Hi Betty, I'll definitely let you know if our plans come together. By the way.....have you seen Crazy Horse's page on Facebook? It has really grown in terms of being a social netrowking site. They post all of their photos and videos there. Also, they are active twitter users and announce blasts there and such.  The internet has changed so much since I started this yahoo group.  It's definitely worth it to check out these other websites for Crazy Horse info. But I definitely have things on the yahoo page that they don't have. I even have a facebook page I made when my baby was born earlier this year. If you search for Omar Zia you'll find me there.

Best,

oz

The Winter Edition of Progress made it to my front door today. It has one of the
most revealing articles on the mtn carving I've seen to date. Definitely worth a
read.

Apparently the next golden age on the mountain may be starting sometime soon.
While a date has not been given, it seems that following some data analysis in
early 2010, finish work on the Hand and Mane may start, provided analysis shows
that the rock is capable in these regions. Alternatively, if the rock is not
capable today, plans to reinforce the rock may take presidence.

This brings up the question about whether blocking out of the Horse's Head down
to 360 feet will go on hold while the finish work is starting. Having crews
working above other crews could pose safety risks.

I for one am going to stay acutely tuned to the going's on up there.

I wonder what will become of the Volksmarch when the Arm Carving starts....This
might have to be the year I do it!

Here is a news article which talks a bit about the recent progress on the
mountain, and in particular, some changes to the model which have been made.
There is a photo at the link showing Monique with her new
1/60 scale model which is meant to represent the direction the Mountain Carving
is heading in.

