This was done for the TRDL R3 Jam, the subject being DC's Manhunter. You
can find the jam on the R3 Forum here
<http://www.thirdraildesignlab.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=27>.

I've disliked all previous iterations of DC's Manhunter over the years
with the burning fire of a thousand limp candles. However, the female
Manhunter presented with a low-key, duo chromatic bodysuit with gnarly
tech details and was assisted by beautiful cover art from Jae Lee, which
makes everything better. I really like how 'top heavy' the design is,
with the scaled armor not descending below the shoulders and bracers.

Please enjoy...

Click through to read more about it and see process pics and the like,
if you enjoy such behind-the-scenes business.
Artists, come join us on R3 and submit to the jams!

Well first off, contrary to early reports, the show's creators have confirmed
that Robin and Kid Flash will be Dick Grayson and Wally West, not Tim Drake and
Bart Allen. The writers stated the reasons for this are that their show takes
place in a timeline where Superman first appeared 10 years ago and Batman 9
years ago. Thus there isn't room in the timeline for second or third generation
sidekicks, although strangely they have DCs new Aqualad and have said Garth will
appear. Superboy is said to be literally 16 weeks old, he is still Kon El.

Secondly the show has been declared to be (officially) Earth 16 of the DC
Multiverse and as such the comic that will be launched with the show will be "in
continuity" for DC.

There still hasn't been an announcement of the premiere date, the only thing
I've been able to find is that it should premiere in November.

I'll be back with more when I have it,

Azrael

I think it's okay to say you aren't familiar with Black Canary and don't know
much about her, but you can't say "there isn't too much on that woman."

* Her mom was a member of the Justice Society and she considers its members as
extended family. She herself went on to join a more recent incarnation of the
JSA
* While she was born with her "Canary Cry" (a sonic scream, more or less) she
actually prefers hand-to-hand combat
* She trained in various forms of fighting skills under such tutors as Wildcat
and Sensei Otomo and is one of the top seven martial artists in the DCU
* Black Canary has been a long-time member of the Justice League and recently
served as Chairwoman

* She's a core operative of the Birds of Prey, serving as field leader for
covert missions
* She has significant ties to people throughout the DCU, not just through the
Justice Society and Justice League, but as an extended member of the Bat Family,
not to mention her long-standing relationship with Green Arrow and his
arrow-slinging family

This is just the tip of the iceberg! I'd suggest reading any of the Birds of
Prey series (especially early ones or those written by Gail Simone) or the
recent Green Arrow/Black Canary series. I also thought she was portrayed well on
Justice League Unlimited.

I admit I wasn't a huge fan of hers but think her character has been strongly
developed over the last 10 years or so.

Learn how Superman, Wonder Woman and Scooby Doo will appear on Batman: The Brave
and the Bold!
Batman: The Brave and the Bold has done some pretty insane episodes so far,
including the one where Bats was split into three people. But producers James
Tucker and Michael Jelenic tell io9 the weirdest episodes are yet to come.
Spoilers for upcoming episodes below...
In fact, they told us in an exclusive interview, the third season has the
weirdest episodes of all. And the very final episode of the show will be the
absolute strangest of all time, they promise. But before we get there, they say
there's tons of insanity in store for us.
The show comes back tomorrow night with a Starro two-parter, which already
appeared on some on-demand systems and other online places due to an error on
Cartoon Network's part. Including that two-parter, there are 15 more episodes to
season two which haven't aired yet. And after that, there are 13 episodes of
season three, making for a total of 28 episodes we'll be seeing over the next
year and a half. Then the show will have completed its full 65-episode order,
and it'll come to an end.

In the meantime, here's what Tucker and Jelenic told us to expect in upcoming
episodes — including some stuff that's never been reported before:
One upcoming episode begins with a teaser in which the heroes are playing the
supervillains at baseball. They're not fighting, and there's nothing major at
stake — they're just having a friendly baseball game. And it sounds like the
segment ends with Batman hitting a home run.
Superman will show up on his own in Brave and the Bold's own version of the
first Superman/Batman team-up from the comics. (I think they meant the Silver
Age version, not the recent Jeph Loeb version.) And then later, there'll be a
"Trinity" episode featuring Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman teaming up to face
some greater threat. ("Thank Geoff Johns" for getting the show the rights to
include Superman and Wonder Woman, Tucker says.)

