His summation of the condition of humanity was that “ there is simply no avoiding the conclusion that the human race is mad. There are scarcely any human beings who do not have some lunatic beliefs or other to which they attach great importance.
People are mostly sane enough, of course, in the affairs of common life: the getting of food, shelter, and so on. But the moment they attempt any depth or generality of thought, they go mad almost infallibly. … the more powerful minds… fall into the worship of some intelligent and dangerous lunatic, such as Plato, or Augustine, or Comte, or Hegel, or Marx. “
This man has to be worth study and remembrance .This site is a phoenix . The previous site of the same name was closed about June 2003 .
It is open to anyone who has a contribution to make which relates to the philosophy of David Stove , by way of conjecture , observation , criticism or otherwise . Keep it good humoured and sensible in the spirit of his work , and we will all benefit . We may even create some of the atmosphere of his “ best club in the world “ as he called his Department.
