Has anybody here ever had to deal with 'podnet k setreni'? I have come
across it in various situations where an administrative body is called
upon to look into a possible breach of the law. Just can't find any
translation that sounds plausible. Here's a typical example:

MZP v prubehu zari zrusilo dve rozhodnuti odboru zivotniho prostredi
MHMP ze zari 2000 a kvetna 2001, jimiz byl udelen souhlas ke stavbe

Hello, Melvyn!
In your context, I would suggest something like "to file a request for
the initiation of investigation" although I feel it is a bit clumsy.

Toto je spise soudni termin, ale neco na nem je. Myslim, ze mnou poptavany

'exceptions and other reports', coz jsou oznameni, ktera obdrzi klient od

Hello there,

the Czech word "kraj" as an administrative unit of the country is usually
translated as 'region' into English. I wonder if 'province' would actually
be a more suitable rendition. Do you see any pros or cons for either option?

Yes, I do - you are trying to go against a well-established terminology.
Regardless whether province is better or not ( I can't see why it should
be), that might raise confusion of end users and complaints of Czech
clients (that kind who knows only 3 to 4 English words, but checks these
very carefully). in other words, you are asking for trouble.

There is also the problem that according to anglophone custom,
"province" is used for certain countries but not for others. For
example, we usually talk about provinces of France, Canada and China,
but regions of Russia, Spain and some other countries. There is no
hard, fast rule, but I would say that any country smaller than a US
state would usually not be discussed as having provinces, so the Czech
Republic would not qualify based on that criterion. When Jirka
suggested "province" for "kraj", my mind immediately filled with images
of China, Thailand and Burma. You could probably translate "kraj" as
"prefecture" also, but that would make it sound like you were in Japan.

Personally, I think that, realistically, "kraj" should be translated as
"county", as such areas are called even in English-speaking countries
that have no nobility. However, Michael doesn't like that one, because
he thinks that if you talk about a county in Europe, there should be a
count lurking around.

If you *were* going to use 'county' in reference to the Czech Rep, I
think it would be a better fit for 'okres' (and would also have the
advantage of eliminating the confusion between 'district' = 'okres' and
'district' = 'obvod'). FWIW.

According to http://dictionary.law.com, there appears to be a
difference.

collateral
1) n. property pledged to secure a loan or debt, usually funds or
personal property as distinguished from real property (but technically
collateral can include real estate). 2) adj. referring to something
that is going on at the same time parallel to the main issue in a
lawsuit or controversy which may affect the outcome of the case, such
as adoption of a new federal regulation or a criminal trial of one of
the parties. Example: John has filed a lawsuit in New Mexico, where he
lives, to establish that he is not the father of Betty's child, while
Betty has filed for divorce in Colorado asking that John pay child
support for the child. The New Mexico paternity suit is collateral to
the Colorado divorce action.

security interest
n. generic term for the property rights of a lender or creditor whose
right to collect a debt is secured by property.

Welche Hexe schaut sich welchen Swatch-Uhrenknopf an?

Three switched witches watch three Swatch watch switches. Which switched
witch watches which Swatch watch switch.

I have deleted by an accident an .ini item from Trados WB standard
settings, and I need your help in finding it.

If you go (WB at standard setting): WB - Options - Translation
memory options... - Tools - DTD Settings, you should see a dialog
box with three items in it:

1) DemoDTD, located in:
C:\Program Files\TRADOS\T65_FL\Samples\WinAlign\SGML\SGMLSample.ini

2) Predefined HTML Settings, located in:
C:\Program Files\TRADOS\T65_FL\TT\HTML4.ini

3)???? this is the one I have deleted and can't find. It should be
somewhere in Trados files, but I do not remember its exact
description, path and filename. It will show up if you double-click
on it.

Thank you in advance,

K.

Yes. A "security interest" is what one has in "collateral." The former
describes a certain kind of legal right; the latter describes some thing of
value as to which someone has that kind of right. I say that you can take my
computer if I don't pay you some money I owe you. The computer is now
collateral (although I keep it in my possession); what you have by virtue of my
promise is a security interest in my computer. That doesn't make the computer
into a security interest; the computer is still just collateral.

I'd look for some definitions, but I think the above should be clear enough even
without a precise defintion.

Hope it helps.
