My neighbor had his truck ransacked on Sunday Evening. Nothing was taken. The truck was not locked. He is in construction work and has many valuable tools. He dodged a bullet. This is an opportunity to remind all of you of some things that you can do to prevent crime. This comes at an opportune time because the NATIONAL NIGHT OUT is Tuesday, August 1 This event has been observed in all states for many years. This is a time to get to know neighbors. The idea is to remind every one of the things that can be done to prevent crime. Communication is much improved with the advent of the computers with e-mail. We have all seen mail from caring neighbors that tell us of suspected crime in DECA. The things to be reminded of to prevent crime are:
1. Do not leave anything on your carport you don't want stolen i.e. lawn mower, bicycles
2. Lock cars and trucks at all times. Good idea to keep valuables out of sight.
3. Lock home doors and windows even when you are at home.
4. Get a sign that says you have a security system. The burglar will go to the home that does not have a sign.
5. Leave lights burning when away from home, preferable on a timer so they will turn off at bedtime.
6. Have a vehicle in the carport when you are away from home, borrow one from a neighbor.
