Charlie and I have been in the area the past couple of weeks enjoying
the mountains and fun. We hiked to Upper Catawba Falls on Monday, and
found a pair of prescription sunglasses just above the upper falls -
let us know if you've been that way recently and are missing yours.
En route to the lower falls we discovered that the rope has been
removed, making that section impassable for ordinary mortals. There
appeared to be a new path ascending straight up the side of the hill
(rather than down toward the falls), as in claw upward on your hands
and knees with nothing to hold on to not even roots or trees. We
tried it for a ways but weren't clear on the outcome, so we pretended
we made it all the way to the lower falls.
The beauty of the upper falls never ceases to amaze us; it's always a
treat to return. I've attached a couple of photos. One is of the
falls taken in 2007 during the drought, and the other is a few days
ago, post winter rains. Wet is good.
Take care and we hope to see you on Saturday at the POA meeting.