=====

CRAZY HORSE MEMORIAL — Korczak Ziolkowski has been gone for 27 years now, and on
the anniversary of his death, people bring flowers to his tomb.
They walk up the gravel path, softened by damp moss and a mosaic of fallen aspen
leaves, and shake hands with one of his sons, who stands to greet visitors on a
cold fall day at the granite mountain encasing Crazy Horse, his stallion and the
dreamer who created them.
Another year has passed since Ziolkowski died Oct. 20, 1982, at age 74.
Another year since he is said to have told his wife, "You must work on the
mountain — but go slowly so you do it right."
Another year for people to watch the progress and wonder, when will it be
finished?
"With Korczak gone, there were an awful lot of people who thought that was the
end of the project," said Ruth Ziolkowski, his widow and the chief executive
officer of the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation.
"Early on, it was such a struggle for the Korczak family to get by," Custer
Mayor Harold Stickney said. "The feeling was, locally, that it would never be
completed."
Skeptics still remain.
The New York Times published an editorial essay Sept. 1, voicing the misgivings
of some Native Americans about carving in the Black Hills and questioning the
pace of the project.
"Someday, long after you are dead, it may finally emerge," the author, Lawrence
Downes, wrote.
Since carvers revealed Crazy Horse's face in 1998, progress on the memorial
would appear slow to casual observers from the deck of the memorial's visitor
center. But, enormous amounts of rock have been blasted and bulldozed away as
carvers focus on Crazy Horse's arm and horse.
They have created a series of steps in the mountainside, leading 300 feet from
the top of the chief's head, which will allow them to work safely from the top
down.
"In the last year, it seems like they've made more progress than they have in
previous years," Stickney said.
And that progress — and the tourism it has generated — has quieted area
residents' doubts, according to Stickney.
"I think the attitude of the community is much better now than early on,"
Stickney said. "I think it's changed because of the fact that there has been
progress on it. The criticism that people had seems to have disappeared."
Expert observers within the blasting industry are impressed with the speed and
skill level with which the work is being completed, according to Jeffrey Dean,
executive director of the International Society of Explosives Engineers.
"Any time anybody asks me how long this is going to take, I say it'll probably
take less time than we think," Dean said. "The speed at which they're
accomplishing things has been increasing over time," in part because of
advancements in technology and increasing financial gifts, he said.
Asked how long he thinks it could take, Dean said: "I don't think anybody's even
able to pin that down. As long as it takes. Personally, I think they are
certainly more than halfway done."
Changing the design, keeping the vision
At the memorial, carvers are within a 20-foot buffer zone of parts of the horse,
the right side of the chief's chest and parts of his hand. That's the depth at
which they switch to more precise and delicate blasting.
As that work schedule approaches, they have contracted with experts to study the
physical structure and strength of the rock to see where it lines up — and what
doesn't — with Korczak's models, trying to answer the questions they and
visitors have long had about whether the sculptor's original models were
realistic, given the weight of the rock and the force of gravity.
"We want to have all the results of that in before we actually start to carve,"
Ruth Ziolkowski said.
The Ziolkowskis' daughter Monique, herself a sculptor, in the past year competed
a 1/60th model of the memorial that suggests several changes to what visitors
have long anticipated:
The chief's left index finger won't be pointing precariously off the edge; the
horse's mane will extend under the finger to support it
The mountain won't be carved all the way through in the areas behind the chief,
under his right arm or under the horse's leg; instead, the image will be carved
in relief.
There will be less open space than originally planned under the chief's left
arm, where the tunnel is today.
It isn't easy making changes on another artist's work, Monique Ziolkowski said,
but the changes will save time, help protect the sculpture and maintain her
father's vision.
"He wanted an Indian, riding a horse, coming out of a mountain," she said, and
that is what she has sculpted, in a way she says will work with Mother Nature.
"You hope you would do a good job and he would be pleased with it."
While blasts continue — visitors were treated to one on the anniversary of
Korczak's death — the finish work won't advance until the family and memorial
staff receive the results of the engineering studies that were recently
conducted, Ruth Ziolkowski said.
Two companies are making structural recommendations.
Golder Associates, an environmental engineering firm based in Toronto, is
studying the structure and strength of the mountain itself and mapping its
fissures and movements.
Dallas-based Real Earth Models, which scans landmarks including Mount Rushmore
and creates 3-D maps, has been mapping the memorial for years. Data from both
projects and from the models will be combined to create the most realistic
images yet of what is possible for the carving.
Ruth Ziolkowski said the project will help assure the public that the sculpture
is possible and will give the carvers the information needed to make adjustments
as needed.
She said Korczak "knew it, I know it, but the rest of the world has to know it.
This gives us the opportunity to be sure. If we have to do anything, we can."
Providing opportunities for Native education
This expensive engineering work is possible because of the thousands of small
donations — and a handful of big donations — people have made in recent years
toward the progress at Crazy Horse.
In late 2007, Sioux Falls philanthropist T. Denny Sanford donated $5 million to
the memorial, to be paid $1 million a year for five years as matching donations
were raised. That gift is intended specifically to further work on the horse's
head.
He later donated $2.5 million for the construction of a new college residence
hall and classroom building, to be operated as a satellite of the University of
South Dakota. Sanford broke ground on that project in a Caterpillar in
September, and construction will start in earnest in December.
And Paul and Donna "Muffy" Christen of Huron in July announced they are donating
$5 million in two installments to a special endowment that will support the
operation and program costs for the university.
The university program will open in 2010 with about 10 students and will expand
in 2011, Ziolkowski said. It's a college prep program open to high school
graduates and people with a General Educational Development certification, with
priority given to Native students from South Dakota.
It will be fully funded by the Crazy Horse Foundation, with no state money used,
said Laurie Becvar, dean of the USD graduate school division of continuing and
distance education.
Students will study math, English and American Indian Studies, Becvar said, and
will receive credit for a American Indian Studies internship by working at Crazy
Horse.
Ziolkowski said the internship will provide the students with an income and
provide the monument with much-needed seasonal workers.
Education, Becvar said, "continues to be the great equalizer."
Rather than being a distraction from work on the carving, the university was
part of the plan all along, and at last, the resources are in place to work on
it, Ziolkowski said.
"You have to do the mountain first because that's what brings the publicity,"
she said.
It was always a goal to make the mountain more than an attraction, to be a place
where Native American students can learn, she said. Along the way, the
foundation has given $1.2 million in scholarships, mostly to Native students
within South Dakota, according to memorial staff.
Korczak "said if you have pride in yourself and then an education, you can do
anything you want in this world," Ruth Ziolkowski said.
No speculation on when carving will be finished
Despite the progress, Ziolkowski won't estimate when the carving will be
finished or speculate about who will be around to see it.
"None of us knows how long we're going to live, and none of us knows how long
it's going to take," she said. "Put those two together, and all you can do is
hope."
But at 83, she knows she won't live to see it finished.
"If there were a way to go any faster, we'd do it for sure," she said. "Nobody
wants to see the progress up there any more than I do."
Thanks to Sanford's donation, though, lack of money is no longer slowing
progress on the carving, and there is a chance Ziolkowski will see another major
section unveiled.
"I'll settle for the horse's head," she said.
That's the part Korczak wanted to carve first, before Crazy Horse's face,
because, he would say, there are four world-famous carved faces not far away.
But after he died, Ruth went in a different direction — the first time she went
against his wishes, she said. The chief's face made more sense than the horse's,
since it's at the top of the mountain, she said, and the work is best done from
top to bottom.
It was the first of many decisions she has had to make without him, trying to
approach the future in a way that honors Korczak's dream, tells Crazy Horse's
story, but is still practical and possible within the limits of time, funding
and the mountain.
"Korczak said, `I cannot carve Crazy Horse from the grave.'"
Neither can Ruth.
She said that, although the family doesn't have big meetings to discuss future
plans, she often visits individually or in small groups with the seven of her 10
children who work at the memorial about progress in their different areas of
responsibility. The seven are involved in diverse roles, including carving,
sculpting, maintenance, the museum and the administrative office. (The other
three children all live within a few miles of the monument.)
Son Cas Ziolkowski, the mountain foreman, is perhaps the person in a position to
be most sensitive to the pressure to show progress on the project.
"There's always going to be those people that think we're not doing anything,"
he said. "I think they have no imagination. I think they don't believe these
kinds of things can be."
As much imagination as the work requires, it takes that much more hard work.
"Bottom line: You still have to get out there with a drill and do it," said Cas,
the duct tape patches on his Carhartts and the deep lines in his face a
testament to how many days he has spent working in sun and the wind.
He said he has as many people as he can working on the sculpture on the days
when it is safe to do so — usually six people a day, all but about a week or two
of winter's harshest weather.
At 55, he doesn't know if he'll live to see the finished project, but he said it
doesn't matter.
"If every Ziolkowski died today, this will get done," he said.
It's the visitors, donors, supporters, workers and board of directors who have
built the memorial, Cas said.
"Those people, they're not going to let it go."

