Some remakes should never happen.

The Ghost and Mrs. Muir gets a really, really awful reimagining
over in Australia. Apparently her name isn't Muir anymore and he's no longer
a 140 year dead sea captain but now a dead eighties rocker. I guess
they're trying to make it 'hip.' This loose retelling is called Spirited.

The original Ghost and Mrs. Muir was a British novel from
1945 adapted into a film in 1947 and later an American TV series in 1968.
The plot was fairly straight forward, a snarky old ghost falls in love with a
living woman who moves into his house. And the ghost antagonizes anyone
whom he feels deserves it. Apparently Australia has decided it needs a
remake...

and it will be starring this guy as the ghost.

Subject: Film from book adaptations (Hates and loves)
JTheGoblinKing@...

There are a few instances where I prefer the film to the book it was based
on.

In general I prefer the books to their film or TV adaptations except for a
few instances:

With Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files as much as I love the books I have to
say I feel Bob was vastly improved in the show transformed from a two
dimensional talking skull with dirty jokes to a slightly lecherous yet tragic
Oscar Wilde-esque ghost.

I like the Wicked play more than the novel.

I feel Tim Burton's version of Ichabod Crane in Sleepy Hollow was more
sympathetic than the version in Washington Irving's story.

I liked the end of the Interview with the vampire film more than how the
novel ended.

I liked The Ghost and Mrs. Muir movie more than the book. Granted I did
NOT like that the Ghost and Mrs. Muir film had Captain Gregg leave her until
the day she died (he doesn't do that in the book) I do however prefer that
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir film and sixties TV show gave the ghost a physical
form. He never physically appears in the novel.

------------

Films where I did NOT like the adaptations:

I don't like the film Queen of the damned. All it shares with the novel
are a few character names and the title. Even without the book it's a
poorly done vampire film. There are two scenes where the hero is told that
Akasha killed her old king and each time he's surprised! Also the so-called
hero fed on innocent groupies.

I don't like the film Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. They
treated the fact that Snape was the half-blood prince as an after thought and
added this romance that wasn't really there to begin with. Also the scenes
felt badly strung together and the musical accompaniment didn't fit the
emotions of the scenes they were used for.

The 1997 version of Les Miserables with Liam Neison was okay (despite the
cut out Eponine storyline) but certain changes were unnecessary. It was
not necessary to make Jean Valjean illiterate. And the scene of him slapping
Cosette felt VERY out of character to me.

I have just created a new petition for The Dresden Files. Since there's no
chance of getting the show back we can try to maintain certain aspects of
the show for 2012 when Jim Butcher plans to sell the movie rights. These
aspects include Terrence Mann's version of Bob, whom as we fans of The Dresden
Files TV series will attest, was one of the better aspects of the TV
series.

This petition is specifically to request that new incarnations of The
Dresden Files maintain Terrence Mann as Bob.

Good grief, just about the time I start to think there's hope our species
might just crawl the hell out of the Dark Ages, we jump right back into it
with dumb shit like book burnings. People who burn books (any books) do so
out of fear. They fear the written word, which is stronger than any one
person could ever be. This poor girl who confessed to you that she burns
books probably can't read very well, or tried her hand at writing at one
point and failed miserably. Those are usually the first to jump on the
book-burning bandwagon.

Pitiful.

When hating Twilight goes too far...

First let me say I don't like Twilight. I will never like Twilight

people from reading Twilight just because I do not like it.

A while back I joined a group on IMVU called We hate Twilight.
It was a message board discussion group on the IMVU site (separate from

for me this is the step too far.

Pet Peeve: I HATE the term Torture Porn, ESPECIALLY being associated with
Edgar Allen Poe. Okay, this is a pet peeve of mine. I love horror but I
HATE the term Torture Porn and I don't think Edgar Allen Poe would have
liked to be referred to as the father of Torture Porn. Just because a horror
story has a torture scene or elaborate and cruel way of dying does not
make it a form of porm. Just because there are some lunatics out there who
get off on it does not mean Edgar Allen Poe should be associated with that.
Edgar Allen Poe's work is NOT torture porn. Have a little more respect
for the father of modern mystery and while you're at it see if someone can
come up with a new term because not all of us who like horror are getting
sexually arroused by it.

Harry Potter and The Deathly Hollows has been named the best book of the
decade. I know a lot of people did not care for how the Harry Potter series
ended but I liked it. I find it depressingly cynical that people who
didn't like this book could accept all these supernatural creatures: Wizards,
witches, trolls, goblins, goblins, unicorms, elves, vampires, werewolves,
dragons, ect... But they can't accept a happy ending. It's 'unrealistic.'
Happy endings in real life are a lot more common than hatching dragon
eggs.

I am glad Harry Potter and The Deathly Hollows is number 1 on the
list. I am disturbed that Twilight is 32. I don't think it deserves to be
on the list at all. And poor Jim Butcher didn't make the list at all
despite the quiet success of his Dresden Files book series.
