This twelve week series is designed to give you a nibble on twelve different dances and you can mix and match any combo you desire, with or without biggie fries. Many of these we will teach ourselves and we will have guest instructors for others. This is just for the basic and no experience is needed. As below I am trying to select 12 dances to be taught and would like your input.
Dances will be taught over twelve weeks on Tuesday nights from 7-10 from Jan 5 to March 23 at Triangle Dance Studio, 2603 S. Miami Blvd. Durham, NC. Other info and registration at www.dancegumbo.com/Lessons
We will do 12 dances. There will be two dances and classes done per night (7:00 to 8:30 and 8:30 to 10:00) and each dance will be taught over two weeks, so 24 classes in all. Advance pricing will vary from $6 per class for the entire 24 (12 dances) to $9 per class for just two classes ( 1 dance). See pricing below and Paypal will be up very soon at www.dancegumbo.com/Lessons
We will also have gift certificates that we can mail out. Now is your chance to get that clutz out from in front of the tele and on the dance floor, or your hotshot friend who can dance a spectacular Dish Drainer Polska but knows nothing else.
Here are the dances being considered. I would like to know what people want to take so I can narrow the list to twelve.
If you will possibly be taking classes, please help by letting me know which classes you might take by putting VL- very likely ML- moderately or No. You can send to jackhwolf@... Remember, this is not a popularity poll. I just need to know which classes are more likely to get filled up. If you are likely to take a class but have time or day constraints, let us know which dates or times you would be unavailable. The early class will be 7-8:30 and the second 8:30-10.

Here is the deal. For those in the know, I have been shifting my GumboLine from a mailed newsletter through list serves and Yahoo groups to actively updating my website at www.dancegumbo.com and just pasting the stuff in here. So if you have been jonesing on not having the newsletter just check the web as it is all there.
Sunday November 22. Salsa Social with DJ Abuelo Salsero Jack, yours truly, moi-meme, will spin the platteros for the new revived, reinvented, and refried Sunday Salsa Social. In the downstairs at Triangle Dance Studio. We are up to our third SSS with Marco Tapia and Carlos Reyes having done a great job on the first two. We are having good turnouts and a mix of pretty good dancers as well as beginners and a good gender balance. I am going high tech with the cement mixer and laptop now. 7-10 PM. $5. Directions to the studio on homepage.
Abuelo Salsero on the Cement Mixer
Sunday November 22. Subdudes with Diana Jones. The dudes are a great Louisiana band, one of my favorites and high up in my best dj music for funky West Coast dancing. If you have been to my dances, you have heard Papa Dukie and the Mud People- check it here-I doubt that they will have the dance floor open on this one. Diana Jones does more alternative country and folk, might be an interesting match up, See her at http://www.dianajonesmusic.com/ Given the AC and this combo I expect more concert than dance. Arts Center, Carrborro. $25 7 PM www.artscenterlive.org

Saturday November 28 Thanksgiving Dance Gumbo- Classic Mix. No theme on this, just the ancient mariner's mix of swing, salsa, zydeco, waltz, et al. Triangle Dance Studio. Squanto WIlfong will head up the parking crew. Bring your leftover cranberry casseroles. We will be in the back studio in a festive spirit.
Saturday Nov 28 Dmitri Resnick at the Blue Bayou, Hillsborough No Cover 9:30. Dmitri is a Chapel Hill boy who honed his chops in New Orleans from 1989 to 2001 fronting Dmitri Resnick and the Clowns. Returning to NC, Chatham County, he displays some excellent musicianship which seems to infect people who work the Crescent City music scene, (see Adrian Duke 12/4). Sampling his wares at http://www.dmitriresnik.com/music.cfm I am hearing a mix of some excellent up-tempo swing tunes with Curly Cue and Clementine, which will get the swing dancers on the floor, a nice folk acoustical ditty with Great Day, a classic Nawlins' funk sound with Rich Woman, and a forgettable delta blues in the classic parody
of a Chapel Hill boy trying to sound like a black sharecropper- only real flat one in the group. No cover is always a good deal and check and see what is cooking with Gary selling the club www.bluebayouclub.com

Wolfie's Worcestershire December 3 to 9
Thursday December 3 Solomon Douglas Swingtet. Tnis ten piece band is a favorite at dance workshops and lindy exchanges throughtout the US. The repetoire is classic Basie, Ellington, big band material, and Solomon, who is pianist and bandleader as well as a Lindy dance teacher, did a long stint with the Glen Miller Band (the current touring band, he is not that old). Myspace samples are at http://www.myspace.com/solomondouglas
The local Lindy Hoppers love him and caught him between Charlotte and VA gigs and booked him for the Triangle Dance Studio, yes, heard it right, back studio. I have never seen a band, let alone a ten piece, gig in the studio and imagine it will be packed if not sold out . 8:30- 12 MN $10. I am not aware of any advance sales or web, kind of a last minute, mystery gig.