I just downloaded and explored Google Earth for the first time in ages. They
have a cool 3-d rendering of the mountain carving if you turn on "3-D
Buildings". While the elevation data is a bit disconnected from the map, it is
still a great virtual tour you can take if you have never yourself been there
and seen the backside.

It's a great way to waste time! Pretty addictive.

Though, the "3-D model" is a couple of years out of date you will no doubt
recognize!~

It's been an interesting year on the mountain. Blasts have gotten much larger in size with most coming in around 2000+ tons. Many of them are announced on twitter which links to the Memorial webcam so you can see the action. In addition, the design and location of the blasts are posted on flickr. There has been another $10M donated this year. Half from Donna Muffy Christen and then matched by T. Denny Sanford. The money will be used to construct the first dormitory on the Crazy Horse campus.

Work has also resumed on the far right side of the mountain, which Korczak worked on in the 1970s.

Back when I started this list, it was difficult to find photos of progress on the Mountain. You may remember the yahoo group's photo section. Now, almost daily, new photos of the mountain are posted to Flickr.com.

Progress!

Furthermore, engineering work has gone on this summer to start mapping out the structure of the rock in the mountain: Presumably to locate all of the joints and fractures in the rock and determine scientifically how the mountain will be stablized and held together during the carving of the Horse's head. If you look carefully at the mountain, you'll notice Thunderhead Mountain is NOT a solid contiguous piece or rock. It is several large locks abutted together at rather weak joints. If water penetrates these joints and freezes it will push apart the mountain. Likewise, if an overhang, like the nose of Crazy Horse or the whole horse's head, is carved and unsupported by some means, gravity and the sheer weight of the rock will pull the joints apart, resulting in a rockslide destroying the carving. The same could happen to Crazy Horse's outstretched arm. These are serious engineering challenges! Luckily the physics is simple, but the engineering involved in supporting what will be a ~1 million ton sculpture is not.

Can you guys believe the decade is going by so fast????
The carving is already completely down to the muckpile at 300 feet below the top of Crazy Horse's Head. So in a sense they are now working "at ground level", but the ground has risen!

Well, that's all for now. enjoy the rest of your summer. Down in TX, it's hot and dry as our 2 year drought goes on....

Cheers,

oz

From the official site....

May 25th blast to exceed 3000 tons
A full weekend of activities May 23-25 are planned at Crazy Horse Memorial to
kick-off the summer season. An enormous blast on the massive mountain carving
will join the slate of activities at the Memorial. The blast, weather
permitting, is planned for 11 am on Monday, May 25. The shot is part of the
ongoing blocking out of the gigantic 219-foot-tall horse's head. The blast will
remove in excess of 3000 tons of rock. It will take place on the 300 bench,
which represents work being done 300 feet below the top of Crazy Horse's head.

BTW....
With such an excellent Web2.0 presence, it seems redundant to post news here.

Per CHMF on Twitter, if all goes as planned, there will be a 1500 ton blast on
the mountain, this coming Monday. It will be the blast to open the new "300
bench". During the last 2+ weeks it has been drilled from above and from the
muckpile below. Not sure if the blast and video will be announced on twitter
like the last one was, but if you're off from work like I will be (new baby!)
then check it out.

