<As for my own inactivity here I have to rack it up to not standing
behind my own paragraph anymore. I really like the idea of time being
on this infinite loop as that is the only way I can conceive a creator
to exist. But putting this concept together as a religion is going
against my atheistic mindset. I'm not happy with our concept of karma.
Tieing all this together with humanity is very difficult. As a
creation story it seems OK but why should a human being follow our
religion?>

Why should any human being follow any religion?  I can think of 3 reasons off the top of my head.  Blind faith, fear, and common sense.  Granted, most religions don't carry the common sense factor, IMO.

<I wish I could say that I've been spending a lot of time rethinking
all of this but that hasn't been the case. No matter what though I
plan on keeping this group in operation even if it takes us 10 years
to come to a final conclusion on all this. >

That's a relief.  I'd be pretty pissed if you went ahead and canceled ALL the groups.  I feel like all of you are family, however dysfunctional we may be :)

I'm looking at this project as an attempt to create the perfect religion in the sense that it A) Makes sense and B) keeps people from killing one another. It would be easy to just make up some wacky cult-like religion. I personally don't want to go that route though.

And I'm pissed.  I've been following as closely as the media will allow me the events going on in Burma.  Long story short, it led me to jot down my thoughts on my idea of our creed.  Here goes......

******************************************************************
Proposed Create~A~Religion Creed Draft

All human beings are divine.
Man is a microcosm for the universe.
Religion must conform to science and reason, otherwise it is superstition.
Educate your fellow man in the Laws of Science.
Commit yourself to learning and helping others learn true language of humanity.
Live a simple and harmonious life with nature and people.
Learn to obey before you command.
Be honest and fair in your interactions.
Love your neighbor as yourself.
What you do not wish for yourself, do not do to others.
Speaks in a non-hurtful, non-exaggurated, truthful way.
Do not oppress the weak.
Do not covet.
Have good thought, do good work, do good deeds.
Be honest, show integrity and decency.
Have oneness with the soul.
*******************************************************************

Of course, I have an explanation of why I think each one should be included, but I figured that kind of stuff should be collaborated.
So, I propose this draft, in whole or in part.  I'd love to hear if anyone had anything they want added.

Hi, Ecco.

I agree with almost everything on this list, except for the "shall not covet."  Coveting is simply human nature, and we can't wish it out of existence.  As long as coveting doesn't become stealing or dishonesty, we may as well learn to live with it.

Without going to much into all this I have provided some simply replies to each point:

Proposed Create~A~Religion Creed Draft

All human beings are divine.

Why just humans?

Man is a microcosm for the universe.

Agree.

Religion must conform to science and reason, otherwise it is superstition.

Agree

Educate your fellow man in the Laws of Science.

Agree but it seems somewhat redundant.

Commit yourself to learning and helping others learn true language of humanity.

Sounds good.

Live a simple and harmonious life with nature and people.

Sounds good.

Learn to obey before you command.

Interesting.

Be honest and fair in your interactions.

Agree.

Love your neighbor as yourself.

Agree.

What you do not wish for yourself, do not do to others.

Agree but seems redundant.

Speaks in a non-hurtful, non-exaggerated, truthful way.

See above.

Do not oppress the weak.

Agree.

Do not covet.

I suppose.

Have good thought, do good work, do good deeds.

Agree.

Be honest, show integrity and decency.

Agree.

Have oneness with the soul.

Too theological for me to answer at this point.

My (brief) thoughts:

All human beings are divine.
>> With the way we've set up the idea that everything is a part of
god, I think that this should read "everything is divine".

Man is a microcosm for the universe.
>> How about "humankind"? :)

Religion must conform to science and reason, otherwise it is superstition.
>> Definitely agree with this one.

Educate your fellow man in the Laws of Science.
>> This would be like proselytizing, right? (Just clarification for
the question of redundancy. I don't think it's redundant when viewed
as similar to proselytizing to someone.)

Commit yourself to learning and helping others learn true language of
humanity.
>> I like this one, but certainly nothing as demanding as "read your
Bible", y'know? But I guess I need to remind myself that this is a
religion we're working on, and that sort of mentality often follows.

Live a simple and harmonious life with nature and people.
>> Simple? Hmm. I dunno. This sounds like it's a bit on the "out
there" side for me. And I don't necessarily mean that in a bad way,
but it sounds like something you might here from environmentalists or
vegetarians, likely the more extreme sort. I am neither of these, nor
could I view it as something I'd endorse. Sure, I think we need to
care for the earth (e.g. don't clearcut, and replant the same number
or more trees than you take), but I don't think we, as humans, will
ever be "harmonious" with nature. And you can't always be with
people... again just how human nature is.