There's a "Flash legacy" episode which features Silver Age Flash Barry Allen,
plus the Golden Age Flash and Kid Flash — and they're facing Professor Zoom,
who's voiced by John Wesley Shipp, who played the Flash in the short-lived
live-action TV show. According to Jelenic, Shipp "got into it" voicing the
villain, and it was super cool.

The Outsiders show up again, but this time they'll be wearing the costumes they
wear in the original issues of Batman and the Outsiders, from the 1980s.
Also turning up soon: The Doom Patrol! And Batgirl, aka Barbara Gordon, will be
making her first appearance as well.
And then there's the bizarre episode you may already have heard hints about,
called "Bat-Mite Presents: Batman's Strangest Cases." The show's usual version
of Batman won't appear in this episode at all, and instead it'll just be three
exceedingly weird segments featuring wildly different fictional versions of
Batman. The episode's opening teaser (which'll be longer than usual) will be a
recreation of the famous Mad Magazine parody strip, "Bat Boy and Rubin":

And then the second segment will be a re-creation of the 1960s Japanese
"Bat-Manga" comics which lifted characters and situations from the TV series and
took them in strange directions, as shown in Chip Kidd and Jiro Kuwata's
Bat-Manga!: The Secret History Of Batman In Japan. Kidd was one of a legion of
collaborators who helped the Brave and the Bold team pull this episode together.

And then the third segment will be a note-perfect recreation of the Hanna
Barbera Batman cartoon and its crossovers with Scooby Doo. And Scooby himself
will appear! Everything will be the same as the classic Hanna Barbera Batman
cartoons, except the music, promise Tucker and Jenenic. This will be an episode
that many fans will love, but the kids watching may be a tad confused by the
absence of the regular Batman. "It'll probably be polarizing," says Tucker. "I'm
proud of it. A lot of work went into it."

As you've probably already gleaned, the silliness and craziness of Silver Age
comics is a huge influence on Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Tucker says
Jelenic knew nothing about comics when they started doing this show together,
but now Jelenic has learned way too much about the weirder aspects of older
comics. "I think I helped create a monster," Tucker jokes. Now Jelenic will show
up with an old comic in which Batman has been turned into a skunk, and ask if
they can do that in an episode.

"There are websites like Superdickery.com," adds Jelenic. "I'll go to James and
say, how can we turn this into an episode?" He says he loves to "take those
wacky Silver Age concepts and play them seriously, let the humor speak for
itself. You don't have to goose the humor. If you take an absurd concept and try
to be wacky with it, it's not going to play well. But if you play it straight
[it'll work perfectly.]" The key, adds Tucker, is that Batman always takes the
situation totally seriously.
As for Tucker, he really wants a chance to retell some of the formative Batman
stories he read in his youth — like the story of Joe Chill, the killer of
Batman's parents, who was an important character in the comics for a long time
but has since been removed from continuity. "It was a way to show a different
aspect of Batman, that still was important to the comics, but was also
entertaining and enlightening to people who just know a little about Batman,"
says Tucker.
And the great thing about this show is that you can go anywhere you want to with
the basic concept, adds Tucker:

DC Comics Names New Editor in Chief
By DAVE ITZKOFF

It’s not uncommon to see super-powered champions switch allegiances from one
side to the other in the pages of their comic-book adventures, and so it goes
for the people who create and publish their stories. On Monday, DC Comics, the
longtime home of heroes like Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, said that it had
named as its new editor in chief Robert Harras, a veteran editor there who had
also spent five years as the editor in chief of rival Marvel Comics, the
publisher of Spider-Man, the Hulk and Iron Man.
DC, a unit of Warner Brothers Entertainment and Time Warner, said in a statement
that Mr. Harras will oversee editorial for its comics as well as MAD Magazine
and its Vertigo imprint, and will work from the company’s New York offices.
(Last week DC announced it would move its operations that focus on feature
films, television, video games and other media to California from New York.)
Mr. Harras most recently served as group editor of DC Comics’ collected
editions
division, which publishes popular and lucrative reprints of recent comics series
as well as longtime best-sellers like “Watchmen.” At Marvel, where Mr.
Harras
was editor in chief from 1995 to 2000, he helped steer its editorial operations
during a challenging period when the company was digging itself out of
bankruptcy. He also oversaw story lines like “The Spider-Clone Saga,” a
notorious Spider-Man narrative that endured far longer than many readers’
interest in it.
DC Comics said Mr. Harras was not immediately available for comment. Jim Lee,
the DC Comics co-publisher, and a veteran illustrator and writer at DC and
Marvel, said in a statement, “Bob Harras’s personal and creative integrity
is
respected and renowned throughout the comic book industry. As an editor, he
provides invaluable insight into storytelling and character.”

