this past wednesday, the st louis crochet club held its annual christmas
gift exchange. if you missed it, you really missed out! we had a great
selection of yummy snacks and even better gifts. no way i can remember what
everyone made and received, but i'll try. please FORGIVE me if i miss
something!!

dj received a beautiful bamboo scarf made by ronnie in white edged in a
purple variegated
rita received a set of stitch marker crafted by valli
dj made a lovely snowflake motif cap and scarf in white and light blue
mohair which joan 'won' and generously passed along to ME!!
georgia crocheted a bath puff and soap saver which i won
ronnie made a lovely scarf out of a lucious yarn from joan which joan 'won'
this year. what goes around...
teresa gave two knitting books, one received by georgia and one by melinda
(both knitters) (more on teresa later)
i crocheted a scarf and brought a large tote back from india to give and it
was received by valli. the tote has a tapestry of blue flowers on the front
and valli loves flowers. wit always works out, doesn't it??
gosh, i can't recall the other gifts. i know i'm missing a couple. we
missed several friends but hope to see them soon (joyce, jaclyn and others)

i did take notes for show n tell so, here's the run down - as if the gifts
weren't show n tell enough! there were several WIP's
i showed off the antique bag made by my husband's grandmother and gifted to
me last month when i visited chennai. i've had very little time to crochet
lately!
melinda showed off a petal tea cozy and her strawberry shortcake beret
dj had worked up a cute cap in hdc, blo rectangle which she sewed up and
created a deep roll brim - very cute and warm
rita had made more wristlets (oh, yeah, she made two pairs of wristlets for
the gift exchange!) and had some beautiful black/rust socks WIP
Georgia showed off a buffalo gold one skein scarf (gorgeous lacy thing), a
beret in pastel wool, a raspberry beret, a spiral rib knit cap, a lacy wavee
scarf knitted in jewel tones, and some Flat Feet Socks in knit. Flat Feet
makes this thing you buy that looks like the back of a sweater. it's spray
painted
with a design. you then frog the fabric as you work up a pair of socks.
really neat idea, but gauged for knit rather than crochet.
joan showed off some knitted socks for her grandkids. each year, she brings
out a nice selection of her sock yarn for xmas and lets each family
member choose his/her yarn. then, joan knits them a pair of socks sometime
during that year. neat idea!
ronnie is still making motifs from some skeins of handspun wool in terra
cotta and slate blue
teresa is making a snuggly (you know, that backwards robe i blogged about)
for her very tall, skinny hubby. the thing is HUGE.
valli (who has been MIA for months) finally got to show off some of her FO's
that we've seen as WIP's for months - a beautiful skirt in short rows
and lace in periwinkle wool, a turquoise/teal/off white afghan for her
grandson corwin, a lacy coral shawl, and, maybe best of all, some swatches
she worked
up with the amazing needle from information in a bendy carter book - 'knit 1
purl 2'. i blogged about that amazing needle a long time ago and valli
remembered that
i had been interested in it after taking a class in it (janet rehfeld and
nancy nehring's class) at the crochet renaissance in 2001 shortly after i
learned to crochet.

so, that's the run down. now, you know what you missed - in addition to
rita's absolutely fantastic potato chip cookies.

now, back to crochet.

Hi Julie:

I think I already replied to your e-mail but I have another idea for a small
project for the year...a Swiffer cover.  I run a small crochet group at a senior
center and we made these recently.  The ladies loved them and are now making
them for their daughters and granddaughters.  there are several patterns on the
web if you are interested.  Am looking forward to getting started in Jan.

Hi everyone, i know that this year has been a bit slow with the CALs but I am
hoping to fix that in the new year. I am wanting some input on the kind of
things you would like to make through out the year. I am thinking on the lines
of each month having 2 CALs (both small items that can be finished within a few
weeks or a month) and 1 CAL that might take a little longer to finish, like a
garment or afghan. Do you like that idea? Also, a mystery CAL sometime during
the year.

Now, I know, that not everyone likes certain patterns, but would like to be part
of a CAL, so I was thinking about suggesting that we might have a fixed pattern
for the CAL and then if you dont like it but would like to make something in
that category that you can join in and do a different pattern.

Around the end of the year, we might tailor projects for gift giving and holiday
times of gifts. I know some people dont celebrate the holiday's but they might
have a charity or even birthday presents to get ready, so we might as well focus
on gift giving for the end of the year. How do you feel about starting presents
and holiday items from September onwards?

Like I said at the beginning of this email, I would love your input in what you
would like to see happening in 2010 for CAL.

Julie

was at my local library (a huge metropolitan one) last evening. they have a
display that changes monthly. this month's was themed 'what staff does when
they're not working at the library'. of course, they're not all librarians.
but, a surprising (to me) number of them crochet and knit. other arts and
crafts were represented, but each person had a sample of his/her work.
really nice. st louis county library headquarters for those who are local.

wondering what others are hoping to receive this holiday season under the
christmas tree, for channukah, or other traditions (or december and january
birthdays)?? sometimes i feel maxed out on crochet books - but then a new
one is published and i'm entranced once again. LOL. how many patterns can
one person possibly make in a lifetime??? i certainly will get only a tiny
fraction of the patterns i own crocheted! what other goodies would you like
to receive. i need more ideas to put on my refrigerator door 'wish list'.

Hi -

I am trying to find out if anyone knows a different source for this
crocheted throw? I know that sometimes they are patterns out of books and such.
I love this throw and would love to make it for a wedding gift this coming
summer. I don't mind paying for it, but I really don't care for the yarn that
comes in the kit.

OR! Do you know of any coupon codes or free shipping codes for Mary
Maxim. If I lived near there I would take the 40% off coupon and go get it
anyway, but I don't even live in Michigan!

Any help would be appreciated!

also looks suspicious and has no title. Just thinking...

I'm sorry I don't remember who the moderator of this group is to tell before
posting this, but when I clicked on the link in this message it tried to run
malicious software on my computer. Luckily my IT hubby was home and managed to
kill it.
I apologize in advance if this is not something I should have shared but it
started an endless installation loop on my computer that I couldn't stop and I'm
trying to save the rest of us!

Sincerely,

are you in need of inspiration, need some Xmas gift ideas, want to know the
best places to buy yarn? if so, check out some of my recent blogs. i've
rounded up the best ideas and links for you there.
http://crochet.craftgossip.com

thanks to those with ideas on how to launder my 'antique' crocheted bag. I
can't wait to see it cleaned up - but still sifting thru ideas and trying to
decide which method to try.

i'm also working on a tunisian pattern in baby jacquard print yarn. i
stumbled across an interesting tunisian method that has me 'hooked' . with
the way the yarn is printed in the baby jacquard prints, it's creating an
interesting design. will try to post when it's further along.

my SIL was kind enough to bring a lap top for our family 'reunion' in
chennai, india.  so, greetings to all from india.  i'm off today to
handicraft stores to see if i can find much crochet.  i shop for this sort
of thing only in 'fair market' emporia so as to avoid sweatshop wares and to
assure a liveable wage is earned by the artists.  tomorrow, i'm meeting with
a 'crochet' friend with whom i've corresponded for some time - viji - who
resides in chennia.  looking forward to that!  will also see if pony brand
hooks - which are manufactured in india - are now being sold here.  they
weren't when i was last here.

too hot (for me) to hold crochet in my lap this morning.  and, i'm still a
bit jetlagged.  will let the family take care of me for a day or so more!!