Learn to obey before you command.
>> Hmm. Another one (I'm working backwards here) about which I need to
think.

Be honest and fair in your interactions.
>> Sounds good.

Love your neighbor as yourself.
>> I don't agree with this one as it's said. I think it should make a
mention of respecting, not loving, and should have something to do
with respecting those whom you don't know (kind of a non-judging
thing), or those who deserve it, but not demand that everyone respect
or like people they, well, don't like, or who do not deserve respect.

What you do not wish for yourself, do not do to others.
>> This is one thing we teach our kids: If you don't like it to be
done to you, don't do it. Basically the so-called "Golden Rule". Good one.

Speaks in a non-hurtful, non-exaggurated, truthful way.
>> This somewhat contradicts itself. Sometimes you can't be
non-hurtful while being truthful; it just doesn't work. Perhaps this
can be phrased differently?

Do not oppress the weak.
>> Interesting. I need to think on this one a little. It sounds good,
but I hesitate because of possible implications or the like.

Do not covet.
>> I agree with Ron on this one. Coveting is just a part of human
nature, and I believe that without it, or some form of it, we wouldn't
have the competition that's resulted in many a good outcome or invention.

Have good thought, do good work, do good deeds.
>> I might consider phrasing this differently, perhaps "Be thoughtful,
do good deeds/work."

Be honest, show integrity and decency.
>> Sounds good, except that I think sometimes a lie can be less
harmful than the truth.

Have oneness with the soul.
>> I also agree that this is too theological.

What I did was take one line from each "main" religions' creed or commandment.  I know our point is to create our own, unique religion;  but, I think between all the worlds' religions, every topic has already been covered.

<<All human beings are divine. >>

<Why just humans?>
This is Hindu.  I agree that it should include more than just humans.  Maybe leave out the word "human".

<<Man is a microcosm for the universe. >>

<Agree.>
This is Tao.  I'm not sure if it's supposed to read "for" or "of".

<<Religion must conform to science and reason, otherwise it is superstition.>>

<Agree>
This is Baha'i.

<<Educate your fellow man in the Laws of Science.>>

<Agree but it seems somewhat redundant. >
Did you know the Atheists' had their own Commandments?  I liked a lot of them, but this one seemed most fitting to what we have already established.

<<Commit yourself to learning and helping others learn true language of humanity.>>

<Sounds good.>
This is Sikh.

<<Live a simple and harmonious life with nature and people.>>

<Sounds good.>
This is Shinto.

<<Learn to obey before you command.>>

<Interesting. >
Unitarian Universalist.  I take this as a teach or lead by example kind of thing.

<<Be honest and fair in your interactions.>>

<Agree.>
Islam

<<Love your neighbor as yourself.>>

<Agree.>
Falun Gong.

<<What you do not wish for yourself, do not do to others.>>

<Agree but seems redundant. >
Confusian

<<Speaks in a non-hurtful, non-exaggerated, truthful way.>>

<See above.>
Buddhist.

<<Do not oppress the weak.>>

<Agree.>
Jewish.

<<Do not covet.>>

<I suppose.>
Spiritist.  My thought with this one goes along with "love your neighbor" from above on the list, and "good thoughts" and "show integrity and decency" from below on the list.

<<Have good thought, do good work, do good deeds.>>

<Agree.>
Zoroastrian.

<<Be honest, show integrity and decency.>>

<Agree.>
Scientology.

<<Have oneness with the soul.>>

<Too theological for me to answer at this point.>
Jainism.  My thought for choosing this was what we've already discussed about our energy and the universe.  I think to recognize that connection is important.

People seem put off by this and yet for the origin we have agreed on it
is entirely apropriate. If we are all a peice of the creator, seeking
to reassemble itself in a "better" way, then we must be "in touch" with
that part of ourselves which is also the whole of the godmos. Of all of
the good things this creed esposes, this ties in with our creation and
our direction.

With the long silence and contemplation, I was able to piece together
what might be the first chapter of a sacred text as the things we
voted on might be understood by faithful followers. In it I also took
the liberty of naming our god and giving the first three sacred laws.
With a little creative writting help, we could further shape this
beginning to express all of the things we had discussed. Let me know
what you think and once we've shaped a whole first book, maybe we
could vote on it being our official "Sacred Text".

                              ORIGIN

On day one, the hands of Time began to move, and on this day, by
its own will, Reality came into being. Through its actions and
revelations to us, we know it to be sentient and all that exists is
made from the substance, and so is the physical manifistation, of
Reality. We also know, by its actions and revelations to us, that
Reality willed itself into being and shaped itself by perfect and
specific design according to its own plan.