Friday Dec 4. WXYC 80's Dance at Cats Cradle. I lived the 80s somewhat vicariously with my ten year old's predilection for Cyndi Lauper, Maddon, and MJ but also with my hipster friends and the New Wave of Talking Heads, Pretenders, B52s, so this might be fun. 9 PM $5-8 www.catsdcradle.com
Friday Dec 4. Adrian Duke at the Blue Bayou Club. Adrian is one of our better local musicians having emigrated from Nawlins' and bringing that Professor Longhair flavor funky jazzy Crescent City party sound. Check it http://www.adrianduke.com/
Saturday Dec 5. David DiGi's Carrboro Contra with the Tribal Tune Twisters (being David DiGi, Roger Gold, and Jim Roberts) with Barbara Groh calling www.daviddg.com $9 8 PM
Saturday Dec 5 Latin Project Salsa Band . Benefit Latin Dance at Carmen's Cuban Cafe, Morrisville. Join the Christmas party with all proceeds going to Christmas presents for children in need through the Wake County Human Services. 9 PM. Advance/Door $15/20. Couples $25/30. www.carmenscubancafe.com
Saturday Dec 5 Laura Ridgeway. If you have to swing she does some nice vocals and jazz/pop standards, but for my taste, this is TSDS' most overplayed band, having replaced Gregg Gelb, who had better musicianship, and before him Leon Jordan who was standard big band. Sherm must like her and it is hard to argue taste, but if you like to throw any west coast, blues or rock into your Sentimental Journey not here.
Jack's Jumbalaya December 10 to 16
Friday December 11. Tinsley Ellis at the Blue Bayou, Hillsborough. National level Alligator Record's recording artist out of Atlanta, makes one of his frequent BBC stops for a CD release of his new disc Speak No Evil. Tinsley has a hard edged blues rock in the likes of Jimmy Thackery or Tommy Castro, and what I like about him, and forgive me for overstating this point, is that the band grooves as a unit and is not just a backdrop for an egotist doing guitar solos, as one often sees in the blues and rock medium. Judge for yourself, on the very cool Alligator jukebox Here $20/18 adv, $22/20 door. www.bluebayouclub.com
Saturday December 12. Mystery Hillbillies for TSDS Swing Dance. From sampling their myspace here http://www.myspace.com/mysteryhillbillies I like them. Some of the other local rockabilly groups like Edsel 500, Straight Eights, tend to be one dimensional hyper uptempo Buddy Holly stuff, but this group is more versatile and laid back like the old Cigar Store Indians and provide some good country two steppin, swing, even some west coast. www.triangleswingdance.org $11/9 8 PM.

Down The Road A Piece
December 31. New Years Eve Gumbo. Join Paris, Pluto, Bluto, Toto, Squanto, Sasquach, Santa, Santeria, Santana, St. Francis, to celebrate the best of times. We will have the frim fram sauce with the shafafa on the side. Champagne toast. Heavy hor's (not to be confused with overweight ladies of the night), clackers and smackers. We are in the downstairs so will limit it to about 30-40. I'll get the advance Paypal up soon, but let me know if you are in.
Ongoing News:
More complete news on the web at www.dancegumbo.com/news Index is below but I am just going to paste the stuff that wasn't in last month's GLine.
Web Site Index- Not all here.
1)Sunday Salsa Social Going Great. Abuelo Salsero Jack aka Me, Tonight
2) New Dances, Cancellations
3) Latin Music USA on PBS. Definitely check out this video, it is great at
A group of us have restarted the Sunday Evening salsa social at Triangle Dance Studio with a squad of DJs including myself aka Abuelo Salsero Jack, Mathew Walden, Marco, Carlos Reyes, Felix Padilla. We have had good turnouts with a good gender mix and some pretty good dancers as well as beginners. Marco did a great job kicking off. Abuelo Salsero Jack is up at the plate Nov 22.
Other New Dances, Cancellations, and Changes
11/17 Cimaron Third Friday Latin dance is gone.
10/20 I just updated the Ongoing-Dance Page to reflect new changes. Hot Club of Durham has upped their Lindy social to every Tuesday. Rueda practice on Sundays are on hold, but as above the new Sunday Salsa Social is on. Blues Dance Friday is gone as is 1st Friday Tangovita Argentine Tango.
If you show up at the studio for this Tuesdays first class nobody will be there. We just didn't have enough folks registered to cover the freight, so we had to cancel the studio rental, but I am doing some teaching here at the house and if you are still interested check the web at www.dancegumbo.com/Lessons or give me a holler.
Latin Music USA on PBS
I just watched for the second time today a wonderful piece that is set to broadcast on PBS soon called Latin Music USA but is viewable now by going tohttp://www.pbs.org/wgbh/latinmusicusa and hitting View the Show
Whether you are crazy about the music like myself or not, it is just a great historical document and wonderful music from Tito Puente and Machito to Carlos Santana, Sam the Sham, Flaco Jimenez, Cuban Pete, Ricky Martin, Gloria Estefan.
Cuban Pete and Millie Donay at the Palladium in the 50s From Latin Music USA
Only the last two segments with the Reggaeton and Jennifer Lopez felt kind of depressing - the trajectory from great music to pre packaged pop, hip hop, and reggaeton, but thats just the grumpy abuelo in me. The kids'll be alright.
Speaking of Abuelo, DJ Wolfy Jack turns into DJ Abuelo Salsero Jack to help with the new Sunday Salsa Social that starts November 8. Here is the scoop pasted directly from www.dancegumbo.com/News
I am moving from doing frequent newsletters to posting stuff on my web and most of what is below will be pasted in. Some folks like to get the whole antipasto in their lap at once, even with anchovies on their pants, but most of the material here is now on-line and it is easier for me to update the web than to spend twelve hours writing this newsletter which I dont have to, since it is already written and on line.
New Sunday Salsa Social Starts November 8 with DJ's Marco, Matt, Carlos, and Abuelo Salsero
A group of us have restarted the Sunday Evening salsa social at Triangle Dance Studio with a squad of DJs including myself aka Abuelo Salsero Jack, Mathew Walden, Marco, Carlos Reyes, Felix Padilla. The social will be in the downstairs from 7-10. $5. Come out and support the effort. Matt had been doing these alone in the past and they were OK, but we did tend to lack Salseras, so ladies come out.
New Thursday Salsa Social at Cuban Revolution
Every Thursdayat Cuban Revolution Bar and Restaurant, 318 Blackwell St, Durham, in the American Tobacco Historic District.. The social has been going about five weeks and I like it. James Cobo is the dj and does about 90% excellent dancable Salsa dance music with a few cha chas and bachatas. The floor is either wood or faux wood, but dances very well, much better than Carmens or Rumba 54, though not quite as good as good as Fred Astaire or my living room. The event starts at 9 PM and is FREE !!
What to make of the Fidelista theme ? It is a bit surreal with videos of Fidel Castro fighting Batista from the 50s and Che Guevera laid out dead in Bolivia, as they run the videos in loops all night long. Going to the website one presumes that these folks are Fidelistas, but other than the videos there is nothing to distinguish it from a typical upscale Durham bar. It is bright and clean, nice but not pretentious. Food is fair. Margaritas are $6. The baseball game is on HDTV so you can watch the Braves if you prefer that to Castro marching into Havana. There are large murals of JFK and Marilyn Monroe to further confound the variables. Maybe they can explain it www.thecubanrevolution.com
With the Cobo crew, all the best dancers were on the floor, but there were a goodly enough beginners, that it was not too intimidating and the atmosphere was inviting, friendly and informal. Unlike Copa, dress is informal. James does not crank the volume, like at the clubs, so you can't hear yourself think, or be able to socialize without having to scream. Save me a dance. www.cobobrothers.com
TSDS Election and Venue Change
Nominations for election to the board of Triangle Swing Dance Society are now underway. For the November 21 Third Saturday dance, there will be an election held as well as the annual potluck at 6:30 and the general membership meeting thereafter. Five positions are open on the eleven member board. The Armory was not available for the November 21 dance as well as the upcoming December dances, so these will be held at the Mar Vell Events Center, 119 W. Main St. which is just around the corner from the Armory. Directions and more information are available on the TSDS web at www.triangleswingdance.org