Just saw the new animated feature Superman/Batman Apocalypse which followed
pretty accurately the origin story of what I understand to be the next to the
last Supergirl.  While I enjoyed the adaptationI was amazed at how ugly the
animation was.

Also, I wanted to ask, how did the current Supergirl come into being since both
this one and the current one are named Kara and both are Superman's cousin?

If you read deeper, you will read that DC also cut the number of story pages for
these books.

I saw an advertisement for a subscription service $10.00 a month for unlimited
electronic comics. Now that's a deal. It's somewhat like Netflix taking on
Blockbuster.

I'm not sure that any members of the Justice League monitor this group.
(Besides, it's hard to tell who is still a member of these days, or who (if
anyone) still reads the book these days, considering how poorly it's been

There's no credit on the illustration, but I'll assume it's from Shane Davis.
One of the comments mentioned how odd his thorax looks. I'll expand on that:
it looks like he has his Superman logo painted on his chest. An undershirt
doesn't look like that.
One of the other comments mentioned apparently DC was going for the Anakin
Skywalker look. That seems apropos.
Thanks,

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101028/ap_en_ot/us_new_superman

The big "S" is still on his chest, but the new Superman coming to the shelves of
book stores next week is not exactly the chipper and bright-eyed optimist of
lore.

Instead, the kid from Krypton featured in "Superman: Earth One" that was
released to comic book shops Wednesday and due in other book stores on Tuesday,
sports a hoodie, a brooding brow and fashion sense that would not put him out of
place in hipster lairs from Brooklyn to Seattle.

And that, said Dan DiDio, senior vice president and executive editor at DC
Comics is just what the company was aiming for when it asked J. Michael
Straczynski, himself a noted comic book writer who currently helms the company's
flagship monthly "Superman" title.

"We always knew that we wanted to do a real, contemporary interpretation of
Superman," he told The Associated Press. "And what we did is we reached out to
Joe Straczynski — Joe is probably one of the biggest Superman fans out there."

DiDio said DC augured the retelling as a way to reach out to buyers not just in
comic book stores but in other book stores, too — fans of books and series
like
"Twilight" or Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy of crime novels.

"In this particular case what we did is we looked at the format," he said,
adding that DC has been "showing great strides in really strong improvement in
sales in the book store market place, and what we wanted to do was to create an
original graphic novel featuring our most prominent character that we felt
captured a contemporary tone and really was built with the bookstore market in
mind."

The graphic novel was illustrated by Shane Davis. And while it features the
jet-black hair — sans curly lock atop the forehead — and piercing stare that
Clark Kent/Superman has had since his creation in the 1930s, Davis' art reflects
a more modern bent with narrow pants and ties and the ubiquitous hoodie.

The work draws upon the Superman mythology but recreates it for a contemporary
audience with a 20-year-old Clark Kent who's unsure how to use his
super-strength, super-smarts and just plain super abilities as he makes his way
through a grittier, more realistic Metropolis trying to find not just a job but
meaning and purpose.

DiDio and DC are pleased with the transformation, noting that demand for the
work has been so great that the book has already gone back to the press for a
wider run.

"When we were building this book we had a lot of things in mind. We were looking
at what fiction was popular at the time ... and since we are in the periodical
business, and we want to be in the bookstore business, what better continuing
character should be in that market but Superman?" he asked.

"But we needed to make him hip, moody and sexy in order to really appeal to who
are really wanting to read novels with our characters," DiDio added.
Given the predicted demand, DC is already planning a similar treatment for
Batman, which will be written by Geoff Johns, a writer who was named DC Comics'
chief creative officer in February.

"And we're already looking ... at future volumes of 'Superman: Earth One," DiDio
said.

A role playing game based around the hit show "Smallville" set in the show`s
tenth season we will be brining all the elements of the shows rich history as
well as delveing into plots from the world of DC comics.

