Checked out Brian's operation today.  His trees are great!  I'm planning to support him.  Jimmy Dorsey has already bought one of his trees.  Check out his operation at the lower entrance to IHM (closer to North Druid Hills) in front of the detention pond. He also has "Charlie Brown" trees for $25 which are adorable!

Robbery

3245 Chamblee Dunwoody Rd.  – A woman was walking out of a shop with her wallet in her hand when a male subject snatched her wallet and ran away.  Several people in the area, including her husband, chased him down and held him until police arrived and arrested him.  He is in the Dekalb County Jail charged with Robbery.

5550 Peachtree Industrial ( Chamblee Plaza )  Two men walked into a restaurant and demanded money.  One snatched a donation box and both ran.

Prowler

We have received two reports of a suspected burglar at the Jefferson Circle Apts. on Johnson Ferry Rd.   One woman saw a black male wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt on her balcony with a crowbar.  Another woman in the same area heard a noise at her front door and found that someone had just knocked out her peep hole.  There have also been a few vehicles broken into in this area in the past few months.  Residents in this complex please call 911 if you see any suspicious activity.

Moron of the Week

A man was arrested for passing a hand drawn $100 bill at a local restaurant after eating a meal, drinking several beers and finishing with a glass of Crown Royal. His alcohol bill was $55.00. He said he was homeless from East Point and came to Chamblee because there is nowhere to eat in East Point

Crime Prevention Tip

Burglar alarms:   If you have an alarm system in your home you should activate it both when you are leaving in the daytime and before you go to sleep at night.  Most burglars will flee immediately upon hearing an alarm.   With a burglar alarm at a business one option you may consider is a silent alarm that calls police but doesn’t activate a siren in the business.  Officer love these alarms because it gives us a great chance to catch a burglar in the act.  This is a great option for those businesses located in the city because we generally have an excellent response time to calls, especially at night when call volume is lower.  Most burglars are repeat offenders so apprehending one in the act can prevent dozens or maybe hundreds of other burglaries.  What occurs in our typical burglary is a glass door or window is smashed, an alarm goes off, and the burglar snatches one or two items in a panic before making a getaway.  If every business in the city had a silent burglar alarm we could take a lot more burglars off the street.

Hey y'all -- our nanny lives in a condo complex in Tucker, just inside the Gwinnett line.  A retriever or laborador-mix dog has recently appeared on her doorstep (and that of the neighbors); she thinks he was dumped/abandoned.  She and her neighbors have been feeding him and looking out for him as much as they can, but cannot take him in because they have other pets.  She's called a couple of rescue groups, but they are full up. Someone in the complex had also called animal control, but they came out and the dog, understandably, hid.

Does anyone know of a group that will go and pick up a dog?  Or, let someone bring them a dog?  From what I hear, he sounds sweet.  Any ideas/suggestions you have would be welcome.

Thank you!

Jim Verrecchia (Society of St. Vincent Depaul) sent me the following e-mail.  I thought I would post it to see if there are resources that we do not know of:

I have been aware of a client at Christ the King parish who is in need of having his electric wheel chair repaired ($3800).  He has a full time job but cannot swing that amount of money in one hit.    His insurance will cover half the costs and the Conference is willing to pick up the tab – but is trying to research to learn if there are any agencies or groups that help with this kind of thing.  I said I would pass the word around and see if I learn anything….  If you can let me know any ideas you may have – I'd appreciate it.

If anyone has resources that can help in this situation, please e-mail Jim directly at JVerrecchia@....

Thank you and Happy Holidays!

Cross Keys now has a foundation.
The below information is from the site.

http://www.crosskeysfoundation.org/index.php

The Cross Keys Foundation (CKF) was organized in 2009 to provide organizational,
logistical, and fundraising support designed to enhance the educational
experience of the students enrolled in the Cross Keys High School attendance
zone. Presently, this zone includes: Cross Keys HS, Sequoyah MS, Oakcliff ES,
Cary Reynolds ES, Dresden ES, Montclair ES, and Woodward ES (collectively, the
"Zone").