Blue Bayou Club For Sale
Gary Lee has provided the Triangle and, my own, Home Sweet Hillsborough, with a friendly environment for good blues, swing ,and zydeco, but he is putting the BBC on the auction block.
Music productions is a tough business. I have been there and done it, and still doing it, and producing live bands is a lot harder than teaching dance lessons or doing Gumbo. Jim Wilfong relates the story of booking a band into his old Captured Live Studio in Durham and having nobody, as in 0.00, people show up. He figured if he was out the $500 or so he would have the band play for him and the staff, and a good, albeit expensive, party was had by all, but that is the nature of the business. I myself created Losing My Shirt Productions for the Durham Music and Dance Festival in 2006, but had no intention of also forfeiting my trousers, boxers, socks, shoes, and tweed fedora.
For Gary it was a labor of love, but you can't live on fried onion rings forever, and I had told him not to invest in Pabst Blue Ribbon futures with that Madhoff guy. Gary is looking for somebody to continue the tradition of having good local roots bands and fairly impressive national acts at a small venue in a small town. In the past he has had Shemekiah Copeland, Jimmy Thackery, Tommy Castro, Rosie Ledet and quite a few times sold out the 100 seat capacity venue . We have taught Cajun and Zydeco dancing there, and appreciate Gary for having brought a little of the Bayou up to NC. Thanks and good luck.
LEAF and Shakori Festival Reviews
Being a long and boring review unless you were at the fests you can see it all at www.dancegumbo.com/News
Best Bets:
Sandra's Sammiches November 4 to Nov 11
Friday November 6. Teresa James w Dick 50. Teresa, who is a nationally popular usually plays with her band The Tramps, but now she is teaming up with Delbert McClinton's band Dick 50. She hails from Texas though currently impounded in LA and does a great roadhouse blues but with a twinge of country. Shades of Marcia Ball and facility with Texas Swing, honkytonk, and straight ahead raunchy blues. Check it out www.teresajames.com
Delbert McClinton encompasses a good share of my dj discography and the last time I saw him at the Bayou Boogaloo in Norfolk, I couldn't help noting to my sweetie that his band was absolutely kick ass, Hammond organ and all, so I would expect great things from this combo. I wouldn't even be surprised if Delbert shows up as he is rejoining his band for the Tater Jam in Kinston, NC the following day along with Teresa. $15 9:30-12;30 www.teresajames.com.
Teresa James
Saturday November 7. Zydecopious at Papa Mojos. Our local Zydeco band at Mel's place. I have not heard Mike and the boys for a while. They do some reasonable zydeco and Nawlins party music. Mike is a great lead singer with a lot of charisma. In all honesty Leo does not know how to play Zydeco accordion, and the band would go up a few notches with a solid accordion, but they still do a fun show. I noticed they dropped Clark on rubboard. $8 9:30-12:3 www.zydecopious.comwww.papamojosroadhouse.com
Saturday November 7. Charlotte Salsa Invitational at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Abel Pena and Zalmura Torres will perform and do workshops. Check out their video She spins like the wind, he looks a bit flat footed. Great athletic performance, though I favor something that speaks more to the music, not just incredible acrobatics, watch ya think. They were the world salsa champions so I reckon they would impress us at Dance Gumbo.
Saturday November 7. Rebecca and the Hi-Tones at the TSDS Swing Dance at the Durham Armory. Rebecca Newton has that fun up tempo half way countrified sound that reminds you of Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks. Swing lesson 7 PM. Dance 8-11:30. $11/9 (members)www.triangleswingdance.org
Saturday November 7. Argentine Tango Benefit. . Dance performances, milonga, silent auction, and raffle to benefit the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society at Le Paris Spa, Durham. The event starts at 7 PM with the auction and Tango performances. There will be a milonga starting at 10 PM until 2 AM. www.triangletango.com
Tangueros Smelling Each Other
Tuesday November 10. Charanga Carolina and the UNC Jazz Band for a Salsa andSwing Dance at Kenan Rehearsal Hall, UNC 8:30 PM $5 I am told there will be dance space.
Charanga is of Cuban origin and evolved from the danzon and features violin, cello, flute, and piano, some brass, but not as heavy a big brass sound like your mambo/salsa orchestras. Its a lighter sound but very dancable and they cover a wide range of Latin music styles. David Garcia teaches in the UNC music department and leads the band which features many of his students. I couldn't find samples of Charanga Carolina , but found some wonderful sounding Cuban Charanga from LA here: http://www.myspace.com/lacharangacubana I love it. I'm writing and grooving. Baile conmigo, baile, baile.
Charanga Carolina
Wolfie's Worcestershire November 12 to 18
Friday November 13. BBQs aka Bill Newton and the Big Blues Quartet at Papa Mojos. This is the swing dancers house band and can do jump blues but also some nice west coastable music too. $8 9:30-12:30 www.papamojosroadhouse.com
Bill and the Boys- How old could this be? The URL says at Captured Live.
Saturday and Sunday November 14 & 15.Copa Night Fifth Anniversary. James and Milton Cobo's weekend extravaganza (last year's NC Salsa Festival) with some of the nations best dancers and instructors. Workshops Saturday and Sunday at Triangle Dance Studio and Saturday Night show and dance at Parizades from 10:30 to 2 AM.
There are performances by many dancers and live music with Orquesta Gardell Saturday Night. Participants include Junior and Emily from LA, Yamulee Company from NYC, one of my favorites, check this performance out here , Universal Mambo from Orlando, DJ Renzo from DC and Cobo Brothers Dance Company and Mambo Dinamico from these parts. Saturday night event is $30/35 door. Workshops are $55 Sat and $45 Sun or full weekend pass for $95/105. Details at www.cobobrothers.com
Yamulee
Saturday November 14. Edsel 500 for the TSDS swing dance in Carrboro. Rockabilly. www.triangleswingdance.org
Jack's Jumbalaya November 19-25
Friday November 20. Hell Camino at Papa Mojos. Lenny Terenzi's new five piece has a solid female lead vocal in Cricket Megaraty. The band plays some hard rolling blues that sounds dancable, lots of West Coast.. Check out there sound here $8 9:30-12:30 www.papamojosroadhouse.com
Sunday November 22. Subdudes with Diana Jones. The dudes are a great Louisiana band, one of my favorites and great for funky West Coast dancing. If you have been to my dances, you have heard Papa Dukie and the Mud People- check it here I don't know if they will have the dance floor open or not on this one. Diana Jones does more alternative country and folk, might be an interesting match up, See her at http://www.dianajonesmusic.com/ Sure is perty. Given the AC and this combo I expect more concert than dance. Which is cool, but I gotta dance, if only in the men's room. Arts Center, Carrborro. $25 7 PM www.artscenterlive.org

