Celebrating the International Day Against Homophobia
& the Monthly Cuba Cultural & Film Night

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
CUBA'S STRUGGLE AGAINST HOMOPHOBIA:
Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This FRIDAY May 22
Gordon Neighbourhood House
1019 Broughton St.
(2 blocks north of Davie St.)
6:30-9:30pm

FEATURING:
(*) STRAWBERRY & CHOCOLATE (1994) – A Cuban feature length film about the
relationship between Diego a gay artist and David a member of the Cuba’s Union
of Young Communists (UJC). This movie was shown across Cuba, won many awards,
and was nominated for an academy award in 1995. The film portrayed Cuba in
transition towards a better understanding homophobic attitudes within society.
Strawberry & Chocolate opened an important dialogue across Cuba about the
importance of the Cuban revolution not excluding anyone.

(*) IN SEARCH OF A DREAM - A 15 minute documentary about the work of Cuba's
Centre for Sex Education (CENESEX) and its diversity campaign to end homophobia
in Cuba

(*) TAMARA HANSEN & AARON MERCREDI – Two organized with Vancouver Communities
in Solidarity with Cuba, who were in Cuba on May 16th 2009 when Cuba celebrated
the International Day Against Homophobia, will give their eye witness report.

For years, if not for decades, Cuba has been in the centre of controversial
disputes among the LGBT and the progressive community for its treatment and
attitude towards homosexuality. Around the world, and especially in North
America, the right of homosexuals has been an issue which has caused much
discussion, both in support of and against these important rights.

* How has Cuba treated homosexuality?
* Why does Cuba now officially celebrate International Day Against Homophobia?
* Why did Ricardo Alarcon, President of Cuba’s National Assembly, affirm the
idea that socialism and Cuba should be a society that does not exclude anyone?
* What made the Cuban government begin to look at the issue of homosexuality
differently?
* How is the LGBT community in Cuba making their voices heard on the issues of
sexual orientation and Cuba’s revolutionary development?
* How are the Cuban people responding to this change?
* What is CENESEX and what does it do in Cuba?

Please join us for this month’s Cuban cultural and film night, “Cuba’s
Struggle Against Homophobia: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow”
