Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern Railroad Corporation (DM&E) acquired the Winona, Minnesota to Rapid City, South Dakota rail line of Chicago and North Western (C&NW) in 1986. In 1995, DM&E acquired the Colony Line from C&NW successor Union Pacific Railroad (UP). The Colony Line is an ex-C&NW route that stretches from a point in extreme northeastern Wyoming, through Belle Fourche, Sturgis and Rapid City, South Dakota, to Chadron and Crawford in northwest Nebraska.
