All,
Please review the two items below for our County Council meeting this coming Sunday, July 12. (At the same place and time, 6:45 pm, at the Niebyl-Proctor Library, 6501 Telegraph, Oakland. Although of course we're also having a "field trip" to the Oakland Museum at 1:00 pm on Sunday!).
Thank you!,
Greg Jan
1. Endorsement of Jeremy Cloward for Ellen Tauscher's old U.S. Congress seat.
Jeremy contacted us three weeks ago by e--mail, where he introduced himself, gave us a brief overview of his campaign and a link to his website, and asked if we would be interested in endorsing him. We then contracted the Contra Costa Greens (since the majority of the district is in Contra Costa county), and then waited until they had checked on his past registration status, and other related items. Together, we decided that we really needed to interview him, in order to obtain enough info in order to make an "informed decision" regarding endorsing him. Council members were encouraged to review his website, come up with questions to ask him, and to participate in the interview.
It took us awhile to coordinate schedules with everyone, and then to contact Cloward to actually set up the interview, which finally took place yesterday evening (Thursday, July 9). However, several Contra Costa Greens who initially were interested in participating were in the end not able to make it, so it turned out that Contra Costa's only representative at the interview was their County Council member Paul Seger. Alameda County was represented by myself (Greg Jan), and by Michael Rubin.
At this point, in the interests of saving time and space, I won't explain details of the interview here (but Michael and I will go over highlights of the interview, and answer questions, at Sunday's Council meeting). Suffice it to say that all three of us who interviewed Cloward recommend endorsement, and that the interview basically confirmed what's already posted on his website: http://www.jeremycloward.com/ . Therefore, PLEASE BE SURE TO REVIEW CLOWARD'S WEBSITE ( http://www.jeremycloward.com/ ) before our meeting this Sunday!
2. Endorsement of Fundraising event in San Francisco for "Reverend Billy" (Billy Talen), the Green Party candidate for Mayor of New York City
Please see the announcement below regarding details about the fundraiser. You will likely recognize many of the members of the Host Committee -- Reverend Billy apparently has a strong following, and a reasonably-organized campaign -- so it should be a good event! (As you might suspect, the campaign asked us to help publicize the event, and in order for us to do so on our Announcements listserve, we must first endorse the event).
***PLEASE FORWARD***
Rev. Billy Talen, the Green Party candidate for Mayor of NYC, is coming to town on 7/21. http://www.voterevbilly.org

Who is Rev. Billy Talen? Bill Talen, also known as Reverend Billy, is the Green Party candidate for Mayor of New York City. Talen lived and worked as a performance artist in the Bay area for twenty years. Moving to NYC in the early 90s, he started up the Life After Shopping Church, with a 40 voice choir. Casting himself as the anti-consumerist televangelists, his comic "retail interventions" got him outlawed from all the Starbucks in California. In NYC, the church membership grew after 9/11, as citizens looked for a kind of fellowship independent from organized religion. Now Talen’s mayoral campaign is leading the rise of the 500 neighborhoods.
