If any of you have ever been to a military funeral in
which taps was played; this brings out a new meaning of it.
Here is something Every American should know. Until I read
this, I didn't know, but I checked it out and it's true:
We in the United States have all heard the
haunting song, 'Taps.' It's the song that gives us the lump in our
throats and usually tears in our eyes
But, do you know the story behind the song? If not, I
think you will be interested to find out about its humble beginnings.
Reportedly, it all began in 1862 during the Civil War,
when Union Army Captain Robert Ellicombe was with his men near
Harrison's Landing in Virginia . The Confederate
Army was on the other side of the narrow strip of land.
During the night, Captain Ellicombe heard the moans of a
soldier who lay severely wounded on the field. Not knowing if it
was a Union or Confederate soldier, the Captain decided to
risk his life and bring the stricken man back for medical attention. Crawling
on his stomach through the gunfire, the Captain reached the stricken
soldier and began pulling him toward his encampment.
When the Captain finally reached his own lines, he
discovered it was actually a Confederate soldier, but the soldier was
dead.
The Captain lit a lantern and suddenly caught his breath
and went numb with shock. In the dim light, he saw the face of
the soldier. It was his own son. The boy had been studying music in the
South when the war broke out. Without telling his father, the boy
enlisted in the Confederate Army.
The following morning, heartbroken, the father asked
permission of his superiors to give his son a full military burial,
despite his enemy status. His request was only partially granted.
The Captain had asked if he could have a group of Army band
members play a funeral dirge for his son at the funeral.
The request was turned down since the soldier was a
Confederate.
But, out of respect for the father, they did say they
could give him only one musician.
The Captain chose a bugler. He asked the bugler to
play a series of musical notes he had found on a piece of paper in the
pocket of the dead youth's uniform.
This wish was granted.
The haunting melody, we now know as 'Taps' used at military
funerals was born.
The words are:
Day is done.
Gone the sun.
From the lakes
From the hills.
From the sky.
All is well.
Safely rest.
God is nigh.
Fading light.
Dims the sight.
And a star.
Gems the sky.
Gleaming bright.
From afar.
Drawing nigh.
Falls the night.
Thanks and praise.
For our days.
Neath the sun
Neath the stars.
Neath the sky
As we go.
This we know.
God is nigh
I too have felt the chills while listening to 'Taps' but I
have never seen all the words to the song until now. I didn't
even know there was more than one verse . I also never knew the
story behind the song and I didn't know if you had either so I thought
I'd pass it along.
I now have an even deeper respect for the song than I did
before.

Why were the current crop of officials in such a big hurry to sink every one of
the Spruance class as fast as they could? Other than the Kidd's is there a
survivor of the class? I've heard that Spruance was supposed to be saved, but I
heard it was sunk also.
Why were none of them scrapped like so many other classes?
Compared to the original build I have a picture of her before she became fish
food. I have a few questions for the later shipmates:
What is the dome over the stbd side windtunnel
What is that dome next to the stack for MER1 on a little platform?
What is that funny looking thing mounted on the stbd fantail? Launcher of some
kind? Sure hope there was a turret lockout to prevent MT 52 from shooting it.
Was TASS ever mounted on her?
Hi again ALL: Your are right about about the historians. They used to call them
"technical advisers: to ensure that had thier "poop" together. In the movie
"THIRTEEN DAYS" with Kevin Costner, about the Cuban Missle Crises It Shows USS
Sylvania ASF2. I am a plank owner in that ship commisioned on July 12, 1964 in
Long Beach, Ca. Almost 24 months after the fact. I served in
USS Okanogan APA 220 from Oct '61 to Sep 63 & participated in that "Expedition"
transporting recon. units from Pendelton, Ca. through the Panama Canal to GITMO
& then to Vieques Island (PR).
We returned to Long Beach just in time for Christmas. Of course you won't see
the "OKIE" in that one. Another example is the COB on the American "BOAT" was
wearing scrabbled eggs on his Ball cab.
Terrible thing when all You is CRITIQUE when we get old & decrepit. One thing I
noticed in ALL of the POST/NAVAL TIME SAILORS wheather retarded or otherwise
even if your only did four, We are All
Local Boys DONE GOOD. I have a real good MARINE neighbor to whom I referred
only once as an EX-MARINE & He promtly stated that once a MARINE always a Marine
I guess we're ALL SAILORS. May You continue to Prosper with E-Nine in the
Heavens GOOD COUNSEL & GUIDANCE. (Pardon the semblance of
irreverce none intended).

Chief Pineda...I remember you and coincidentally I grew up not far from Converse and went to a brand new Samuel Clemens High in Shertz. My dad was stationed at Randolf AFB for 10 years. I was there from 64-75.
Congrats on the degree...I can relate to the dedication it takes at that age to do it. After the Navy I finally grew up; then I sought higher a education, getting my degree from Auburn at the age of 35. Unlike a lot of the guys in the service at that time...the Navy was for me just a stepping stone from poverty/homelessness to a better way of life. I just wanted to do my time and get out. I was young and pretty stupid, and I regret some of the things I did or didn't do, but I wouldn't trade the memories for anything.

