Description

DarkSkyCommunities is a discussion group encouraging the development and maintenance of special communities where the night sky and the nighttime environment are valued and protected. The focus areas for this forum include dark sky communities, dark sky preserves, and dark observing locations with public accommodations nearby. The emphasis will be on affordable, sustainable dark-sky communities where those of modest financial means will be able to live, work, and retire. Anyone with a lot of money can buy their way to dark skies, but the rest of us are stuck living in communities with terrible light pollution and long drives to dark skies. Many of us have worked (and continue to work) diligently for many years educating our communities about environmentally-responsible outdoor lighting. Though progress has been made, as we look towards retirement (perhaps earlier), we find ourselves ready to make the move to a dark-sky community.

... Yup, kids. You can see your hometown from space, but you can't see space from your hometown anymore. JMM
