GRIFFIN
THOMAS G., JR.
Passed away peacefully on the morning of February 28th, 2006. Tom and his
always present wife Clare Helen (Holveck) Griffin were longtime residents of the
Pittsburgh, PA area and later Seabrook Island, SC.
Since September 2003 they have resided at Heron Point in Chestertown, MD. The
cornerstone of Tom's life was set on October 6, 1945 in Upper Montclair, New
Jersey when he and Clare were married. They met at St Philip's Grade School and
graduated from Crafton High School in 1939.
For over 60 years of marriage, the team of Tom and Clare presented a picture of
grace, poise and sturdy family values. Forged with humor, love and dialogue they
created the team of Tom and Clare. Tom started working at Union Electric Steel
Corporation in Carnegie, PA, after high school graduation. He joined the United
States Navy in 1942 and was selected for the Navy's V-12 program, which provided
Tom the opportunity to begin his studies in metallurgical engineering. After
World War II he completed his degree at the University of Pittsburgh '47. His
44 years in the steel industry were almost exclusively at Union Electric. He
retired from Union Electric in 1983 as Vice President of Production.
Tom and Clare's eldest son, Thomas, of Annapolis, MD, passed away in February
2005. His wife Joanne Bachelor Griffin and children, Rachel and Tommy were a
presence during Tom's final days. Tom's younger brother Patrick preceded him in
death. Patrick's wife Frances and sons Patrick, Michael and Dan are long time
residents of the Pittsburgh area. Tom is survived by his loving, supportive and
strong wife Clare; children Bill (partner, Barbara Hollister) of Dune Acres, IN;
Susan (husband, Byron Sandford) of Washington, DC; Jeanne (husband, Don
Ebenritter) of Belfair, WA; and John (wife, Jane Detmer Griffin, and daughters
Lindsay and Lauren) of Wallingford, PA.
All the family was present during Tom's final hours. In lieu of flowers the
family request donations be made to the Heron Point Benevolent Fund,
Chestertown, MD 21620 or The Alzheimer's Association, 850 York Road, Suite D,
Timonium, Maryland 21093.
Time and place of service is to be determined at a later date.