And the first law of Reality was made: Whatever has a beginning
must have an end. By this law, we know that Time, which began the
moment Reality willed itself into being, will also have an end.
Reality saw that Time needed measurement and Reality needed a stage
on which to perform its purpose, so, from the substance of its being,
Reality formed the Universe and with a mighty noise, it was flung
into being. Time could now be measured by the expantion and the
eventual collapse of the Universe and this is the time Reality gave
itself to complete its purpose.

With the creation of the Universe came the second law of
Reality, The Law of Opposition: Every Thing must have an opposite.
The Universe gave us light for which there must be dark. The Universe
gave us the ingredients for life for which there must be death. Life
gave us choises for which there must be consequences. By the creation
of life and consequences, Reality has given Time meaning.

Reality knew that life needed a roadmap or caos would ensue, so
it created the third law of Reality: All life must strive to grow and
improve to survive. We know this law as evolution. As life evolved,
some species surpassed all others in its ability to survive and
control its environment. Reality rewarded this achievement with the
gift of contemplation. With this gift, Reality could now communicate
with its creation.

"Language," William S. Burroughs reminded us, "is a virus from outer space." I
propose that God is a virus that is found in the story told about him. I am God,
but will cease to be once I have imparted all the information I contain about
God. God will then be contained by all those I imparted this story to and they
will then be God until they have imparted that story to others. And so, God
passes from person to person, meaningless and yet life changing. Like the
microbe that can make you stronger or take your life away, so then are you
effected by God, even if you are not the one to catch God, because of the effect
of God one those around you who have. Thus even those who are immune to God find
their lifes changed by God. Was not the whole world changed by the Black Plague,
though the whole world did not catch it?

I've actually got two groups that I thought the premise deserved a chance that I
got made owner and after about a year or two of my being the only poster, now
sit this way (I haven't the heart to nuke em) and one I did actually open after
I joined one that was abandoned and got taken over by spammers (which I had no
contol over since the owner abandoned without giving powers to anyone else) I
left it to other (who I gave ownership powers to) and have noticed that it is
down to one who also may have abandoned it. If groups were children...

MTP was a legendary Yahoo group from back in the day.  It's where I got my start "chatting" on the internet.  The owner eventually shut it down (long, long story) and started this as kind of a substitute.  He hasn't been around for a long time.  I even went into the chat rooms (where he's been known to hang out) a couple of months ago, looking for him, but no luck.

I've been thinking of Supernuat of late. I was shocked when Bobby Jean asked me
for computer advice because he son Axnar had died (wondered why his blog hadn't
updated). This is the first year DB hasn't sent me a shocked e-mail that I
rembered to send her an e-card for her birthday. So many have just simply faded
away without a trace.

You know I thought this group had been deleted too. Only I forgot about it since
it's attached to my oldish mad.hatter2k account which for some stupid reason is
banned from chat but still active elsewhere so I switched to simply hatter2k. I
still think this is a cool concept for a group but have forgotten all about what
we agreed upon or what the rules for creating the religion were (though I
suppose I could simply read them). In fact I don't even remember why we stopped.
Did things just sort of die down?

I also sort of miss the MTP especially since the chat rooms have become more and
more of a wasteland and a good debate is hard to find. I do still hang out in
Religion:1 chat thought there was maybe a 6 month period where I rarely if ever
went into chat at all but have been hanging out there a lot lately. Again, look
for the name hatter2k. It's the only one I ever use there now. With that said I
don't miss the sometimes hundreds upon hundreds of emails that I used to get
from Yahoo Groups as it truly had become a sort of chore.

The reason I stumbled back upon this old group is because I was trying to delete
my old Blogspot (Who blog anymore?), had to access my old email account and thus
saw that there had been somewhat recent posts here. Anyhow, while at my old blog
I saw that Thal-prin herself (woman responsible for getting the MTP deleted) had
posted a comment demanding that I delete private emails that I had posted there.
Not sure how long ago she attempted to post that but since all comments had to
be moderated I just now approved it. I replied back to her too. I deleted most
of the blog but kept the part concerning her up: http://hatta2k.blogspot.com/

Anyhow, if anyone wants to contact me I recommend Facebook these days. Email me
at my new email address hatter2k@.... It's been awhile so I may not recall
some of you are. Seems weird when I think about it that I brought all these
people together by sending out random spam invites. :p

Remember that I won't see any replies to this group message because it's
attached to another account that I don't plan on accessing again anytime soon.

faded away without a trace.

long story) and started this as kind of a substitute. He hasn't been around for
a long time. I even went into the chat rooms (where he's been known to hang
out) a couple of months ago, looking for him, but no luck.
