Passing of Dan Bailey, Class of 1936
Dan was the father of Don, class of '63, John, Montour class of '65, and the
husband of Evelyn Petrie Bailey, Crafton Class of '40.
Our father, Dan Bailey, passed away on April 15th at his home in Snellville.
Born on December 25th, 1918 in Bradford Ohio, he was the son of Roy and Grace
Bailey. His father was a telegrapher for the Pennsylvania Railroad, his
grandfather was a blacksmith for the same railroad and his mother was a full
time homemaker who died when Dad was 11. Dad was one of six siblings, with two
older sisters, one older brother, and two younger brothers.
Dad attended Ingram Elementary School and Crafton High School, graduating in
January 1936. Immediately after graduating, he began work as a secretary in the
engineering department of U.S. Steel Corporation. Dad met our mother through a
youth group at the Ingram Presbyterian Church and they were married in 1941.
They celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary last March.
They raised two sons, Don of Cumming, Georgia and John who lives in Abingdon,
Virginia. Dad had four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
In 1947, he was awarded a full tuition scholarship to Carnegie Institute of
Technology and immediately began night school classes. Eleven years later he
graduated with a b.s. degree in Mechanical Engineering which he obtained while
working full time and helping raise two sons. He was laid off in 1954 from the
Construction Engineering Division of U.S. Steel when the Fairless Works was
completed, and worked for two years for the Lewis Machinery Division of
Blaw-Knox, He then accepted a position designing pressure vessels for J.P.
Devine Manufacturing Company a small family company who occupied one of the
buildings where Porter Locomotives had been built. This was one of his favorite
employers with a small engineering division and close knit staff where he
eventually became Assistant Chief Engineer. In 1969 he became involved in
nuclear engineering when he went to work for NUMEC in Apollo, Pa. In 1971 he
moved to Chillicothe, Ohio and worked for Goodyear Atomic Corporation until his
retirement in 1984. He and mother moved to Georgia shortly after his retirement.
Dad served as an elder in two of the Presbyterian Churches they attended and was
a trustee in another. He served on the school building authority while living in
Ingram during the building of the David E. Williams Junior High School and was
active on the church board during the construction of the First United
Presbyterian Church of Ingram.
Dad enjoyed his retirement, mastering his home computer and keeping track of his
investments. He enjoyed gardening and working in the yard. Dad had two ear
operations and never got his hearing back, but with the help of his hearing
aids, he enjoyed life until 2003 when he was diagnosed with congestive heart
failure, but with the help of his doctor and Mom he continued to keep busy. Dad
thrived in the comfort of friends, family and faith through cards, letters, and
Mom keeping him informed about what was going on. Dad was the last surviving
member of his family.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Westminster