Parking- The lot tends to fill up by about 8:30. You can help by carpooling and if you know the terrain, park in the Doggy Day Care, Dentist Office, or Best Realty. Be careful turning on and crossing Miami Blvd. It can be dangerous.
Advance Price Ticketing for this Saturday's Night of The Living DJs 11 ends Thursday and then goes from $12 to $15, so go on line at www.dancegumbo.com/NOLDJ and you can purchase by Paypal. If you get there by 8-9 I would not suspect a sell out, but it is possible.
Parking Considerations: The lot fills typically by 8:30. Miami Blvd. is very busy and dangerous. We are now going to wave people into the lot directly and if it is full send them out the back. If you are familiar with the setup you can help. 1) Carpool. 2) If you know the terrain, park in the Dentist or the Doggy Day Care or Best Realty across the street. A quick newsletter for my fine feathered frolickers, as I am off tonight to DJ at the TSDS DJDance at Triangle Dance Studio with my favorite DJ Wesley Boz. sharing the groove with your favorite numismatist DJ Wolfy Jack. This one Luddite will be trying out the new laptop after a century of hauling my CD player around. I will be coming on at about 10 and try to catch a few dances at Mathew's salsa dance first. One needs a dash of Salsa to spice up the swing.
If you are going Victorian tonight, as at the Victorian Ball, have fun and don't forget to empty the chamber pot.
Here is a toy. Beat counter. It is all in the tempo. You can download it to desktop also. I have been tapping my foot for 15 seconds and multiplying by four for 15 years. It's automatic. http://www.all8.com/tools/bpm.htm
The Best Bets section below, I have now tabbed and stolen from my website. I will update it more often and probably be shifting the newsletter to Web

9/20 Carrboro Music Festival. Multiple bands at multiple venues throughout the Paris of NC and Hoboken of the South. I used to grouse about it being all local talent and not bringing in a few national acts, still think t'would be better, but it is fun and relaxed and a good chance to sample the local gene pool. I counted at least 150 bands at 20 venues, yowsah. Its all free and if you have a beer and an appetizer at each venue, you will be fat and happy by the time the police haul you off. Actually, I think the idea of a club hoppin' event with lots of bands at lots of venues is very cool, they do the Beale Street Zydeco Festival in Memphis like that, but they bring in national talent and charge $10-15. You buy a bracelet for $10-15 for the event and can go club hoppin all night. Anyway, the Carrboro fest is a good
chance to sample all the local fare. www.carrborromusicfestival.com 1PM to 10 PM. All free.

