Gah! And here I was excited about finally getting involed with the
Conspiracy finally (especially at a place less than 3 blocks away
from me) -- Unfortunately, it looks like I'm going to be stuck here
in North Carolina on business until late Saturday night (hopefully
*not* Sunday morning, what with the incoming weather).
But this sounded very cool, and I would love to take part in the
next opportunity -- Don't vote me off the Conspiracy island yet! :-)

We can be there no matter what the weather (it's about a half-mile
walk). Unless I hear otherwise, I'll there (tall, thin, pony tail,
bundled agains the cold) with my wife, Monica.

Hey guys, sorry I haven't been replying as much as I should have.
Anywho, I'm gonna try to come down and hang out on Saturday, but it's really
dependent
on the weather. If it's snowing too hard, we'll probably have to bail. Sorry. :(
Just a reminder about the Conspiracy's gathering this
Saturday, Jan. 22, at 3 p.m. at Whitlow's on Wilson in

I'm digging the Northern Virginia Journal's comic-book
coverage. It's a two-page spread (tabloid size) every

mainstream stuff (last week, the focus was on Elektra
cause of the movie, this week it's Peter David's
return to The Hulk), but they do cover some other
stuff. For example, thay have a brief article this
week on Tom Hart's Hutch Owen.
Hmmm....if we play our cards right, maybe WE can get

on Saturday!

OK, let's go down the street to Whitlow's. It
shouldn't be crowded at that time, so we can eat,
drink and talk comics at our leisure.
Recap:
Whitlow's in Arlington
Sat., Jan. 22, 3 p.m.
Hey,
I found out last night that Dremo's doesn't open till 5 pm on
saturdays so we might want to try and find a new place that is
open earlier. I am not as familiar with that areas bars or cafes so
I'm up for anything.

Hey there! I was wondering why I never got DC
Conspiracy e-mails... well, I'd forgotten I even HAD a
Yahoo account, much less that I'd sent this address to
the Group!
Guess I should introduce myself. My name is Danielle
Corsetto and I'm located in West Virginia, right on
the border of Maryland. I do a webcomic called "Girls
With Slingshots" (http://www.girlswithslingshots.com)
and have been doing comics and comic strips for a few
years now.
I wish I could meet you guys on the 22nd - I'd love an
excuse to get outta West Bygod Virginia! - but I'll
actually be having a show in New York that weekend.
I'll also be at the Big Apple convention that weekend
(yeah, between the con and the art show, I'm not going
to be getting ANY sleep!!). But I hope you guys have a
great time :)
Oh, I'm also doing some work for Rafer's Plastic Farm
this year. The story is just priceless...
Later, gators.

Let's make it Dr. Dremo's at 3 p.m. on Sat., Jan. 22.
(Provided they're open at 3; they should be, right?)
It's good great beer and lots of elbow room. Plus
they're very friendly to alternative art!
M.
Jake, can't make it this weekend. I'll be
watching...Pingu. (Actually, it's kinda neat,
especially after a few drinks.)
I think it would be great to meet up that Saturday.
I vote for Dremo's because my friend is a bartender there. But I
don't know here schedule so she might not be there. So it
dosen't really mater to me. but Dremos does have that wierd
table surounded by a metal booth. so we could sit in there and
pretend to be a evil secret society, or some such
thing(wheeeeee).
I am disapointed to hear that the V for Vendeta movie is going
the Germany winning world war II angle. It seems like a cheap
cop out. Their too afraid to talk ill of the British government, which
was a lot of the point of the comic. But any way.
Evan Keeling
A friend of mine sent along something on that to me today. I don't have
it now, but in the article, there's a reference to how it will take
place in an alternate future where Germany won WWII . . . kinda takes
some of the bite out of it.

I'd be up for it! I have another event scheduled at
6:30 that same day, so mid-afternoon (say around 3)
would work just fine for me.

Sounds good to me. And thanks about all the info about the
comics shops. Got all my work for issue one scanned this weekend. You know,
32 pieces of Bristol board looks really impressive all stacked on top of each
other.
Did everyone see the poster on superherohype.com for the
forthcoming V for Vendetta movie? I felt kinda so-so about the Wachowski
brothers working on it, but at least it’ll have a great budget. I don’t
know if anyone else has read this, but it’s probably my second favorite
Alan Moore work (Watchmen being the first). Anyway, just thought I’d
share…
Don't forget Atomic Books in Baltimore, but only if you're familiar
with the strange neighborhood in Hampden that they've moved to.
They're comitted to the alternatives.

Right across the street from me. I'm all over that.
There are plenty of other options at Clarendon and/or Courthouse Metros.
Dremo's is good. There's also Whitlow's for meals and beers at
Clarendon, also the ever-popular Hard Times, and local favorite Mexicali
Blues; at Courthourse, Rhodeside for upscale pub food, Pho 75 for a
truly local experience, Guajllio for great TexMex, Gua-rapo for great
food and the "scene" -- and tons others. Any requests, I got an answer.
My local opinion, someplace with a bar before popular hour.
Four-o'clock. Someone toss out a preference. Or brunch or lunch . . .

Would anyone be up for getting together Saturday, Jan.
22, in the afternoon? I think someplace in Arlington
near a Metro stop would be best. Maybe we can meet at
the Common Grounds coffee shop or Dr. Dreamo's
Taphouse.