The Foundation is a partnership between our Board and The DeKalb County Public
Schools Foundation (DCPSF). While our Board provides the leadership and energy
for the development and deployment of volunteer and financial resources for the
Zone, the DCPSF manages the non-profit status of our efforts via their
beneficiary tax exempt 501(3)(c) corporation.

The unique characteristics of our Zone include high diversity, high numbers of
English Language Learners (ELL students) and high poverty rates. As a result,
CKF focuses on filling gaps in volunteer and financial resources that
characterize our Zone's population.

Simply put, our mission is to provide every learning opportunity possible to the
young people in our population group.

Dan Magee, Parks/Rec Citizens Advisory Council (District 2), posted this to the Civic Association Network listserv.  I think it gives info that we can use in thinking about how to re-envision the Shallowford corridor or Shallowford/I-85 Neighborhood Center.  Beth Nathan

Well done, easy to read research summary, "How Neighborhoods Can Reduce the Risk of Obesity". I especially like the part about making sure school playgrounds are available to the public.

http://www.rand.org/pubs/research_briefs/RB9267/index1.html

http://www.rand.org/pubs/research_briefs/2007/RAND_RB9267.pdf

Key findings:
•Neighborhood parks promote exercise, especially among residents who live within a mile of a park.
•School playgrounds are an underused resource for weekend exercise.
•Having four or more different types of businesses in a neighborhood can increase the number of walking trips among residents.
•In neighborhoods where residents are willing to help each other, children are less likely to be overweight

Obesity is the most serious public health problem confronting America today. Obese and overweight Americans face elevated risks of chronic illness and disability. As the obesity epidemic worsens, researchers are zeroing in on environmental factors that may contribute to the problem or, conversely, help to prevent it. It is increasingly clear that neighborhoods play an important role in stimulating exercise and reducing the risk of obesity. To shed more light on this connection, a series of RAND studies has examined how neighborhood characteristics affect physical activity.

**Proximity to Parks Matters
Neighborhood parks play an important role in promoting exercise. In the first systematic evaluation of neighborhood use of public parks, a RAND team led by researcher Deborah Cohen assessed activities in 12 Los Angeles public parks. The researchers surveyed park users as well as a sample of the local population. They found that living near a park was associated with engaging in more exercise. This may not be because people were exercising at the park — in fact, the most frequent activity observed in the park was sitting. However, more than three-quarters of users lived a mile or less from the park (see Figure 1), and most walked to the park from their homes, thus getting exercise by walking there and back. People — especially adults and seniors — were more likely to exercise at parks that had areas for moderate exercise, such as tracks, walking paths, and trails. Having a park near one's home was more important than the size of the park itself — people were more likely to use their neighborhood park even if a larger park was just a few miles away. The researchers also noted that, in all age groups, males were much more likely than females to use neighborhood parks.

Girls pose a particular concern because their physical activity is known to decrease as they progress through adolescence, raising their risk of weight gain. A related study by Cohen and colleagues examined park use and physical activity among adolescent girls. The study examined exercise patterns among more than 1,500 sixth-grade girls in six U.S. cities. It also counted the average number of public parks within a one-mile radius of the girls' homes. The study found that adolescent girls who live within one-half mile of a public park are more physically active than other girls. Higher levels of physical activity were seen among girls who lived near small parks, playgrounds, walking paths, and running tracks.

**School Playgrounds Are an Underused Resource
School playgrounds that are accessible to children on weekends may also promote exercise. Focusing on the same sample of sixth-grade girls, researchers visited 407 school playgrounds within a half-mile radius of the homes of the girls. Results showed that 66 percent of the schools were unlocked on weekends, although the percentage of available school facilities varied substantially among different cities (see the table). But only 57 percent of schools both were unlocked and had accessible facilities, such as playgrounds, athletic fields, basketball courts, and paved playing areas. The majority of locked and inaccessible playgrounds were in poor and minority neighborhoods.

