VICE PRESIDENT CHENEY PARTICIPATES IN CANNED HUNT
On Tuesday (12/9), the New York Times ran a strong Op-Ed against canned hunts,
reminding readers that New York Governor George Pataki had vetoed popular
legislation that would have banned canned hunts of exotic mammals in his state
(for more info, go to www.PitilessPataki.com). That same day, Vice President
Dick Cheney went to a private hunt club in Pennsylvania to shoot pen-reared
pheasants and ducks released just for him and his hunting party to slaughter.
Vice President Cheney and his small hunting party shot 417 pheasants and an
untold number of ducks - with Cheney himself shooting more than 70 pheasants
(see http://www.thepittsburghchannel.com/news/2690219/detail.html). In response,
The HSUS' Wayne Pacelle stated, "It wasn't a hunt. It was an open-air abattoir."
-----------------
According to the Humane Society's own estimates 3 to 4 million pets a year are
euthanized.
How is this any different than shooting a penned pheasant?
I would like to hope that in the case of Vice President Cheney, the animals did
not go to waste. I know a lot of hunters donate food to homeless shelters and
food banks.
What happens to the several million cats and dogs MURDERED by the Humane Society
of the United States each year?
Also so-called canned hunts are not always set up just like this one. By
definition a canned hunt is one run by an organization in a fenced in area. Many
of these so-called canned hunts are held on hundreds of acres of land. Many of
the areas that I hunt are surrounded by natural barriers and much smaller in
area than these hunts and I don't always see deer.
Even if the animal is pushed out in front of the shooter, cows, chickens, and
farm bred fish are slaughtered by a third party where the end user can keep
their hands blood free. At least Mr. Cheney is up front and honest about being a
carnivore.
Too many people forget that fish, poulty, and beef are not born on styrofoam
wrapped in plastic!
