Several months ago I was able to use the Dongle to transmit and receive. Now I
can only receive, the transmit function is not available. This problem is
occurring on both my PC and MAC platforms. I checked the repeater where I
registered my call and my callsign and IP address are still in the log. I tried
reinstalling the software but it didn't solve the problem. Any suggestions?

Hi Bob.

You are registered as "W4BQD D". Since you used the "D" in the eigth position,
you have to use the "D" in the eigth position with the DV Dongle. Note that it
is recommended that you use a space " " character in the eigth position when you
register.

I put the D in the eighth position and everything works OK.

Hi Robin,

I want to thank you for an awesome job on this application. I am enjoying the DV
Dongle very much. The application works well. Some "R2D2" is reported on my
transmissions on rare occasion, but the majority is crystal cler.

I have a few ideas that I think would be neat, and I wonder if these are
possible. I would like to think of my DVTool software as a dispatch console like
big /\/\ systems use. I wonder if any of these features are possible???

1 - "Your Call" Call Sign targeting. I would like to be able to call individule
call signs of people I might be looking for wherever they are (like the radios
do).

2 - "Scan" with 2 levels of priority. I would like to be able to set up a number
of different gateways and repeaters to scan (first come/first serve) with two
levels of priority overide. Priority one could be your selected TX gateway, and
priority 2 your secondary selection (radio button next to item in list?) I like
the way commercial radios work for this, but I would hope there is enough buffer
to prevent punching big holes in the audio. I would think there would be no
holes as it is data and not a frequency sample.

3 - "Focus Volume" so you could set up a low level volume on non-priority
traffic and boost volume on priority selections.

4 - "Message Text" included in the history screen. I watch the History screen
more than the Connection screen, but I miss the messages. I do see them in the
streaming screen, but it is too small and scrolls by fast at times.

5 - The ability to see the data being sent while watching the history screen (in
another window below the history windo).

6 - Full time TX and maybe even RX audio level meters? It is nice to know you or
the other station are not producing good levels by set meters (bar meters).

7 - Ability to pull down an instant list of stored "Your Call" user preset
memories. This goes for the "Your Call" Target idea. It would be nice to have
saved calls you often would use ready to go with a drop down.

I think that would give the commercial radio systems a real run for the money.
:D I especially like the priority scan idea. Right now it is like a radio that
can only hear one channel at a time. Very basic, and it works, but we could
really enjoy some cool features on this system.

Thanks for all the great work you do!

I to am having this problem with DVTool 2.0 beta 3

It has worked flawlessly for the past few days.

Today it started with “run on transmit” after PPT unclicked. The dos box shows “q uxxx” streams with no “transmit complete” .

The only way to clear is to kill the program.

Monitoring the gateway dplus.log shows continuous streams from dongle. After killing dvtool, the stream stops and my call session logged off.

This is intermittent and was only able to reproduce it several times on different gateways (W7MOT and N7CL). I’ve not had the problem for the past few hours.

From time to time I note that the dongle contines to transmit even when I try to stop. The remedy is to kill the program. Unless I am doing something wrong which in my case is possible. 73 Bob

Hi Robin, Group,

I can report that this release works fine on Windows 7, as does the FTDI driver
instalation for the Dongle itself.
Previous V2 releases did have a few 'bugs', but W7 seems to like this version
fine.
(From a friend that doesn't belong to any 'groups'.)

Exelent work Robin. (And no more phone calls from my friend!)

Had some trouble this morning - a "hurry up and connect for a test" action.
Beta 2 had the connection bars greyed out. My first thought was - "Oh yeah -
Beta 3 was published". A quick port over for beta 3 and got the same result.
Then noticed on the command window that the server connection was failing.
After a few minutes of reviewing procedures, went back to computer and
magically, the server was available. So now I'm using Beta 3.

My local D-STAR repeater (W4OVH B) was under maintenance and not showing up in
my favorites list (obviously they hadn't reconnected it to the Internet yet).
Connected to another local DSTAR repeater (N4USI B) OK. Went to favorites list
to reorder those two repeaters (W4OVH B, N4USI B) to the top of the list (used
the "move up" button) it appeared to work. My repeater showed up in that list
so tried to connect - Beta 3 crashed (I think it was off the main server list
but still in my favorites list at this point). Restarted, deselected
"favorites" and checked overall server listing - and found that my local
repeater (W4OVH B) was off the main list again . Selected favorites again and
noted that W4OVH B was off the list but the other repeater (N4USI) had not been
changed in the listing order(It was still showing REF001,N4USI,WS4VA). Made one
connection (to REF001) and then disconnected and went back to favorites listing
and placed REF001 at the bottom of my favorites listing (used the "move down"
button). then selected/checked "favorites". Checked the order and it is now
correctly displaying the order in which I had selected them (N4USI, WS4VA,
REF001).
Just another fun Saturday morning for your info.

Hi, - I am /MM in Turkey at the moment and have just started using the dongle, -
quite successfully, - using the 2.0 beta 3 DV Tools which works well usually.

Naturally I want to monitor my mates back at home on gb7fk and sometimes I can
leave dvtools running in the background and any traffic will come through nicely
(frightening me sometimes!) but sometimes "missed keepalive" comes up and runs
for about 12 times and then the frames are dropped and in double-quick time I am
disconnected.

The problem may be a bug, - but the same happens with DVTools.jar, - or I guess
it is more likely that it is because I am using a wi-fi link between my boat and
the marina office and perhaps the bandwidth becomes too narrow?