Clark has emerged from his darkest hour, only to find the path to his destiny
blocked by ghosts from the past -- shadows in the present tempting Clark toward
the darkness at every turn. Despite insurmountable odds, is Clark strong enough
to step into the light and claim his rightful place as Earth's mightiest
protector?

After a fateful kiss, Lois Lane realized that the two men she had been torn
between Clark Kent and Metropolis' heroic Blur -- were one and the same. Having
finally found redemption and a second chance at love, Chloe Sullivan and Oliver
Queen, a.k.a. the Green Arrow, were ripped apart. Chloe was forced to painfully
listen as the love of her life, Oliver, was abducted by mysterious assailants
during his attempt to help Clark defeat Zod's Army. And Tess Mercer, heir to the
late Lex Luthor empire and double agent for the now-defunct government
organization Checkmate, was fatally burned at Zod's hand in an attempt to right
past wrongs. As Tess flatlined in Metropolis General Hospital, she was visited
by a shrouded, elderly woman. The granny's motives...still unknown.

When Chloe vanishes, Oliver Queen will be forced to look long and hard at the
circumstances behind it. Blaming himself for her disappearance, Oliver will
begin exploring accountability for all his past actions, good and bad -- what
great lengths will Oliver go to in order to bring his lost love back home?

Having risked her own life in an attempt to become accountable for her own
misguided actions, no one is more surprised than Tess Mercer when she wakes,
alive and well, in a seemingly abandoned medical facility. But what secrets lie
in wait in the recesses of "Cadmus Labs"? And how much is Tess willing to give
up to seize her second chance at redemption?

The call for Wonder Woman's book to be renumbered had a different origin. Fans
thought it unrepresentative for Superman's book, Action Comics, or for Batman's
book, Detective Comics, to have issue numbers in the 800s when Wonder Woman's
book was labeled with issues in the 40s. There were good arguments either way,
but DC said enough fans wrote in asking for the renumbering that they went ahead
and did it. I doubt if they sold one extra book because of it, though.

I went back to check something in the original announcement you posted and noted
"Invincible Iron Man #500.1" among the first month of these "point-one" titles.

Now, since the CURRENT Invincible Iron Man is in the low 30's, issue-wise (I
last got issue 31, which was dated Dec. 2010), I'm assuming this is another
title that's going to get the number bumped-up to try and make more money off
readers?!? (It use to be that having multiple restarts was the way to make
money with numerous "Issue No. 1!" hype, but that doesn't get the buyers
anymore, I guess.)

Now, I know both Captain America (Marvel) and Wonder Woman (DC) have played this
gimmick before, but are there any other titles that have decided to add up all
the individual series to get a big new anniversary issue?

Legendary Pictures is getting into the comic book business, creating a
publishing imprint called Legendary Comics and appointing veteran comic
editor Bob Schreck to the role of editor-in-chief.

The imprint plans to publish four to six graphic novels in the print
format as well as the growing comics format of digital distribution.

The genres of the stories will hit squarely in the “fandom demographic”
according to the company. Legendary Pictures is known for co-financing
and co-producing many of Warner Bros.’ genre and geek-oriented movies,
including 300, The Dark Knight and Clash of the Titans to name a few.
Its chairman and CEO, Thomas Tull, is also known for having fanboy
tendencies.

Schreck starts the job this week and plans to release its first book the
first half of next year.

The books will be looked as potential translations for the film and TV
arena, and Schreck will work with Kathy Vrabeck, president of Legendary
Digital, to help make that move.

Schreck comes to Legendary from IDW Publishing but is perhaps best known
for his decade long stint at DC Comics, where he worked starting 1990.
He also founded Oni Press and worked at Dark Horse Comics.

Wasn't there a story where the earth's sky was seeded with green
Kryptonite, preventing Superboy from visiting the future for a while.
It was resolved by Color Kid changing the color of the Kryptonite to
blue, which was supposed to be harmless to Superboy.

Some of that stuff you mention has already happened according to Wikipedia.

I was a Liberal Atrs major, not a Science major, in college, but is air really
"invisible"? Is it just made up of stuff that doesn't really register on the
spectrum, and therefore not a "color"?