This is the first frontside bench not requiring blasting a temporary ramp to
open. The muck pile has now risen to the elevation of the lowest bench, so
dozers can reach the bench foot from in front of the mountain now, and
apparently the pile is stable enough to drill from. In that sense, this is a
historical blast on the mountain!

Last fall, a drill was working largely out of site on the large area
to the right of the carving that Korczak had blasted down to in the
70s and early eightees. I am calling this the "315 bench" as that's
the approximate elevation of that area measured in feet below the
top of the carving. Yesterday it appeared again out there. Given
that this can only be spotted with the new webcam

which only gets updated a handful of times a day, it's impossible to
know what's happening out there. But apparently, it's working on
an "as time allows" project to remove the right side of the
mountain. I guess that means:"weekend project" now. I'm told the
right side of the mountain will eventually be removed down to level
360 in two large steps (315 to 338 to 360) in parallel with the rest
of the horse's head being blocked out.
My guess is that this side of the mountain will see some of the
largest blasts in the history of the carving as, being further from
finished grade, vibrations may not harm the carving as much.

It's a shame that this work is largely out of view of the primary
webcam, as such work can not be closely followed. One hopes that the
permanent webcam, to be placed at an oblique angle to the carving
will be up and running soon, and will capture images frequently
enough to capture these large blasts. Who knows what bandwidth will
allow!

This will be some of the most interesting work on the mountain until
finish work starts as it should dramatically change the profile of
the mountain in a way which hasn't been seen since the 1970s.

In other news, I think the 300 bench is in the process of being
opened. Drills and Bulldozers seem to be prepping for a first
frontside blast down to that level now. Keep an eye on the webcam to
see what's happening this week!

The official website now has an outstanding page with up-to-date
photos of the mountain from their new high-rez webcam.

You can see the mountain as it changes during the course of the day,
every day.

Resolution is 1024 x 768, and though not quite the quality of a
digital photo, it is still a nice upgrade over the older
webcam (640x480)

It's been a long time since I've surfaced! There is some news to
share. The Mountain's new website is up and running. They have updated
the "Carving A Mountain" page.

http://www.crazyhor sememorial. org/monument/ inside.html

Of particular note is that Monique is working up a new 1/60 scale
model of the Mountain which will more represent the final product and
be used to guide the final work. It's nice to see that the torch has
been passed.

I believe that Korczak's models, while they represent his vision, do
not accurately represent what can actually be carved given the
geometry of the mountain and nature of weak faultlines within the rock.

It will be interesting to see Monique's Model when finished.

Happy New Year folks!

It seems to be working for me Betty...try this link.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CrazyHorseMemorial/app/peoplemap/view/map

A guy on another group of mine said he couldn't see it either. Someone
else, said that his flash player needed updating......not sure how to
do that, maybe someone else does.

Harry, I can't see anything on the page but a square where the map is
supposed to be I think and some numbers that when clicked on produce
nothing.

Grouplets and it's on the homepage of the group or you can follow this
link.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CrazyHorseMemorial/app/peoplemap/view/map

One of the biggest blasts in the carving's history was shot this
past week. 3200 tons of rock were removed to expand the 280 bench
this week. Work on the 280 is expecting to wrap up soon with a
possibility of the opening on the 300 bench in the next few weeks.

300, 320, 340 and 360 benches will need to be completed before the
mountain is sufficiently roughed out to begin detail work on the
Horse's head.

I am personally projecting 2015 as the year finish work starts on
the Horse's head. Note that I have no affiliation with the
Mountain :-)

There's a lot of rock to the right and below the horse's head that
Korazak left before he died in 1982. That region has some slope to
it, but you could call it about equivalent to 315 in elevation. It
is expected to be taken down to 360 in two large steps as a separate
project on the mountain which will happen in parallel to the general
blocking out of the horse's head and as time allows. So that is
exciting work to look forward to in the next few years which is a
bit different than what we have been seeing.

What's behind that fin of rock is a bit of mystery to me...it may be
blast muck or it may just be endless mountain (ie, not a fin at
all). It's really hard to tell from aerial photos. So when it's
blasted away, who's to know how the profile against the sky will
change.

Hopefully, the new Webcam will reveal all! Apparently the mountain
crew is in the critical path to get that set up by sinking a steel
pipe into the rock on which the camera is meant to stand.

Well, that's all for now. Hope you are all doing well...Sorry
updates haven't been coming more often, but there really hasn't been
much news that you can't just read on the official mountain website.