When this happens, my internet monitor tells me I am still connected to the
internet and I can still google satisfactorily so the link is still there.

I mention this because I imagine this sort of feedback is required....perhaps
others have had the same problem.....or am I missing something other than
bandwidth?

Thanks for a superb and interesting system, Denis Pepper, g0slj - usually in
Folkestone!

I have only been using the dongle for a short while and mainly for listening, -
which I have habitually been doing on REF013 with the module set to *. Should I
hear a transmission to which I want to reply, I have to go to HISTORY to find
out which module the station is using, before returning to CONNECTION to change
the parameters.

It seems to me it would be useful if, in the CONNECTION pane, instead of the tx
station's details immediately leaving the screen as soon as he ceases tx,
details of the last tx could be left (greyed out) on the pane.

Hi All,

It seems the problem is a little more widespread as kept dropping me off when listening to REF001 on Saturday night using DVTool 2.0beta3 and though did not drop me off using DVTool.jar (beta3) was not passing traffic at times.
Seemed the usage of REF001 was high in terms of repeaters/DV Dongles connected though seemed to work normally when I shifted to a USA W4 repeater to follow activity. Today getting a similar problem with REF005 and DVTool 2.0beta3, so suspected was activity at my service provider AOL, but maybe not so.

I agree, it would be nice to see who the "last heard" station was,
without having to go to the History. Sometimes I have DVTool in the
background, hear something, and the station disappears, just as I find DVTool.

I have to watch the Hitory window because many stations break in and I need to
see who is there. But the user message is not in the History. My suggestion is
to include the user message in the History window so all the info is in one
place with a history log.

The problem, at least as I see it, is one of screen real estate. The
current DVtool has a fixed window size (why?) that can't be changed.
Adding another frame for the user message would be difficult. One thing
that I *really* appreciate on the new DVtool is having the transmit
button available on all of the tabs and not just the connection tab as
it is on the JRE version.

I like the 2beta3 version of DVtool so much better that I removed the
"old" DVtool from my system. Great job, Robin.

Hi Bob. I don't quite follow your description below. Are you using two or
three PC's? Is it the Dell you are having problems on?

When you plug in the DV Dongle on the problematic PC, does the green light
slowly pulse?

You might try reinstalling the FTDI device drivers.

Hi (didn't get the name).

I see you are registered and show up on at least one gateway (W4DOC). There
might be an issue with your target gateway syncing with the trust server.

Try connecting to W4DOC module A and see if you can transmit.

Hi Jeff.

I'm experiencing the exact same thing on my MBP. The network is still active so
I ssh in and shut things down.

It looks like there is a bug in the FTDI driver that completely shuts down the

this and hope to have a workaround soon.

Robin,

Thank you. I will be patient for your next MAC release. BTW: The beta 3 release for Windows works great on Windows 7 Ultimate RTM.

Thanks for your hard work and contributions to all of us.

Hi Jeff.

I'm experiencing the exact same thing on my MBP. The network is still active so I ssh in and shut things down.

It looks like there is a bug in the FTDI driver that completely shuts down the entire USB subsystem on the Mac. I'm trying to figure out what condition causes this and hope to have a workaround soon.

Thanks for the reply, The name is Doug. I am finally able to use my DV dongle.
Apparently you still have to wait for the gateways to sync your registration
even if you are connecting to the gateway you are registered on. Step 11 of the
D-Star Self Registration at www.dstargateway.org states that you can start using
the system as soon as you complete your registration.

Step one of the Self Registration site suggests that you contact the repeater
administrator if there is no registration URL listed for the repeater you want
to register with. The "Repeaters List" on D-StarUsers.org does not have URL info
for most of the gateways I wanted to register with. Perhaps the gateway admin
should be required to list an a-mail address if the organization does not have a
website. Additionally, the "Gateway Enabled" line is currently reported as "Yes"
or "No". It should be "No","Yes OPEN" or "YES Membership Required". Two days
after I submitted my first request, I found out that I was not approved because
my request did not include a membership application and first year club dues.

It would be nice if the D-Star Gateway registration software would e-mail a
confirmation of your registration request and include an e-mail address for the
gateway administrator. This would give the registrant a place to go with
questions.

I know that there are many different web sites and applications involved in this
registration process, hopefully these suggestions will be read and at least
considered by those who produce the applications or administer the sites.

Thanks

Doug

Can the software not be made into an open source project so others that have
software development skills can contribute to it?

It seems to me that a lot of these features could all be added without a couple
of months if the project were open sourced and some online CVS was used

Pardon me if I have this wrong, but you appear to be trying to register
at more than one gateway. This will gum up the works if you do. I was
testing our local repeater before it had been placed on line and
couldn't get to it. So I tried to register at another gateway.
Fortunately I was reading some FAQs at the same time and was able to get
the second attempt canceled. But you do need to go back to the
registration page (for your original registration) and fill out the
personal information part before you can gain access to any gateway. So
go back to the <callsign>-dot-dynalias-dot-org page at which you
registered; log in and fill out the personal information required and
then I think you will be "good to go".

Sorry, Robin for the confusion. I'll chalk this one up to a "Short between the
headset", hi hi. Somehow the com port assignment moved up to com 12 and I
didn't catch it. All is well. Now, that is with the last full release. When I
try DV-Tool Version 2.0 Beta 3, I get an error message "No DV Dongle found.
Plug in your device........."
As the text scrolls during the execution of DV Tool, the last line says
"Found 0 FTDI devices"
Is there a way to manually designate the com port tht DV Dongle is using as I
did with the earlier relese?

Hope I didn't confuse you again.