I don't do much E-mailing but the Ltgj Bender I remember that He had family in San Antonio. I live in Converse,tx. When Frank Struse passed away I visited briefly with Retired Master Chief Simpson, Carl Braun, Ron West & someone mentioned that LCDR Bachlund had passed away But do not know for sure. I learned a lot from both LCDR Bachlund % Ltjg Bender. I get embarrassed now when I think about the list of books I had read & showed it to someone in the Logroom. Mr. Bachlund later "invited" me to his stateroom where in the limited space He had copies of most of the books written by Peter Druker the "Management Guro". Needless To say I ate my humble pie. After retiring I earned an undergraduate degree From "Sweet Sue" Southwest Texas State Univ. in 1981 at the Young age of 44, now nearing my 72nd yr (Sept 26) I regret not having gone further in studying; However I fill most of my "free" time reading any good book I can get. This
summer we took the AMTRAC to St. Louis & I managed to get through UNCLE TOM'S CABIN, How I regret not reading it sooner. Take Care -- Cipriano and Ruth

Carl & All Shipmates who remember the Brown Cheif: I hope Your Son is getting on
well & safe in his deployment. I Too, take trips down memory lane often, I
remember the late equipment checks we did & the CS "Tool Inventories" Plus
getting all the B&B 55 gal drums below. I also remember all the good times, The
times that Frank Struse stopped by when passing He thought of all of the
Plankowners, not only the Snipes, He particularly mentioned Blyly, Pattenau,
Yeaman, Navarro,
Master Cheif Wells, All the CPO's in the GOAT LOCKER . Keep in touch & take
care.

I don't do much E-mailing but the Ltgj Bender I remember that He had family in
San Antonio. I live in Converse,tx. When Frank Struse passed away I visited
briefly with Retired Master Chief Simpson,
Carl Braun, Ron West & someone mentioned that LCDR Bachlund had passed away But
do not know for sure. I learned a lot from both LCDR Bachlund % Ltjg Bender. I
get embarrassed now when I think about the list of books I had read & showed it
to someone in the Logroom. Mr. Bachlund later "invited" me to his stateroom
where in the limited space He had copies of most of the books written by Peter
Druker the "Management Guro". Needless To say I ate my humble pie. After
retiring
I earned an undergraduate degree From "Sweet Sue" Southwest Texas State Univ. in
1981 at the Young
age of 44, now nearing my 72nd yr (Sept 26) I regret not having gone further in
studying; However
I fill most of my "free" time reading any good book I can get. This summer we
took the AMTRAC to
St. Louis & I managed to get through UNCLE TOM'S CABIN, How I regret not reading
it sooner.
Take Care

On February 16, 1979 Commander Donald L. Gurke transferred responsibility and accountability for Elliot and her crew to Commander Stephen S. Clarey. This was right before the maiden deployment (WESTPAC) which began on February 21.
Elliot was flagship for Destroyer Squadron 31 commanded by Captain John Poindexter.
Along with Elliot were other ships in Carrier Battle Group (TG 37.9): USS Ranger, USS Buchanan, USS Brooke, USS Downes, USS Camden and USS Mauna Kea. Embarked onboard were airdales for HSL 33 Detachment 1, with LCDR Michael Coumatos as officer-in-charge.

I remember Budzitowski. I may have been the original Ski, however there was another ski who worked in A gang by the name of Yankosky. I am not so sure of me being a quiet one. I also recall the change of command ceremony when Gurke left and the new Captain ( can't recall his name) took over. Thanks.

Right you are Mike! I believe Budzitowski inherited "Ski" after you left. I guess you were kind of a quiet one. Some of our rowdier characters include Pete, Huey, Mulder - and the likes! Ok guys, looks like we forgot a old shipmate too soon. Let's give him a hearty bear hug!! :-)

I did not think we were going to make it to Clark AFB alive! How about the trip on that school bus through all the mountain roads. The one thing I will never forget is when that drunken kid stood up and started pissing right in the terminal. Do you remember that? You and I looked at each other and shared the same reaction......I'm short and ain't getting involved. LOL They did not forget my NEF medal on my 214. It qualified me for membership in the VFW.