10/8-10/11 Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival. The dreadheads, zydequarians, and stringcheesers return to Silk Hope, Chatham County, for this biannual melange of roots, old timey, world, and you name it music and dance. The schedule is now up at www.shakorihills.org
Mr and Mrs. Wolfy J are back by popular demand and lack of income to teach the zydeco and cajun two step. Preston Frank is back as always, though Keith Frank is not. Donna the Buffalo, of course, as Jeb's brother Jordan Puryear produces the event. Our friends from Beaufort Unknown Tongues return to play some more good Cajun and Zydeco.
I don't see this as one of the better lineups for a crossdancer like myself. Locos por Juan and Bravo Norteno are the only Latin bands I see, and Abuelo Salsero needs a good mambo band. Locos played at Taste of Durham this year and play Reggaeton and Hip Hop, not any dancable salsa. Bravo Norteno http://www.myspace.com/grupobravonorteno are a NC Mexican band that does mostly rancheros, Mexican polkas, no cumbia,. and are not as good as Rey Norteno that played Shakori recently. I did enjoy sampling a Kenyan Band Samba Mapangala http://www.myspace.com/sambamapangala that play Sunday and are quite dancable, merengue mostly, and have that wonderful lively Southern African sound. Unfortunately, they are not in the dance tent. Another interesting band that I sampled, Belleville Outfit http://www.myspace.com/thebellevilleoutfit is playing the dance tent Saturday. Out of Austin, the band does some nice country swing and some two step and should be quite dancable.
Now, if your heart is in stringband music, old timey, bluegrass, Celtic, I think that is the fest's strong suit, and you might be quite happy. I am not qualified to speak on these genres, though that won't stop me. I do enjoy The Duhks who are back again, and Solas, out of Boston, are arguably the best American Celtic band, with that wild mad drunk Irish fiddle and great vocal. Check it http://www.myspace.com/solasmyspacemusic . I like our local Haw River Rounders http://www.myspace.com/hawriverrounders who play the not oft heard but enjoyable jug band music. For the aged amongst you, you might remember the
jug band music era, kind of a psychedelic spin off of the folk revival of the early 60s. Whereas Peter, Paul and Mary were the clean cuts, bands like Jim Kweskin and Holy Modal Rounders were the preferred choice for those rolling their own, and morphed into some more swingable licks like Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks. I was but my older brothers 12 yo sidekick playing the jug in his band at Sings we had up in our room in the attic, where his high school buddies would hang and talk about existentialism, read Allen Ginsburg, and sing union songs. Twas not Maynard G. Krebs
Like Shakori this season, I don't think it is one of the better lineups for dancers. The contrarians will be happy with Wild Asparagus, The Horse Flies and Notorious, but the salseros only have Alex Torres and his Latin Orchestra at Lakeside on Sunday. Sampling this upstate NY band at http://www.myspace.com/alextorreslatinorchestra I hear some potentially good, not exceptional, dance music but they are only playing at Lakeside Sunday.
The dance situation at Lakeside went from bad to worse this spring. They had to move the tent area because of legitimate concerns re weather and safety, but they still had the timy dance space and the area was all muddy and had that trampled wet grass smell that is very attractive to house flies but kept this Edenite up at the gym and Eden Hall. I will ask Jennifer if they could put the salsa in the gym, but I guess the schedule is set. Alternatively, they could finally get the dancespace together at Lakeside which has been my campaign of 15 years. I did get Obama elected, but I have yet to get dance room at Lakeside.
LEAF did put one good dance band in the gym Saturday afternoon in Red Stick Ramblers http://www.myspace.com/theredstickramblers who play both cajun and Texas swing and will also do the late night in Eden Hall Saturday. I like the RSRs and often dj their beautiful waltz When the Sugar Cane is Tall one of those iconic songs about coming home when the harvest is in. Of course I am from Long Island, so I guess the harvest would be when the miniature golf season opens, but I can still relate.
10/31-11/1 Eastern Balboa Championships. This years Eastern Balboa Championships, Raleigh Oct. 30 to Nov. 1, will be bringing in a host of national instructors as well as the Asheville gypsy jazz band One Leg Up and our local Atomic Rhythm All Stars to the Holiday Inn, Brownstone.. The competition part will feature some of the top dancers in the country including our local organizers, Chris and Holly Owens. http://www.ibalboa. com
For the unformed, Balboa is a very uptempo swing dance with a small but enthusiastic following amongst some of the higher level lindy hoppers. Not an easy dance, but when you get a song at 200 bpm you don't want to be doing East Coast or Lindy. It is kind of like a cajun two step done in place, in English, fully clothed.
Instructors include: Nick Williams ,Sylvia Sykes, David Rehm , Kate Hedin, Bobby White, Kelly Arsenault, Kelly Arsenault, Mickey Fortenasce, Nelle Cherry, Adam Speen, Kylie Smith, Holly and Chris Owens.
I also note on the EBC blerb:Frankie’s Fun Fest Friday Night DJ Dance including disco, soul, 80s and 90s music. A definite departure from swing orthodoxy, Chris must be getting soft. Need to dust off my hustle shoes.
From I-40: Take exit 281/Miami Blvd. north (right off exit ramp). Go 3 miles. You will pass a Tire King and then a Shell gas station and traffic light at the corner of Lumley Rd. Great turnout for Waltz Dance Gumbo last week. I can still see the couples circling the room with Scarborough Faire playing those magical ethereal sounds. And some younger folk and farm animals showed up, which is always nice. Fourth Saturday is working out y'all, keep it up.
Next Smooth and Sultry West Coast Swing Dance Gumbo will be September 26.
The Wolfy J's are extending there Caj/Zydeco classes another three weeks and planning a ten or twelve week series of club style dancing. DJ Wolfy Jack is starting a new line of Zydeco wear promoted by Lindsay Lohan and Hamid Karzai.
We have some interesting stuff in Best Bets below and in the new!Quickie Rundown and now also at www.dancegumbo.com/bestbets
The Quickie Rundown (For those on the move, hang on to your cap and chinos.)
Sweet Honey in the Rock free concert 8/30 at Duke Gardens. Fiesta Del Pueblo is this weekend and Bull Durham Blues Fest next, but they are both weaker than in the past. Justin Robinson of the Carolina Chocolate Drops is doing a solo concert in Hillsborough 9/3. This is a new Thursday evening Weaver Street Market Hillsborough series. Lenny Terenzi's (of Mighty Lester) new and exciting band Hell Camino is opening up the Century Center for TSDS followed by The Lesters the following week at the Armory. September brings the Victorian Ball, Hoppin' John Festival, and Carrboro Music Festival.
More Cajun Zydeco Dance Lessons Aug. 31 to Sept. 21
Advanced Beginner to Intermediate- Some familiarity with the basic step requested. We will quickly review the basics and move on to some fancy ass stuff.
We had a good turnout of about 25 folks for the series of five lessons ending last week.
Many of the class want to do more so we will offer three more classes, taking off where the others ended.
These classes presumes you have some knowledge of the basic cajun and zydeco step. We will do a quick review, but move on to some spins, turns, cheats, pivots and jello casseroles.
This will be August 31 - break for Labor Day - Sept 14 and Sept 21 .
August 31 - Quick basic review caj/zyd, free spin and cheat zydeco, promenade cajun, corner turns
Sept 14 - Pivot couple turns in cajun and zydeco, fake turn zydeco, cajun waltz style
Sept 21- More intermediate moves, proper use of the Kleenex, History of Iredell County.
Now that we have the new website up, I will be including much of the info that is in GumboLine on the site. We have had Upcoming Dances and Ongoing Dances and are now adding Best Bets which I am copying below, but I will be updating it weekly as I do the Upcoming dances. The newsletter will function more as my occasional ranting and ravings.
We are having lots of technical difficulties with the fershluggener web. I would like to have more pix but don't quite have that protocol down, so the newsletter Best Bets is more pretty.