(And they've already done Color Kid going from male to female, didn't they?
Wasn't that in a Legion of Substitute-Heroes special when Keith Griffin refused

Kevin,
It's probably more important where the character's name is the books name, or
the team's name is the book's name. Over the decades, Adventure Comics has been
the home for a lot of characters. When you pick up the Superman book, though,
you expect to see Superman in it.
Thanks,

I believe DC had been doing something similar to that with Adventure Comics (I
bought issue No. 7 earlier this year, which had a lighter "510" under the darker
"7", plus inside it was labeled "Adventure Comics #7/Adventure Comics #510",
which may be a bit confusing to some, but honors the past of the title while
still showing that it's a new series). I'm not sure if I buy-in to the
"changing-the-issue-number-wipes-out-the-history-of-the-team" bit, but that's
another story.

I guess we'll have to see how its handled with Iron Man, but I'm not keen on the
idea of suddenly jumping issue numbers to make it seem more important if, in
fact, your compnay previously decided "Screw the history of the issue number and
just start over with a new issue No. 1 . . . so what if we've already had three
or four previos runs with 'No. 1' on it!!"

(And does this also mean that Avengers may suddenly renumber the series once
again if they can add up various issue runs to get a big new imprtant-sounding
anniversary number? I guess we'll have to wait and see on that, too, someday.)

--- In Marvel_Comics_Universe@yahoogroups.com, tsull2121@... wrote:

maybe theyre doing the same thing with iron man?

You'll Believe a Man Can Take a Sabbatical: J. Michael Straczynski Leaves
Monthly Comics

J. Michael Straczynski has announced via DC's The Source that he will no longer
script his monthly Superman and Wonder Woman titles, citing the need to
fast-track sequels to the successful Superman: Earth One graphic novel. The
departure will cut short Straczynski's work on the "Grounded" storyline halfway
through its run, which is slated to continue for a year. Vertigo's iZombie and
Cinderella writer Chris Roberson will take over Superman with issue #707, and
The Darkness writer Phil Hester will script Wonder Woman from issue #605. Both
writers will be working from Straczynski's story notes and outlines so that
in-progress storylines will reach their pre-determined conclusions.

Stracyznski had previously cited health problems as the reason behind delays on
his Superman run, including pneumonia and bronchitis. The writer also says he
will take a one-to-five-year "sabbatical" from writing monthly comics to focus
on work in the original graphic novel format.

"I took on the Superman and Wonder Woman monthlies on the theory that I'd have
time to script the full 12 issues before bounding back onto Earth One. But when
the huge numbers started coming in on Earth One, and the need to fastrack the
next volumes became evident in order to keep the momentum going, I knew there
was no way in god's green earth that I could write that and the monthlies
simultaneously. Since DC has had my notes and outlines from day one on both
titles, so they're still my stories, it makes sense to let Chris and Phil keep
going from the story beats I've set up. I'll dive in on occasion as needed for
important story points. It's still my story, I'm involved in both books, and
they're going to continue in the direction we set up. I'm looking forward to
seeing what Chris and Phil have in store."

"Meanwhile, I'm taking full advantage of the situation to take a one- to
five-year sabbatical from writing monthlies in order to go exclusively into
writing graphic novels like Superman Earth One and Samaritan X, along with the
occasional high-visibility minseries. I think that's where the business is
going, and creatively, limited series and graphic novels have always been my
strong suit in that they let me tell cohesive stories with a beginning, middle
and end. They can also be written and drawn before anything is ever announced or
solicited, as was the case with Earth One, which has been one of the greatest
and most creatively rewarding experience of my career. At some point I'm sure
I'll come back to monthlies - it's just too darn much fun - but for the next one
to five years, it's strictly GNs and miniseries, with Superman Earth One being
the first priority, followed by Samaritan X."

With respect to the Earth One sequel, it's too early to announce any specifics,
but DC Co-Publisher Dan DiDio expressed enthusiasm for the work of Straczynski
and artist Shane Davis, and the importance on maintaining the creative team.

"We were so pleased with the response to SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE that it made sense
to fast-track a sequel, and we definitely wanted to go back to the same amazing
creative team. We knew we had to make some creative adjustments to the two
ongoing books Joe was involved with to ensure his stories reached their natural
conclusion and to also guarantee their arrival in stores in a timely manner. We
firmly believe this plan is the strongest solution – it guarantees a fitting
conclusion to two of the most historic and important storylines to ever involve
Superman and Wonder Woman, while locking in another epic SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE
adventure."

Superman: Earth One debuted at #1 on The New York Times' bestseller list for
graphic novels.
