SKILLS TO OVERCOME PROBLEMS IN MARRIAGE...
Part 3 - "Close The Back Door"
"'For I hate divorce,' says the Lord, the God of Israel."
Malachi 2:16a (NAS)
We've been discussing skills that need to be developed in order to
have a successful law enforcement marriage. Today's skill is one of
the most important!
Above all else, ladies, you must immediately and permanently
determine that divorce is NOT a back door in your marriage! CLOSE
THAT DOOR! Your marriage must be something from which there is no way
out! Never entertain the mentality that "I can divorce him if it
doesn't work out!"
There are several ways to close the door to divorce. First, make a
commitment with your husband that the word divorce won't even be
allowed in your vocabulary. Under no circumstance will either of you
even mention walking out, leaving, separating or divorce!
Second, when you have an arguement or disagreement, don't develop the
habit of stomping out of the room/house or leaving the conversation
out of anger. That is reinforcing the habit of leaving and it breeds
divorce. Commit to staying until you have progress, or set an agreed
upon time within a short period in which you will come together to
discuss the issue.
Third, whenever you feel anger welling up inside of you, still tell
your spouse "I love you". Reinforce the love. You can still love him
when you are angry, and that is the time he especially needs to know
that. Don't leave him wondering or doubting your love. There are
plenty of badge bunnies out there who are all too willing to 'spread
the love'. Let him be secure in YOUR love.
Choose TODAY that divorce will never be an option. Close that door
for good!
PRAYER: Father, I ask that you would speak to the hearts of these
couples the wisdom of not even entertaining thoughts of divorce. Help
them to permanently close that door, never to open it! In Jesus'
name, amen.