Although the study did not find a relationship between school accessibility and increased weekend physical activity rates, the number of locked schools was associated with significantly higher body mass index for girls (body mass index is a mathematical formula representing weight relative to height that can be used to determine whether a person is overweight or underweight). The fact that girls with a higher body mass index tended to live in areas with locked schools could signal that the girls live in a more stressful, high-crime area, which would create incentives for them to remain indoors, or in a neighborhood with access to stores that sell unhealthy food. Stress itself is associated with obesity due to higher secretions of the stress hormone cortisol, which increases fat deposits.

**Business Diversity and Four-Way Intersections Promote City Walking
Other neighborhood features also influence levels of physical activity. A RAND study led by Rob Boer examined the relationship between neighborhood features and walking trips in ten U.S. cities. The analysis found that business diversity was associated with walking trips. Having four or more different types of businesses in a neighborhood significantly increased the number of walking trips among residents. This is probably true because of added convenience: Residents are able to accomplish multiple routine errands in a single walking trip and thus may drive less. A greater number of four-way intersections was also associated with more walking. The effects of housing density were mixed. Neighborhood age, availability of parking, and block length were not significantly associated with walking.

**Neighborhood Social Bonds Can Reduce the Risk of Obesity
Aside from their physical configuration, neighborhoods can influence body weight and the risk of obesity in other ways. Cohen and colleagues also studied the effect of neighborhood social cohesion on the weight gain of adolescents. They found that children who lived in close-knit neighborhoods were less likely to be overweight than children who did not. Researchers analyzed responses from 3,000 households including 807 adolescents in 65 neighborhoods in the Los Angeles area. Close-knit neighborhoods were defined as those with the greatest degree of "collective efficacy," a measurement that characterizes social cohesion. Such neighborhoods contain adults who children look up to, people willing to help their neighbors, neighbors who get along, adults who take active steps to ensure that children are safe, neighbors who share the same values, adults who will intervene if a youngster is defacing property with graffiti, and adults who will scold a child showing disrespect. In neighborhoods that lacked these features, adolescents were more likely to be overweight, even after controlling for other factors (see Figure 2). Although the analysis did not identify causes, the researchers speculated that close-knit neighborhoods might be associated with lower levels of stress and could also promote increased physical activity by making neighborhoods feel safer and more "walkable."

Implications for Communities and Researchers
Taken collectively, these studies underscore that neighborhoods exert a powerful effect on residents' physical activity and thus that neighborhood design should be considered a public health issue. Communities would profit by taking steps to create and maintain public facilities and spaces that are known to promote exercise.

These steps can include
•factoring exercise considerations into zoning and design decisions
•making parks a higher priority, particularly ones with amenities such as running tracks or walking paths, which are relatively inexpensive to create
•ensuring that school playgrounds are accessible to children on weekends.

PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO LOOK OVER THIS INFORMATION

‘Tis the season to be jolly, but it also the season to be wary of Burglars, Thieves, Pickpockets, and other Holiday Grinches.

Unfortunately burglars view the holiday season a little differently…. For them, it is a time of opportunity to burglarize your home for cash, credit cards, and gifts.

Protecting Your Home. Here are some strategies that will help you.

Be extra cautious about locking doors and windows when you leave.

Don’t openly display your Christmas tree and gifts in the front window

Don’t leave your outside light burning 24 hours a day. Don’t have piled up News papers mail or flyers on the door or mail box.

If you are away advise your  Block Captain or Chairman of your Neighborhood Watch 678-704-9141.

Also call your DPD so they can fill out an away form and patrol your house 770-455-1000.

Thank you and all be safe..

Tomorrow (Wednesday) recyclables will NOT be collected.  Instead, the sanitation dept. will honor their regular Thurs. & Friday schedule.  For the folks in Appling, that's yard waste & regular garbage.  So, please don't put out your blue bins & leave them at the curb over the holiday!

Hope everyone has a lovely Thanksgiving with family & friends!

Howdy Neighbors:

This Friday is another home football game as the Golden Lions won last  week to  advance to the State Quarterfinals.

The opposing team is from Peach County High School in Fort Valley.  We can expect another large crowd and congestion will be heavy before and after the game.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Hello All!