Thursday 8/27 John Howie Jr.Lead singer for $2 Pistols. One of my favorite singerswith great honkytonk sensability as part of the E. Main Summer Concert Series in the parking lot at ArtsCenter, Cat's Cradle, in Carrboro. 4:30 PM Free. John has yet to make it big in Nashville like Tift, but he is good enough and covers the old honkytonk classics like Earnest Tubb. Sounds a bit like Dwight Yoakum to me, got that croon. www.artscenterlive.org

Saturday and Sunday 8/29-8/30 La Fiesta Del Pueblo. Saturday and Sunday at the NC State Fairgounds, this is the 16th annual celebration of NC Latino culture. It is not as strong a lineup as in the past at least for the salseros but is always a nice community event. Saturday 12N-8P. Sunday 12N-6PM. $5 each day.
Saturday Main Stage
12:15 Grupo Barullo- Musica Regional Mexicana
1:30 Techno Caliente- Tecno Regional
3:15 Micky Mills- Steel drums, reggae
4:45 La Tropa de Tierra Caliente- Band music from Mexico
6:30 Orquesta Gardel
Sunday Main Stage
12:15 Los Chicos Malos
1:30 Grupo Sarengue - Salsa, Merengue, Bachatax, Boleros
For salseros, Orquesta GarDel is the only salsa band I see. They play a jazzy NYRican style Salsa and are goodly dancable if they keep the tempo reasonable. http://www.myspace.com/orquestagardel
Mickey Mills is a calypso style steel band and does some reggae. Samples at www.mickeymills.com
Bravo Norteno was at the Cary Latino festival. They do Norteno music, which is the accordion lead polkas of Northern Mexico. At Cary they did a long intro with this recorded promo that was ridiculously tacky sounded like La Ley on AM radio. http://www.myspace.com/grupobravonorteno
Salsera Susan hit the exit, but I waited hoping they would do a cumbia which they didn't and the rancheros were not nearly as good as Rey Norteno another Raleigh band. The Mexicanos in the audience did this dance where they just soloed jumping from one foot to the other like the Mexican hat dance, pretty silly looking stuff but everybody was quite festive.
When I was a youth and did my fruit tramp stint I would go to the farm worker dances and we would do a real polkas (pronounced pull-kas) and did some fine couple dancing. It was more a two step than a four step polka and you moved your arms like you were pumping water, if you've done that. I'll show you at a Gumbo, we've been known to slip in a nice ranchero
Grupo Barullo from Durham is a Cumbia band, Mexican style. Check out the sound at http://www.myspace.com/grupobarullo and on the lower page there are some nice videos of local cumbia dancers. This cumbiaero prefers Colombian style but any cumbia is OK with me.

La Tropa de Tierra Caliente is another Norteno Band. If you care for the genre, they sound a little better to me than Bravo on MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/latropadetierracaliente Save me a Polkas

Friday and Saturday 9/11 and 9/12 Bull Durham Blues Festival. BDBF is back in the old Historic Durham Athletic park Saturday only, with the Friday show at St. Josephs Hayti Heritage Center. They are starting Saturday at 1 PM. www.bulldurhamblues.org
For a festival that has had acts as good as the Neville Brothers, Marcia Ball, andlast year Taj Mahal and Rosie Ledet, this year seems to accelerate a declining trend- and for the first time in memory, nary a Zydeco Band in sight.
Eric Bibb is the headliner Friday night. I do like his folky funky style. Sounds a bit to me like Keb' Mo', definitely westcoast dancable, but I don't know that Hayti has dance space. Check it out at www.ericbibb.com He is joined by the not exciting Jon Shain Trio and Jasme Kelly
Saturday'sheadliner is Elvin Bishop who in his heydey was an OK white man's blues player, but nothing to pawn the farm for, and it is $45 advance. Trombone Shorty, The Lee Boys, Cool John Ferguson, Zac Harmon, Delta Moon, Roy Roberts, Homeade Jamz, and Valentino and the Piedmont Sheiks fill a big 11 hour schedule from 1 PM to Midnight. That is some pretty good talent but no showstopper.
Tix are $35 for Friday on line with the $ 3.12 oxymoronic "convenience fee" known at Gumbo central as the pickpocket fee. Saturdays fee is $45 plus the pickpocket. $10 more at the door sans le pickpocketteur. I have a rant forthcoming re the antics of the Ticketmaster and E-Tickets Taliban.

I counted 124 bands at 20 venues, yowsah. They do bring in national acts for that, Zydeco

What I love about this band, is that as long as they have played, from 1975 to today, Michael and the boys are always up for a performance. They were instrumental in leading the cajun revival back in the 70's and 25 albums later, they still carry the soul and heart of French Louisiana.
If you want some audio samples, Amazon has the most here
The response has been slow, so far. If you are interested, please sign up as we will be forced to cancel if we dont get sufficient attendence. All information and Paypal registration is at www.dabncegumbo.com

Dance Gumbo is now comfortably situated in the fourth Saturday slot with a white fedora sipping a pina colada, and our next dance is July 25.
We are also starting Cajun and Zydeco Dance Classes breginning July 27 (see details below).
Last Gumbo we had a big crowd, about 50, for Country Western Gumbo. It was $2 off with cowboy hats, though some of the hats looked more like Gilligan than cowboy.