At the risk of sounding like a shill, I can't say enough good things
about Big Planet Comics (http://www.bigplanetcomics.com/). Their
Bethesda store is apparently the flagship store, and as my friend said
when enticing me there, is the "clean, well-lighted comic shop."
Trades, monthlies, foreign, special orders, the occasional signing --
they have or can get it all, and their people are generally great
folks, plugged into the local scene, and alarmingly knowledgeable. The
Georgetown shop (which I was lucky enough to work near for a couple
years) is in an old used-book store -- so, though the layout's
counter-intuitive, adds to the fun of exploring. Their online indy
affiliate Mars Imports (http://www.marsimports.com/) is run by their
Vienna store manager, and though I've yet to take advantage of it,
looks to be quite a resource.
When I first moved here, I lived in Crystal City and relied on Geppi's
Comics (yes, that Steve Geppi). Never the friendliest, it was a
mainstay. Don't even know if they're still there.
Looking forward to hearing more about the comic. I love a good
conspiracy (no pun intended).

Well, make sure it's the Northern Virginia Journal (or its Maryland
counterpart) for the comics coverage (and incidentally, some pretty good
daily comic strips) -- not the Express. Not that there's anything wrong
with the Express, it's how I keep up with what the hip kids are
watching, listening to, and drinking these days.
Journal generally has a spread on comics every Wednesday. Occasionally a
day before or after.
Big fan of all things Big Planet. My office used to be a couple blocks
up from them in Georgetown. Good times.

the newspaper in my face, but now I'll grab a copy! Is
there a certain day they run the comics-related stuff?
Speaking of Big Planet Comics, do you read their
newsletter? I love the column where they rip on old DC
covers! Hilarious stuff! My favorite cover: Lois Lane
in a kissing booth, with Superman, Green Arrow, Batman

The local Journal newspapers (formerly an afternoon daily, now reinventing
itself as a free
local commuter paper) has a regular comics feature on Wednesday.
Today's (http://www.jrnl.com/nvafront.cfm page 18 of the PDF) has the best
graphic
novels of the year, written by one of the regular contributors (who also works
for Big
Planet). Last week's was best monthly series by the other regular; other recent
pieces have
been on Brian K. Vaughn and obsessive coverage of Identity Crisis.
There's sometimes a syndicated article or two -- the obits on Eisner and Freas
this week,
which I think cut into the usual snarky commentary on the week's new releases.
OK, so I think I've accidentally reported at least one of these messages as spam
. . . are
these posts supposed to be coming to my email, or do they only exist here?
Obviously,
new to this whole groups thing.
My name's Bram. My wife and I live in Arlington, and together we produce Raised
By
Squirrels (http://www.raisedbysquirrels.com/) on a spectacularly irregular
basis. We leave
'em for the taking at local Big Planet Comics and the occasional Tysons con; for
SPX, we
put together a package of all issues to date and left them on the "free table"
and handed
them out to folks we bought from. Issue 1.5 has been sitting on the corner of
the desk,
about halfway done, for at least a month now.
Currently, I got a lot of reading to do. On loan from a friend, I'm working my
way through
Essential Doctor Strange. Due back to the library soon, volumes 2 and 3 of Y,
The Last
Man. I plunged headfirst into that big new Bone collection a few weeks back but
got
distracted after book one. I also stockpile trades for some unspecified later
time, and that
includes a bunch of stuff from SPX and a couple Sin Citys that I need to read
before the
movie. What's on everyone else's reading list?
HI,
My name is Evan Keeling I am 28 and a life long
resident of Capitol Hill.
I don't have anything published yet or a website. But
I have a few projects in the working, I should be
getting some examples up on the web, hopefuly soon.
I met Mett and Carol at The SPX, where I got to check
out some of their amazing work.
Talk to everyone soon.

Hi y'all - my name's Jeff Skinner. Matt sent me some info about this
group 'cos I wrote him after seeing the piece about Mr. Big in the
City Paper.
I'm 35, and live by myself in DC. I work full time but I've been an
inveterate doodler for years; these days I'm trying to hone those
skills so I can be a halfway decent cartoonist. I'm glad to see Matt
is trying to put something together here for DC folks - the only
groups I know of are in Savannah and Vancouver and it's damn hard to
get out to anything they do. So I'm excited to see these things happen
here.
I don't have a whole lot of work up on the Web just yet, but you can
see the stuff I have done over at www.geocities.com/mylo_tennyson if
you're interested.

Saw the invite on the TCJ board and think it'd be great to have more
local cartoonists to be in contact with----for all the reasons you
mentioned in your post.
I saw that City Paper profile---thought it was great.
Congratulations---hope it's been good for you.
I live in Falls Church and have been focusing my efforts on putting
together a book of illustrated stories---in the very near future, I
plan on sending out samples. (Some of the samples are on my
website.)

My introduction:
I'm Rafer Roberts and I do the comic PLASTIC FARM, the 8th issue of which should
be
hitting stores in about two weeks. Folks can check it out here:

I currently live in the shithole town of Hagerstown, MD, which is about an hour
and a half
outside of DC, with my wife Nan and our four cats. I'm looking forward to the
possibility of
the group book signings, especially if they are held in a bar. :)

Hi, Folks
I've created this group for small-press comic creators and the like
(other illustrators and writers, animators, fanziners, etc.) in the
Washington, D.C., area. We can talk about our craft, post upcoming
events (such as local comic-books shows, museum exhibits, lectures,
etc.) or seek advice from each other. I was hoping we could also host
two or three get-togethers a year to do some comic jams, or sell some
wares, or just have a few beers and talk shop. (One thing I'd like to
do this summer is perhaps take a road trip to the Frazetta museum in
Pa.)
Anyway, feel free to post a message introducing yourself and your
interests!
Cheers!