I'm an absent homeowner (Pioneer Court), and frequent "lurker" and
happy to remain on the DECA distro since I may very well seek employment
in the ATL area, after my military career is over (My family is a short
4.5 hr drive away in NE TN)

I am in the military, currently deployed (based in Kuwait -- "Home
station" of my unit is Ft. Lewis in the Seattle-Tacoma area)

I have to say that I find being an "innactive" member of the community
incredibly rewarding -- I am a pet owner ("rescue" dog -- some of you
remember Max - pictures attached) and aside from the infrequent
"dust-up" between members I am frequently deeply touched with the way
community members care for one another, and even for "transient" members
of the community such as this dog that Jerry has gone out of his way to
"include" by trying to reunite him with his owner, and/or find a new
home for.

From lost animals, to community pic-nics, I'm sure that there are other
equally caring "pockets" of community among the greater, relatively
fractured "community" of the Atlanta-Metro area, but I doubt that there
are any better.

I'd just like to say thanks to Jerry, and everyone else in the
community who has taken anywhere from a few moments, or several hours
(or even days) to contribute to the overall well-being of the community
since I have been part of it (Nov, 2005).

I'm 2nd from left in the last picture . .

Thank You All,
God Bless,
- Pete Sulkowski

Unfortunately I think you are beating your head against a brick wall.  When my grandson was at Cary Reynolds, I, like you, followed the "path", as did the majority of parents.  Unfortunately there were parents who chose to go in the driveway for entering buses and exiting buses and cars constantly.  I begged; I went to Doraville Police Department who, truly did not have the time or resources to have someone there constantly, but did sporadically have a visible presence; parents were stationed to keep cars from doing this; memos went out to the children to take home; etc. and while for a day or two things went as they should, it was right back to the same old thing.  On several mornings I saw students almost get hit by cars who were doing this and finally came to the conclusion that a child getting hit was the only way these parents were going to get the message.  I even went so far as to one morning park my car and got in the face of some of these parents, who just laughed.  This year, while Henderson Middle School is a nightmare dropping off and picking up students, I have to say at least the parents do follow the rules.  There are just some people who think the rules don't apply to them and until they have some problems because of their lack of consideration, hopefully not a tragedy but their cars damaged or something, they won't get it; sad but true.

David-

We will put up with what we have to, this time on ONE account!! STOP the kids and parents  (PARENTS BEING THE WORST ABUSERS) from using the Shell turnaround in the morning.  Yesterday was morning twelve that I was almost hit (cut off by a parent rushing to school).

I have spoken with Tony Stevens several times on this matter and although he is very pleasant and seems helpful, he has inadvertantly placed the matter in MY hands to be handled.  I cannot get license plates on MY way to school, not to mention they are too fast to catch!!! The police are unhelpful and although you are constantly telling the kids/parents to stop using the Shell it is not working.  I will admit some days are worse than others but all in all...they need to use the designated carpool route.  I am a carpooler and parent at Oakcliff theme school (a public school) and ALL of the parents follow the rules of carpool that are laid out in the handbook.  Why is it we can follow the rules and your parents and kids cannot?

This matter will become the responsibility of  SPX and it's students when someone gets hit.  Please get through to the PARENTS too.  I pray that doesn not happen.  A cut through from Frontier Woods is not the answer, the correct carpool route is.  I will be happy to address your faculty and student body on this matter  until then.

Good luck on your game~

FRIDAY NIGHT NOVEMBER 20  STATE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF GAME

The second round of the State football playoffs pit the St. Pius X Golden Lions vs. North Hall  at 7:30 PM.

This game is expected to attract a very large crowd which will draw from both schools and traffic is expected to be heavy from 5:30 pm until game time and of course afterwards.   The St. Pius shuttle service will be running as usual from the Highwoods parking deck on the access road. The North Hall fans are trying to get as many fans as possible in their bus caravan but we can expect that there will a lot of fans who will be driving their own cars and may park in the neighborhood streets surrounding the campus.

For more information please refer to the St. Pius X website spx.org.

Although the message is still the same, I realize the date of the game was last week.

Good morning,

I am in need of a recommendation of a good roofing company. I have a major project, including raising the pitch, and am currently seeking bids.

During these hard times, I'm sure there are excellent masters of roofing available.

Thanks!