The Cobo Brothers moved their Second Saturday Copa Night to Parizades in Durham. George's Garage has closed. I went to the first Parizade dance this week The decor is beautiful, and not faux elegance like many clubs trying to push upscale, just very open and pretty. the floor is tile but clean and dances better than Rumba or Carmen's though can't compare with Fred Astaire. The dance was slated at 10:30 but didn't get off until well about 11:20. I used to do a dance at Margaret's Cantina and learned that they give preference to the diners, especially when they realize that the dancers neither eat nor drink and use the rest rooms excessively, or at least I do, as it was a four shirt night.
Carolina Latin Social being Mike Delucia and Robert Zayas are bringing in the Clavekazi dance company from Washington DC for a workshop on Saturday August 1. There will be dances at Carmen's on Fri and Saturday night. www.carolinalatinsocial.com
Class details are in the Upcoming Dances section.
I am trying to organize another Sunday evening Salsa Dance now that the Rumba 54 is no more. That was a very nice low key dance at Rumba on Sunday. Everybody was there to dance and as opposed to the late night Fri and Sat club scene, the hormones are checked at the door. When you go clubbing, by about 1 AM, the utes are wanting to hook up, and even if I wasn't already permanently hooked, this abuelo salsero is not anybody's hookee concept, nohow. I just want to dance and not looking for a wrestling partner for the evening.
The Arts Center, Cats Cradle and local merchants are sponsoring the 300East Main Summer Concert Series which will be free concerts out on the asphalt at the Arts Center/ Cradle in Carrboro, on fourth thursdays. See Upcomings for specs on the 7/23 event featuring Embarassing Fruit and Free ElectricState.
They bill themselves as Indie Rock which is the latter day version of rock n' roll that you can't dance to, since about the time of REM. Back in my ute, you could dance to Martha and the Vandellas, even up through Michael Jackson, theTalking Heads, B52s and Sheryl Crow.
But the light contemporary stuff ain't got no riddim and the hard core industrial stuff that my daughter favored reminds me too much of dental surgery.
The paralel would be in Jazz when big band swing of the 40s, which was straight dance hall music, gave way to beebop which was cool jazz with beatniks and hepcats sitting in coffee houses in leotards and goatees with drooped eyelids listening to Bird, so cool.
Which wasn't half way different from me and my crew with drooped eyelids sitting in Ann Arbor in 1966 on some Owsley with the red light burning and eveybody singing along to Revolver- Relax your mind and float downstream.
Now that I am an obsessive dancer, I hardly listen to the Beatles. At the time I thought they were the second coming, but nowadays listening to something like Paperback Writer, it seems pretty pallid boring stuff. It was novel and clever, but who sits around listening to Seargeant Peppers anymore. Now James Brown and KC and the Sunshine, I spin at most dances.
When the Beatles were doing cute pieces like When I'm 64, Haight Ashbury kind of revived the dance hall ethos. The early Fillmore, Avalon Ballroom and Family Dog were never sit down events, and we would go hear the local bands, Big Brother, Airplane, Charlatans and dance that old tribal shuffle with the pulsating paisleys projected on the wall.
I commenced this rant about Indie Rock and these two bands playing the AC/Cradle parking lot, Fruit and Electric. Neither impress the Wolfus but John Howie Jr. is playing 8/27 as part of the same series and he is a consumate honky tonker that fronts the $2Pistols, one of my favorite bands. The pistols do wonderful two steppin music http://www.myspace.com/twodollarpistols though most every show I have been is with the stand on the floor with a beer and smoke crowd. I'd like to do a show with the Pistols and Junior Brown on a good dance floor some moon.
Cajun and Zydeco Dance Classes
It has been several years since Sandra and I have done this. Classes will be at Triangle Dance Studio for five consecutive Mondays (the only day available) from July 27 through August 24 from 7:45 to 9 PM. Classes will be as such:

August 10- Advanced Beginner- solo turns, have the hand movements down

Friday July 24. Carolina Theatre Benefit Concert for Food Bank of Eastern and Central North Carolina with Will McFarlane, Armand Lencheck, and Adrian Duke. Armand and Adrian join Will's band. If you like concerts, this should be fairly good. Armand and Will are good blues, rock guitarists and Adrian plays an excellent Nawlins' style piano. I expects no dancing. $15 advance, $21 door. 7:30 PM www.carolinatheatre.org
Friday July 24. Steve Howell & the Lonesome Teardrops at Papa Mojo's Roadhouse. Here is the blerb from PMR site:
"This band is one we are truly excited to bring into the Roadhouse! Combining top flight song witing with impeccable lineage (The Backsliders, Steve Wariner, Tanya Tucker, Colin Raye, Nantucket, PKM), Steve Howell and the Lonesome Teardrops bring their swinging brand of country music via Texas and Bakersfield. Bring your dancin shoes for this one - it will be ahonky-tonk night you won’t want to miss."
10-4 on the dancing shoes, I have no others, well maybe some galoshes. This New York Hillbilly is quite partial to honky tonk, the New York Times, and Kipper snacks. The names mentioned above are the right ones, but I could not google up any music samples. I found his old band the Backsliders and a great delta blues musician named Steve Howell and a Stephen Howell who died in 1845, but not this guy's sounds. So the promo sounds spot on, but no guarantees. He might do a two hour version of Three Blind Mice as far as I know. I think the Dead already did that.
Saturday July 25. Dance Gumbo. This month's theme is Cajun/Zydeco. As per the current protocol we will do half Cajun and Zydeco and the other half the classic minnestrone of swing, Latin, waltz, ballroom, et al. Triangle Dance Studio Lesson 8 PM Dance 8:45ish. $7. Friday July 31. Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys. One of the country's best cajun band, guaranteed to get you on the feet. We will be off in Norfolk and catch Steve on Saturday but Kathy and Mike Moesky and TRACZA helped put this together and Kathy says Mel promised some dance space at Papa Mojos. I hear tell the food is great. 9:30 $25 www.papamojosroadhouse.com Sample some music at www.mamouplayboys.com

Weekend July 31- August 2. Bayou Boogaloo. Road trip! Road trip! Norfolk, VA. Steve Riley, Dr. John, Terrance Simien, Radiators, Little Feat, Nathan and the Cha Chas, Marc Broussard. A must for Louisianophiles. Sandra and I have gone to this nice festival in the downtown Norfolk on the Harbor, for years, and this year our fellow Louisiana Club Crawlers are coming.

