Description

Hi, my name is Leila. When I got the bends in May 2005, I would have liked to have found a group like this. So I started one. The purpose is to assist in supporting DCS sufferers during their recovery; to spread awareness of what DCS is; to remove the stigma attached to DCS; and to further research in the field of diving medicine. I welcome you to join the group so you can share your own experience, and learn from others, about what happens after his/her HBOT (decompression chamber, 'pot') treatment. We can also inform each other about relevant articles, resources, conferences, events and web links. This group is not about in any way judging or stigmatizing victims. Everyone is welcome.

All divers know what DCS is and how to avoid it. But once you have it, there is surprisingly little helpful information or sharing of experience. The situation is further complicated by the distinction between 'deserved' and 'undeserved' hits. With 'deserved' hits, there is often ostracism by one's peers for breaking the 'rules'. With 'undeserved' hits (especially where no PFO is present), there is a fear that the same thing could unexpectedly happen again even when following divetables conservatively.

I hope this group can contribute to overcoming this silence, helping people understand DCS better, and have it be considered no differently than any other sports injury. Together, we can support, encourage and learn from each other. Your input could make a very big difference to another person. I also hope some original ideas and research proposals come out of this working group. We can be on the cutting edge of this field.

BTW, please note when you sign up that there are different options for receiving emails. You can receive all postings, special postings, or no postings to your email adress. You can also change your preference at any time under pref.

I look forward to having you join me in this group. Thank you,Leila
