Mk6:1-6
14thSunday in Ordinary Time
1stReading: Ezk 2:2-5
A spirit came upon me as he spoke and kept me standing and thenI heard him speak,
"Son of man, I am sending you to theIsraelites, to a people who have rebelled against me; they and theirfathers have sinned against me to this day. Now I am sending you tothese defiant and stubborn people to tell them `this is the LordYahweh's word.'
So, whether they listen ornot this set of rebels will know there is a prophet among them.
2ndReading: 2 Cor 12:7-10
However, I better give up lest somebody think more of me thanwhat is seen in me or heard from me. Lest I become proud after somany and extraordinary revelations, I was given a thorn in my flesh,a true messenger of Satan, to slap me in the face. Three times Iprayed to the Lord that it leave me, but he answered, "My grace isenough for you; my great strength is revealed in weakness."
Gladly, then, will I boast of my weakness that the strength ofChrist may be mine. So I rejoice when I suffer infirmities, humiliations, want, persecutions: all for Christ! For when I am weak, then I am strong.
Gospel:Mk 6:1-6
Jesus returned to his own country, and his disciples followedhim. When the Sabbath came, he began teaching in the synagogue, andmost of those who heard him were astonished. They commented, "Howdid this come to him? What kind of wisdom has been given to him thathe also performs such miracles? Who is he but the carpenter, the sonof Mary and the brother of James and Joset and Judas and Simon? Hissisters, too, are they not here among us?" So they took offense athim.
And Jesus said to them, "Prophets aredespised only in their own country, among their relatives and intheir own family." And he could work no miracles there, but onlyhealed a few sick people by laying his hands on them. Jesus himselfwas astounded at their unbelief.
REFLECTION
Jesus' experience of rejection by his countrymen wouldforeshadow the events that would take place in Jerusalem at the endof His earthly ministry. Jesus would experience betrayal by oneapostle and denial by another. He would be mocked by His ownpeople who would cry out for His crucifixion. All this He wouldendure so that we might have life and have it to the full.
We are never alone in our sufferings. Should we everexperience the anguish of being ridiculed or put down by family orfriends, we are never alone. The Lord Jesus stands with us inour times of trial, giving us the grace we need to bear patientlywith our suffering, never stooping to the same level as those whowould cause us pain. Through the Holy Eucharist we participatein the saving death and glorious resurrection of the Lord. Maythe grace of the Holy Eucharist bring us forbearance and courage aswe carry our crosses.
PRAYER
"LordJesus, you are the fulfillment of all our hopes and desires. YourSpirit brings us grace, truth, life, and freedom. Fill me with thejoy of the gospel and inflame my heart with love and zeal for you andfor your will."
Psalm123:1-4
1To thee I lift up my eyes, O thou who art enthroned in the heavens!
2 Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of theirmaster, as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, soour eyes look to the LORD our God, till he have mercy upon us.
3Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us, for we have had morethan enough of contempt.
4 Too long our soul has been sated withthe scorn of those who are at ease, the contempt of the proud.