Down the Road A Piece
Saturday August 8. Beausoleil at the ArtsCenter. With Steve Riley playing the week prior at Papa Mojos, we have the worlds two best cajun bands in two weeks. Call cricket at 423-327-1995 or e at contradancingcricket@... Several Triangueleros are going, Becky C. to my recall
The theme for this month's Dance Gumbo is Country Western.
I Was Country Before It Was Cool.
That was Barbara Mandrell's take on the subject.
Growing up on the Long Island Prairie, I was neither country nor cool, and listened to more Frankie Valli and Sam the Sham than Johnny Cash, but in recent years I have come to love that fast two step and the likes of Dwight Yoakum, Vince Gill , Toby Keith, Trish Yearwood, Mary C. Carpenter, Leroy Parnell, Lyle Lovette, and many more.
Contemporary rock has largely lost its dancability from Motown and hustle days, and like modern jazz has become a cerebral thing. Country Western still is bread in the honkeytonks and dance halls and, though there is a fair amount of shmaltzy, crying in ones beer and God bless mother songs, not to mention hooray for us and wave the flag, you do get some great dance numbers.
I will spin these folks, but don't hang up the phone if Johnny Can't Two Step.
Firstly Wolfy Jack and Wolfy Sandra will get your Two Step greased up with a lesson at 8 PM, and the dance mix might be 25% two step.
50% of the mix will still be Classic Gumbo:Swing, Latin, Zydeco, Ballroom, Waltz, et al. So you will get your smattering of Merengue, Zydeco, west coast, salsa, waltz, bachata, fox trot and the dish drainer polska.
Of the 50% that will be Country Western music, along with a goodly few two steps we will do any number of excellent Country Western West Coast and East Coast Swing, Waltz, Cha Cha, etc.Actually, that's almost normal Gumbo, because I always do mine Country Western for some wonderful dance tunes.
I will be playing my favorite country album Sleepytown (samples here ) which is Flaco Jimenez, the great Tejano accordionist, on this album joined by Dwight Yoakum, BuckOwens and Leroy Parnell. We will have these folks on the Victrola Saturday along with some Sleepytown cuts.
Love This ALbum
TheMavericks, Trish Yearwood, and Toby Keith have some wonderful West Coast tunes. Mary C Carpenter has one of my favorite Cajun Two Steps with Saturday Night at the Twist and Shout ( Beausoleil backs the band).
$2 off with cowboy hat. $7 for the unhattered.
Two Step Lesson at 8. Dance 8:45.
Dance News
The Sunday Salsa Socials at Rumba 54 have ended. This was a nice dance and this Salsero hates to see it go. Betto and Carlos did an excellent DJ and it was a friendly crowd.
Like all dance crowds, you get about thirty people who each buy one bottle of water which barely covers the paper towel bill for the club. Club owners need people to run up a $10-20 bar tab per head, so the dancers, not known as high rollers, quickly become personas non grata.
Wes and Deb have done a long run with the Elks Club SwingDance. Elks is a nice venue but without elegant pretensions and $7 cocktails, and CDC went through a bunch of other clubs before they found the right match.
Also gone is the Lindy Loafers Thursday dance. I don't know the story behind that, but as somebody who has done Dance Gumbo now for 10 years, it is hard to keep the energy up for dances over the long haul.
Robertas Maleckis and Inga Sirkatie informed me that Dance Plus Studio in Durham has departed and they have moved their operation to the Elite Ballroom in Morrisville. They have two public Ballroom Dances scheduled monthly on 2nd and 4th Fridays at the studio and the specs are in Ongoing Dances. www.eliteballroomdance.com

Friday June 26 Big Medicine as part of the American Tobbacco Lawn Concerts at the ATHD in Downtown Durham 6-8 PM The band is local NC but has made a bit of a national stir appearing on Prairie Home Companion and at LEAF Festival. They have that nice bluegrass precision but don't go hogwild on the speed to put it more in the folk or old time school. The bassist was a former member of the Self-Righteous Brothers which has to be the coolest band name I have heard since the Avant Gardeners. www.americantobaccohistoricaldistrict.com

Friday June 26 Carnavalito . At Brightleaf Square Music in the Courtyard. I try not to miss a chance to bust some salsa and cumbia moves. Ricardo Granillo does some wonderful arrnagements, though they haven't changed much in 10 years, which is why I don't often seek them out, but after I haven't heard them for a few years, I am always surprised by how good they are. 7-9 PM Free. www.historicbrightleaf.com

I have many buds who support this event, and what could be more politically incorrect than to be down on the Eno River, but if I had any desire to be a human rotisserie, I would at least want to hear some new and novel sounds. Anyway, it is in the Best Bets, because nothing else is happening, but I will be on the home twenty sipping a Pina Colada and watching the ballgame with the AC turned up.
Robin and Linda WIlliams are an excellent folk group and they play LEAF regularly, and I love Chuck Brodsky's baseball ballads. Of the other 80 bands, there is little to excite me and it is almost all local. Orquesta Gardel is doing the only Latin Set of the entire festival. There is no cajun or zydeco. There are some dancers in Paso y Paso, Cane Creek and Apple Chill Cloggers, and Chuck Davis African Dancers.
Years ago there were always a few good national acts like Livingston Taylor and Balfa Toujours but Broilfest has really been off the last few years.
Down the Road A Piece
7/10 Sisters of Soul: Betty Lavette and Marcia Ball. North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh. 8PM $18. Long Tall Marcia Ball needs no intro and the Gumbo Gang will be out in force. NCMA is a great venue with plenty of room to picnic and dance space up by the stage.
Marcia
Betty Lavette is a classic soul singer who cut her first 45 in Detroit 1962 at the age of seventeen. She sang with the likes of Otis Redding, James Brown, Ben E. King, and Clyde McPhatter but never climbed very high in the pop charts. In the last 5 years she has had a great revival playing the roots circuit and was recently nominated for a Grammy. She does a heartache style blues that reminds me of Janis Joplin with shades of OtisRedding. She does a great stage show, I saw her at LEAF, more soul shaking than dance, but worth the admission, and Marcia is worth twice it. www.ncartmuseum.org

Dance Gumbo
Next New Improved ThemedDance Gumbo is June 27. We will be doing 50% the classic mix of swing, latin, waltz, ballroom, zydeco, etc. and then 50% of the nights theme. Methinks it will be Cajun/Zydeco but maybe something else. Mark the calendar and cancel the wake.
NOLDJ
Thank you to those who attended Night of the Living DJs 10. We tried to shrink the size from the Woodstockian NOLDJ 9 by giving faulty directions, and so people are still wandering around Sanford, but I think I overshot a bit, and missed my break even, and the kids will need to stay in the pawnshop for now.
We were giving it away before at $10 for four lessons, dozen demos, and elephantine hors but $20 at the door was a bit much, and like my friend Debbie of Wes was telling me, the recession has hit the dance community as everything else so we will return to affordable for our next NOLDJ tentatively set for October.
