streliva (A28) in the Czech-English glossaries at:

I have the latter on paper and find it quite good value at only
CZK 43. There is also a handy A<>CZ Jazykova Prirucka NATO available in the
shops here at CZK 286.

Can you give us any more details about the kind of translation you are doing?

Ahoj,

it's been a while since I contributed to this list but I'd like to canvas
everybody's opinion on something I'm working on. I'm writing a paper about
cohesion in Czech and in English and I was wondering what people's
experiences are with this.

One of the burning issues is repetition. My intuition as a translator is
that Czech is much less willing to repeat words (be it for emphasis or as a
tie) mostly for as an aesthetic convention. So I was wondering how often
people replace words by pronouns in Czech and if when translating into
English you ever repeat a word that was substituted by a pronoun in the
original.

Here's an example. English sentence can be translated in three different
ways. Which would you say is more acceptable? Or is there another option?

1. The man had made the boy and now the man must wither.
a. Muz stvoril chlapce a ted musi uvadnout.
b. Muz stvoril chlapce a ted muz musi uvadnout.
c. Muz stvoril chlapce a muz ted musi uvadnout.

On the other hand, Czech doesn't have all these nice substitutive words (so,
do, one,...) so it has to repeat things or circomlocute. Again, which
translation would you prefer? Or is there another question?
2. I like coffee and so does Jack.
a. Mam rad kavu a Jack ji ma taky rad.
b. Mám rad kavu stejne jako Jack.
c. Ja i Jack mame oba radi kavu.

One last question, what would be a good translation of this housewife's
complaint:
Doma se vsechno nestihne.

Any and all other suggestions and comments are welcome.

It will be a while before the work is finished but I will make the results
available on the web when it is.

I think I'll have to go shopping for dictionaries and Czech reference
literature again, looks like Prague trip is imminent since there is - as you
can imagine - a very limited range of linguistic books for Czech language in
the Uk (not mentioning the horrendous price if you can find one) :-)  Is
there any bookshop for translation resources that you or anyone else can
recommend ?

I am doing some translations and compiling glossaries regarding the SAS, and
a different ones for medieval combat & warfare, there is also a section on
medieval armour, which I know pretty well in English thought my Czech
terminology in that respect is not up-to-date, I'm afraid (e.g. words like
greaves, gorget, gauntlets, etc.)

Yup, still all the same good ol' England :-) ...just the tea is being
replaced by the Starbucks coffee and couldn't find any bears at Paddington
the other day, but otherwise nothin' is changin' (especially not the
weather) :-)

pretty good range of specialist dictionaries and glossaries.

Podle mne je jedina prijatelna moznost a) (podmet je muz, cili zamlceny
podmet je zase muz. Kdyby mel uvadnout chlapec, znela by veta: Muz stvoril
chlapce a *ten* ted musi uvadnout.).
Zajimalo by mne ale, co ta veta vubec znamena, odkud jsi ji sebral. Je to
nejaka klasika? Jako gramaticky priklad mi to totiz pripada hodne odtazite.

Propagacni vytvarnictvi je spise neco, co dela grafik, designer a vyroba
reklamy muze byt stavba billboardu, oba terminy jsou mnohem sirsi nez
signmaking, IMHO..
