The name was originally written as Comyns, and this was a noble family in early Scotland. However, since the Comyns sided against the Bruce clan when it was reclaiming the throne of Scotland, they were stripped of lands and titles when the Bruces took the throne. The clan is scattered mostly through Northern Scotland and many "Cummings" migrated to the United States.