Ski,
I departed Elliot the same time as you after reporting aboard in 76 in San Diego before commisioning and I'm doing good...remember the trip to Clark and the volcano? I was the redhead always fishing...the deck apes loved me...and I got big paid back big time at the equater crossing...gee Shultz....it was just a little shaving cream in the rack...lol
I bet they can't beat ya with fire hoses like that anymore. Man I was black and blue. The kinder gentler Navy is here now.
I attached a couple of pics. One is out of my commisioning book of FOX Div. where I was before the the switch to G Div.
I took some great pics of the Minsk and like you was on board for all the hot boring part of that cruise but missing the fun parts over the last month or so. I have to wonder why, like everyone else, I was handed a Expeditionary Medal for all the fun in the Indian Ocean but it was left off my 214...guess I pissed off a 0 cause I declined to extend my enlistment to finish the cruise. Oh well...it don't matter!
Franklin

I was the redhead always fishing...the deck apes loved me...and I got big paid back big time at the equater crossing...gee Shultz...it was just a little shaving cream in the rack...lol

It is certainly good to hear from you. You are correct. I am from Pennsylvania and worked in both MERS with you and Pete. Also worked in the oil lab with West as well. I remember all those days spent in Long Beach and preparing for the LOE and OPPE. The names you mention (Pitkins,Bauer,Navarro,West) were great shipmates. I left the Navy in 79 and pursued my education under the GI bill.

It is always good to hear from old ship mates from the Elliot. I
was a Plank owner and remembering the good times we had together. Being in
engineering, (EMO1) forward engine room was a pleasure. Was transferred off the
Elliot in April 78 prior to making her first Westpac. Reading the emails you
must have had a good time.
I remember when Mike Klopotoski reported aboard the Elliot and
as I recall he was in aft engine room and was from Pennsylvania. Am I correct?
Also Chief Searcy, then 3rd class as I recall. We met
again at the decommissioning of the great ship Elliot. What a sad day but great
memories seeing the guys again.
Bob Yeaman, he too was a plankowner. How are you doing, well I
hope. I have read several email that you have written on the Elliot web site.
Ronald West, he too is a person that I will always remember. I
think he is one of the most caring individual I have ever met. A true friend.
Laurie Bauer, I have ran across him a few times since I was transferred
off the Elliot. We do pass emails back and forth on occasions.
CP, what a guy, a man with the write words at the right time. He
is another one that we have spoke over the phone as well as visited. The last
time was in San Diego when our great friend Frank Struse passed away. Hope you
are doing well.
Several other shipmates that we all keep in touch is Dan Navarro,
Steve Peters (Pete), Dave Pitkin’s, we had a great crew. Someone
mentioned in their email about Gurke’s Turkeys. In engineering it was “WEE

It was and is great to hear from all of you.

Ahoy mates! WESTPAC 79! I was just going through many of the pictures that I took! One of my favorite ports was the short time we spent at Noumea, New Caledonea. I also liked Western Samoa. Fantastic beaches and beautiful water.
My favorite memory: the full moons shown to the Russian cruiser! A groundbreaking gesture for detente!

Well Mike, those of us saying "We don't remember you" are obviously those who were on ELLIOT on her maiden WESTPAC voyage. Perth was on the schedule but was pulled. I was a YN on there and remember most names from the original crew. Your's isn't one of them. Could it be you want to ask something about that trip even though you weren't on the ELLIOT then??

I remember you. You were assigned to the Log Room as the YN. I could tell you that LCDR Bachlund was the EO when I came aboard. I was assigned to MERS 1 and 2. The reason why I am not in the cruise book is because I left the ship while she was in Subic Bay, PI before the cruise was completed. This was in August of 79 and I seperated from the Navy in Sept. 79. I was known as SKI and remember Carl "Spud" Braun, Cheif Bauer, Cheif Pineda, etc. Proof enough?

Bitching and moaning, Gurke's Turkeys.....man...those were the days and of
course I wasn't even 21 back then. As one of the Ship Office's YN's Gurke
intimidated the hell out of me every time I'd bring papers to his cabin. He
would always, say, "Searcy, are you bringing me more propaganda.?" Somehow I
knew he was just pulling my chain.
After leaving the ship in early '80, I didn't see ELLIOT again until she called
port in Yokosua, Japan (1992). I was the Admin Chief for 7th Fleet (onbd BLUE
RIDGE) when I heard, "ELLIOT, Arriving"! Imagine how long it took me to breakout
for the Quarterdeck to meet the Captain and escorted him to the Admiral. Big
deal for me!
Upon decommissioning (Dec '03), the ELLIOT was about as appealing as a polished
diamond on the outside. We had a nice complement of original crewmembers at the
ceremony and photos roam about. I know Bearhaven has a nice group of them. :-)

was all dressed in blue sweaters and ballcaps..never more proud of her..

> Saw Capt Gurke on the FOX when they were along side for refueling..I was the
conning officer and I mentioned to my Capt that he had one crew that called
ourselves Gurke's Turkeys..he knew the Capt and just shook his head..also saw
CWO2 or 3 Dill on a CG during an UNREP as he was on the bridge learning Conning
procedures..called over on the ship to ship SPP and it was good to hear from
him..never say the ELLIOT again after the 1984 alongside..no longer had a
breakaway song..and all I saw were ghosts on it as she pulled away for the last
time..
